First off, Texas is horrible for coyote hunting.....don't let anybody tell you differently. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Second, I agree with Todd....I would never, and I mean NEVER pay to hunt predators on private property. It should be the other way around and in fact it is that way on several ranches I hunt considering that I receive checks from them periodically to cover my expenses, etc. Those guys that pay me are the ones that can literally be put out of business by predators alone so they see the benefit of predator control and realize they need the predators killed. I'm no championship predator caller or incredible shooter by a long shot (believe me, there are people on here that will attest to that /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif), but I do go along with what the rancher wants me to do and I respect both the rancher and their land. The bottom line is to do good work, don't do anything stupid and keep the rancher informed as to how you are doing.
I'll hang up my calls and predator rifle and take up another outdoor sport before I pay a dime to a rancher so he can take my money to the bank while also making more money off of a bigger lamb crop, deer herd, etc. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif Heck, I've got enough costs to cover like gasoline, ammo, tires, etc. to be paying extra for the right to hunt someone's property. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif It's all about business, and if you roll over and pay the rancher for the right to hunt then you're getting "taken" in my book. I'll let somebody else pay (usually an unexperienced predator hunter)which will likely result in the rancher having a bunch of educated coyotes running around and killing his sheep, etc.
I saw a classified ad in a publication here in Texas where a predator hunter was offering to pay ranchers for access to their property. I can tell you right now if that guy was a good predator caller/killer, he wouldn't need to advertise and he definitely wouldn't need to pay. But I have a strong assumption that he isn't good and he is probably doing more harm than good when it comes to the predation on livestock and wildlife. He has the right to pay money if he wants, but the ranchers that make a living off of sheep, deer hunting, etc. will realize that the money made off of the predator hunter just isn't worth it in the long run.
Just my $0.02, but I'll argue all day and night about it when it comes to predator hunting in Texas.
Take care and God Bless,
Rusty
