I am running low on varget, and it is getting pretty hard to find. So I am trying to find a good substitute powder for my 243 win. Thanks for any recommendations.

Just got 243 and working on h380 now.Meters great , got a long ways to go to and not sure about it . Using sierra 70 HPBT match so far.

46 to 47 grains of IMR-4350 with WLR primers for the 70NBT's (seated long) out of a 243win.
46.5 is where I ended up, although I shot all the way up to something like 47.2.
This is a hot load though so work up slowly in your gun.
At 46.5 seated .005 off in Lapua brass, I'm running 70's now at 3,385fps out of my Tikka T3 Lite.

I also had real good luck first with a full case of Reloder 19 and the 70NBT (seated short).
Speed was down around 3,250 though. I still use this formula for another buddy however.
I can give you specifics on this one also at any time. Just know that you can make them work and work well with either one of these two powders.

How is imr 4350 and 4064 for temp sensitivity?

sbranden, what is your oal on the 4350 load? Right now I am running them at 2.730, which .020 off the lands.

I had decent luck with 70 gr Nosler Varmageddon and H380 last year.
44.0 gr/3432 fps avg.
45.0 gr/3507 avg.
46.0 gr/3627 avg
These shot under 1.5" in a Savage 99C with a crappy Simmons scope off bags.

The same bullets shot similar with W760 last week but no chrono that day.

I like 39gr of IMR 4064,it shoots well in several rifles. Yep haven't seen Varget in a long while and went to IMR4064 as it is very close to Varget on burn rate and available.

I have been using WW 760 for years, now called H 414, runs thru the powered measure like silk compared to 4064/4350,similar velocity to either, less preasure.1 MOA at 100yds, out of a Ruger 77 with ultra light 20" Barrel, with the 70gr Varageddons, I running 46.5gr .015 off the lands......runs just under 3500fps out of the short barrel, Good luck.

If you can, try and get some Hodgdons H4350. I've had good luck with it, in my 243 with heavier bullets. It's very similar to the IMR4350, but supposedly not sensitive to temp.

That h414 might be just the ticket. I am running a 20" Brux barrel on my 243. I did find 3 lbs of 4064 in my stash, might try that also.

One word of caution on the H-380 powder usage. It is temperature sensitive. I had a scary adventure with this, where a 22-250 load was developed at 50-60 degrees, and then shot at 85 degrees, which resulted in a very stiff bolt lift. I pulled all of my H-380 loads after that. In the interest of full disclosure, this load was near a published max. charge weight. Not over, but near the max.

I warned a fellow shooter, that goes with a bunch of guys, P-dog shooting. He came back with a very similar story on a P-dog shoot, where a fellow shooter, using H-380 loads, had to pound his bolt open! There are too many other good powder choices out there, that are not as temperature sensitive as H-380. If one is well below max., then maybe H-380 would be OK, but I contend the temperature sensitivity will change POI, at a minimum, and probably open groups up, even if the pressure doesn't increase to dangerous levels. YMMV

If there is one time where Superformance powder works its the 70-80 grain bullets in 243.

50 grains of superformance and the 70NBT is under half inch in my model 10 predator at 3750fps in a 24 inch barrel.

You guys won't believe it, but I found an 8# keg of varget. I stopped in a little mom & pop store back in Sept. I asked the guy if he had any varget, and he told me he has had some on order for a while, but hasn't received any. He took my name and number, and told me he would call if he got any in. Honestly, I completely forgot about it. Well, he just happened to call today and said he got some in. Hallelujah!!

I've had decent results with 87-90 grain bullets. 48.5 grains for 3250fps out of a 20" barrel. Your 70 grain load sounds like a smoker!
