I get your point about not knowing your drop if you don't know your velocity, but can't you simply set up targets at different distances and shoot at all them holding dead on and that will give you the answer?

Yes. Started loading right at 60 years ago and didn't get a chronograph until probably in the late 1980's; don't know how I got along without it so long!
