Rank the top 10 coyote states

This has probably been done before but I cannot remember seeing it. Anyway, if you had to rank the top 10 states as far as coyote hunting is concerned, how would rank them?

I guess some things to take into consideration are: population of coyotes, access to hunting grounds, hunter-friendly regs etc., etc.

So, how would you rank them from 1 to 10? One being the best.

Sounds like a controversy waiting to happen, but I'll get my licks in early. The western/desert states top my list because they have open country mixed with cover, an abundance of public land, high dog population, and generally less spooky behavior on call-ins. I also think it's important to have juuuust the right amount of civilization - yotes are found near human activity - so the perfect places are where wide open huntable country is right next to civilization.

Nevada - reasons above, plus no license needed, and it's cheap to travel to Vegas
Arizona
California
New Mexico
Montana
Wyoming
Texas
Utah
Idaho
Washington

I would say from all I have heard on here.
1.Nevada
2.Texas
3.Idaho
4.Arizona
5.Montana

I think any of the western states are good. But this is my idea of how they rank in numbers of yotes

Nevada keeps being high on the list, but all I ever hear from Lance is whining about no coyotes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's a north VS south thing .

If you have access to pvt land or your welling to pay some already rich rancher, Texas is by far the best state for predator hunting.

Many of the western states have very good predator populations, to rank them in order is next to impossible.

The states I like to hunt the best would be Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico, only because I've hunted them all real hard and know where to go.

Other then that it's all a toss up.

This one is easy! Sonora, Mexico. They do not think there are any borders. I used to coyote hunt in Mexico below Sonoita, Mexico in the 60's. Unbelievable!

For today: Not Utah
Nevada
New mexico
Oregon
California
Wyoming
Idaho
Alberta (whoops wrong country)
W. Nevada
E. Nevada
N. Nevada

If I couldnt hunt California and Nevada, I would head to northern AZ, or southern Utah, and then New Mexico. Oregon and eastern Washington would rank up there, as well as Idaho and Montana. Something tells me Nebraska grows some big old dogs out in that tough, cold rangeland.

Billy, Shame on you!!

NO THANKS!!!!!! We dont need our predator population hunted much like our deer population. Money is the biggest common denominator when it comes to hunting big game in Texas, all the while leaving the little guy out. predator hunting is gaining popularity and this practice seems to be gaining popularity as well, as much as I hate it.

If you hire a guide, or put in the hard work to secure your own access I have no problem. When you start paying money for "access" to predator hunt an area you are putting predator hunting in a higher monetary bracket above what "most" of us can afford. I dont see the benefit to paying for predator hunting when most ranchers will pay you "if" you do a good job. It makes me sick to my stomach when I hear of such things happening these days. Its all leading to and end that none of us will benefit from. I have never paid a penny for access, and dont plan on doing so. I have had money literally thrown at me while I drove off, after refusing to accept it. I wouldnt have it any other way!!!

Take care,

Todd

Todd, I'm afraid there have already been too many tracks laid down the slippery slope of commercialism. Anybody want to place any bets on how long it will be before a common thread on boards like this will be along the lines of "well, I headed out to the coyote lease this weekend".
I fear that it will go the way of big game hunting.

Inevitable, I suppose, but that don't mean that we have to like it....

I agree with Todd! The only price I have ever paid to hunt yotes is I have to kill all of there groundhogs. Which is a price I will gladly pay. I have never been turned down when asking permission to hunt yotes. In fact I have been told many times by the landowner to kill everyone of them and be sure I don't miss. I have permission for more land then I can hunt in one season simply by asking and being respectfull to the landowners wishes and land. I lived in NC for 4 years and it was almost impossible to hunt anywhere without having to pay a large lease fee. Needless to say I didn't hunt much there. The practice of paying to hunt was started by rich greedy guy's who don't want to share. This does not include game preserves. Man I could on and on with this subject but I will get off my soapbox.

Todd, why shame on me? calicokid, I've also hunted Sonora and Baja Mexico where 20+ coyote days are common place.
I'd have to say it's over all better predator hunting then Texas, but it ain't in the U.S.

Yellowhammer and crapshoot,
I was refering to Northern Nevada have never hunted southern. But I know plenty of people who hunt ranches of Northern Nevada that will shoot 20-30 coyotes on a 2 day trip. Northern Nevada has a lot of big ranches that hold on to a large number of coyotes. I have been told it is because there is plenty of water and food in the ranch areas of the desert.

I can't believe too many of you guys missed the NUMBER ONE area!!! I know it's not a state but per capitia and area, you'll never find more predators then Washington D.C. !!! But as I think of that, the coyote is way up the ladder from them politicians.

No coyotes at all in Utah, no one should consider hunting them here at all, I will try my best to monitor the population and keep everyone informed as to when it would be okay for others to hunt here again LOL !
