Hi gang, Im new to the forum as of today and just wanted to say hello to everyone and to see who all may be from the Great State of Alabama? I have just gotten into coyote/predator calling as of a few months ago and I have to say that I am hooked . I called in my first coyote back in December down in West Alabama and I only had my hand made into a fist to blow into to make a high pitched squealing sound and within 3 minutes I had a black yote that had come from over 200 yards away come to check out what the sound was. I didnt have my gun with me as I was up in a tree stand just looking around but the yote came within 60 yards of my location and sorta just squatted down on all 4s to figure out what was going on. He stayed for about 40 seconds and he never saw me and figured something just wasnt right and then retreated the way he came in. After that I was determined to hunt those critters. I have a Les Johnson Ruffie dog Jr open reed call and I practice with it everyday, even driving to and from work . I also have a Johnny Stewart PM4 digital remote caller with several different sound cards such as the dying cottontail, baby cottontail, coyote pup distress, and several others that should fill the bill. I also have several crow sound cards for it. 3 weeks ago I was able to call in 2 yotes early one Saturday morning just North of Birmingham but I wasnt able to get a shot on them. One of them had spotted me before I spotted him out about 100 yards in some tall sage brush so I got busted that day, but I was thrilled that I was able to call in something just the same, so that was worth the trip right there! Im going on a dedicated predator hunt the whole weekend of the 22nd down at a hunting club in W. Alabama and Im pulling the trigger on something!! LOL It will be a two man team of hunters and me and my hunting buddy have been practicing every chance we can get before the 22nd of this month. Wish us some luck!! I will have my Ruger .270 bolt action as well as a 12 ga with #1 buck loaded in it. My hunting buddy is a member of this club and I am going as his guest, but should you ever need a coyote partner, please give me a shout. Let me hear from you , where you're located, where you hunt, how you do your calling, etc.... Thanks!! Oh yeah, I forgot to say,....ROLL TIDE!!!! John

I am from Silas Alabama about 1 1/2 hour drive south of Forkland. We have some coyotes but the woods are harder hunting (thick)compared to the Forkland area. I have a friend that lives about four miles from Forkland. I do hunt in that area several times a year. The coyotes seam to be larger in that general area than in my home area. When hunting I like a cross wind and a cloudy day. I use hand calls and a Foxpro Fury. My rife of choice is a AR-15. What do you think about the hay art on the side of Hwy 43 near Forkland? I enjoy looking at the hay art to see if new art is added from trip to trip. I don't know about the setting up of the e-mail.

I'm in Hamilton Alabama and hunt just about everything when time permits. I use a FoxPro Firestorm caller that works great. I'd like to sell it and get a more sophistcated caller I've called in a bobcat coyote and crows so far and can really get into it when weather is not soo hot!

Hi Les and fw !! Thanks for your replies. So does up there in Hamilton have lots of yotes? I would imagine so, it seems they are nearly everywhere now, its just strangley odd and funny how they seems to disappear when I want to go hunting for them, LOL FW, so did the bama yote do any damage to your truck when it tried to carjack you at gunpoint? I hope not anyway. RED , how are you doing these days? Seeing any signs down there around your place? I havent been out hunting since last month when I went to the coyote hunt down in Forkland. All I ended up killing all weekend was 2 dang crows!! Out of 17 hunters fow that weekend, not one soul saw or called in a coyote all weekend!! The bad weather and lots of rain may have had something to do with that though. John

John I suppose coyotes around Hamilton are like everywhere else. U have most luck where you can hear them at. Looks to me like hunting in the open places out west and up north is easier. I been busy not getting to do much hunt'n lately. Do you guys know of anyone that would like to buy a FoxPro Firestorm (as new condition) with 147 sounds? I put it in classifieds but it got deleted cause I had not posted enough since I just started on PM. Anybody ever used the FoxPro mixed sounds? They appear to be a good idea to try but I don't know. Let me hear from everybody Les

Hi John,
I live in North Alabama around the Florence area. I've been coyote hunting for about 8 years now. When I started out hunting I used a couple of different hand calls but for the past year and a half I use a Foxpro Fury. I shoot an AR-15 most of the time when I hunt but also use a shotgun every now and again. Welcome to the forum. If you ever have any questions send me a message. Be glad to help. Good luck and good hunting!

Ha yote perisher U finding coyotes around big fields or in thickets somewhere? Do you hunt around the Florence Lauderdale county area? Reason I ask is I graduated from UNA in 1991 and worked while I was in college as a furniture delivery person for Mangum Furniture. I am pretty familiar with the Lauderdale area. I love the TN river fishing below Wilson dam!

Hey Les,
Yeah, we mostly try and call them out of the woods into open fields. Hunt mostly the eastern half of Lauderdale Co. I'm also a UNA grad (2007). You hunt the Florence area much?

I dont get to hunt much of anywhere but Marion and Lamar Countys. I lease land in Marion where I live and work and my family has land in Lamar where I'm from. I was wondering if you had to hunt the thickets like most of my Lamar County land is? I have more pastures in Marion County so that makes it a little easier. In my time riding in the furniture truck I got to see much of Lauderdale Co and as I remember there were lots of fields in east Lauderdale. I have an as new FoxPro Firestorm I need to sale if you know anyone interested. I need to get $330 plus shipping or I can meet someone half way between here and there. I have bought a Fury 2 that has not come in yet.

No I don't hunt the thickets much. There are a couple of places where we hunt close cover but prefer to be in open fields calling them out of the woods and creek bottoms.
Yeah there are quite a few open pasture areas around east Lauderdale Co. Just always trying to gain access to new areas.
Good luck with selling the Firestorm. You will love the Fury. It's a great e-caller. Pick up either a Jack Attack decoy or the newer Fox Jack. They are both great decoys to use with the Fury.

Glad to see some Bama folks on here. I'm pretty close to Mr. Carr. I'm barely in Fayette County just north of the Tuscaloosa county line. I've had pretty good luck so far this year, 3 coyotes and a bobcat since Jan. 1st. All mine have been on log road intersections in thick 7 year old cutover. I haven't called since Turkey season has come in but had one come to my box call. I took him with a load of 5 shot at about 20 yds. all my others were with a rifle. I'm new to this forum stuff but would enjoy sharing and getting any help from ya'll. ROLL TIDE!

Jim, thanks for the reminder about the pm. I reckon it slipped by me or something. I will pm you my contact numbers and email addy if you care to chat anytime . DRT, that is just NO FAIR!! You have bagged 3 yotes and 1 cat and here I am left just holding an empty bag and have yet to pull the trigger on one, LOL I have deer hunted up toward Berry a long long time ago and used to go to Wolf Creek wildlife management area many moons ago to deer hunt. Way to go my man!! Sure sounds like you have it figured out how to do it. If ever you teach yote classes at your location, please count me in!! I have a Johnny Stewart wireless caller with lots of soundcards as well as a couple of hand held open reed callers, a semi auto shotgun and my Ruger .270,... have ammo- will travel!! Just holler at me please. Im happy to see all the Bama folks on here replying. Thanks to everyone and lets keep it going. There seems to be lots of knowledge on here from all the guys and I think its great that we can share our tricks and what works and what doesnt work with each other. Ok, what are you yote heads seeing once mid-spring and the warming days of summer arrive? Do you change your tactics for that time of year? Thanks everybody!! John.........(who has called some in but yet to bag one

Mr. McGowan, I only wish I had it figured out. I get crapped on more than I get to shoot but I truly love to try them. Any success I have is strictly the luck of the Irish. We really just have a lot of coyotes and there are not many around here calling. Mr. Carr, Good luck in getting back out there. I'm sure good things are coming, they'll be young and uneducated pups to hunt before long.
Best of luck, DRT

Checking in from way down in the right corner lol. Waiting for turkey season to wind down then I will be out in force thinning out the population a bit. Weve been out scouting and sign is everywhere. So I am pretty pumped. I am the only member in my club that hunts yotes so I have the whole place to myself. I'll check-in with results when I can. Ya'll take care.

I'm late to the party, new to the board, but wanted to chime in...I've grown up hunting most everything Alabama has to offer, but haven't focused on predators until recently. I'm excited about the new challenge.
I'm making the move from B'ham to Huntsville/Decatur...I work odd hours, but if anyone gets room for one, or can point me in the right direction, give me a shout. Happy hunting.

Made a few stands out over the weekend didn't see anything but did have a woodpecker going all kinds of crazy in a pine across the fire road from where we were setup. I imagine we did call one in but couldn't get it to cross into the open
Lots of similar stands made off fire road junctions/intersections with no visible luck. We set up overlooking some clear cuts with a gentle cross breeze this am but again no luck.
Sign was everywhere, tracks, scat, adult and pup. Evening vocalizations were tremendous and the am was active too. I tried cottontail distress, pup distress, and some bird distress. I tossed some various howls in as all towards the end of the stand.
All in all great time was has and a perfect weekend to spend with my 11 yr old in the woods calling up some fun.

Wide open, welcome to the forum! Str8,...Sounds as you are certainly in the right spot if you are seeing all this kind of sign on the ground. The best thing in my opinion is that you got to spend some great quality time togther with your 11 yo son. There's Nothing better than that in my book!!! I have not been out at all since February, its been one thing after the other . Dont count me out though, I still want to get after them before it gets waaay too hot . Check this out!!!!
I was going to Brookwood Mall today to get my hair cut. I live right off of GreenSprings Hwy on Berry Road if any of yall know where this is. Anyhoo, I left the house at 1:15p for my 1:30 appt and about 500 yards from my driveway on Berry I saw what I thought was a dog go across Berry Road. Keep in mind all this is residental area. As I get closer to where this animal crossed the road I look to the left and there is Mr Wiley Coyote standing in somebody's driveway looking right back at me!! I pull of to the left side of the road to watch him, he stays around for about 5 seconds and he hits some woods that separates two properties. He was a very pretty grey color and I'd estimate him to be a good 25 lbs. Im feeling sorry for the folks that lets their pets roam free. Not 100 yards from where I saw the coyote I see a big white kittycat walking down the road. Im willing to bet that it wont be long before I hear of "my pet has disapaeared, has anyone seen it? " John

I had seen something similar but where I live I'm more in the country than city although we are inside the city limits. I was driving down the road at about 230 in the afternoon and sitting on the side of the road was a big ole coyote. This was across from a neighborhood.
We live in a subdivision and we regularly hear howling behind our house. Of course we border the county and nothing but woods, fields, and a few creeks and ponds behind us.
What I need is to get off my butt and buy the tax stamp...

Hey guys! I'm from West Alabama and I just started coyote hunting last year. Ive been having some trouble calling them up this summer. I know they are with their pups right now. But when is the best time to call for coyotes in Alabama? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!

Hey guys! I'm from West Alabama and I just started coyote hunting last year. Ive been having some trouble calling them up this summer. I know they are with their pups right now. But when is the best time to call for coyotes in Alabama? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!! Hi AYH, welcome aboard! Im be no means an expert, but I look at yote hunting like going bass fishing, anytime I can go is a good time . Im not trying to be a smart arse, but Ive been on a few outings and didnt call up anything that we know of, but I take this outings as a chance to gain some experience and try to learn something new each time I go out. Basically, the more you have a chance to go, the better your chance of seeing something or better yet, dropping the hammer on one, know what I mean? As a buddy or mine puts it, you aint gonna kill nothing by sitting on the couch. Where in W Al are you located at AYH? John

Thanks! I try to go as much as I can! I'm slowly learning! I've called in a couple of bobcats and one coyote. I'm just having a little trouble this year! Hopefully when fall rolls around I'll have some luck! I'm located in Jefferson on the Tombigbee.

I'd say that you are not neccesarily doing anything wrong, just dont get discouraged if you go on a couple of stands and dont see or call up anything and keep after them doggies :),.. been there done that. What sounds are you using to bring them in? You may want to change up the sounds some here and there so as not to educate the yotes that may be seeing you but you dont see them. Give them a little varity of different sounds and loudness. If you've already called in some bobcats and a yote, you are already ahead of the game. Just remember that nothing is guaranteed each time we go out. Im not sure where Jefferson is but when my dad was still living , we would go down to the Tombigbee hunting club located on Hwy 11 in Boligee each Saturday and deer hunt. That was some years 40+ ago when I was a young lad. You have you some prime real estate down there for some critters( Im jealous!!,LOL ) , keep at it and I know you will get to drop the hammer on one soon. John

I've been using a Johnny Stewart electronic call. I've used a cottontail distress, rodent distress, and bark/howls. I think I might try a fawn distress since they are starting to be born. I'll also start with the sound low and work my way up. I don't want to spook anything.
We are pretty lucky at my land! We have big deer, tons of hogs, turkeys, lots of varmits, and a lot of predators!! It's a hunter's dream!

Hey guys,
New to PM and just getting into predator hunting. Glad to see so many in Alabama on here. I just started predator hunting at the end of deer season and looking for any advice or tips to help be more successful. I've got a flextone echo ecaller and a few mouth calls but still practicing with those. I'm shooting a Savage model 10 .243 and an AR.
I've managed to get permission to hunt several nice pieces of private property that vary in size and I know each have been known to have a fair amount of coyote activity. I've only been out a handful of times since I started before I decided to stop to let them rest during pup season. I did manage to call in a nice black coyote on my first trip to about 175 yards and rushed my shot and missed him. After that trip I was absolutely hooked.
I live in Leeds and hunt all over St. Clair County. Anyone else live or hunt close to me? If anyone is interested in meeting up for a hunt please let me know. I'm sure I could learn a lot from some of you more experienced hunters. I haven't run into anyone in my area that really targets predators and seem to have plenty all to myself around here. Any advice or tips such as what sounds you guys like or which sounds seem to work during certain times of the year or any other advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm working on getting permission for a few more pieces of property and plan to get back after em around dove season.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum KiYi. Yes Sir, I'd be interested in going with you on a hunt if you wouldnt mind. I have a Johnny Stewart E-caller, a Mojo critter as well as a couple mouth calls for distess and howls and have been out several times and called some in but have not dropped the hammer on one yet. I have sent you a pm with my contact info too. Thanks, John

BAM!!! I did it,... I got my very first kill Sunday down in Greene County!! A 30 pound female. I also dropped the hammer on another one Sunday that was larger, Im guessing he was a big male but we couldnt find him but I know for a fact I hit him, he was spinning round and round biting himself in the hindquarters then he ran off into some very thick cover after I shot him. We had already came across one cottonmouth so I didnt want to venture too far into the very thick swamp cover to go after him.It would have been a long ride out of the woods to the hospital to treat a snake bite, know what Im saying?
Can anyone help me/tell me with how to post pics?
Sunday was about 200% humidity and it didnt seem to affect the yotes any . I called in a total of 4 dogs Sunday, killed the female first at around 8:00am after calling for about 15 minutes , shot at one of two orange looking young dogs that were traveling together about 3:00pm, then hit the big one that ran off around 3:30 pm. I am SOOOO PUMPED I cant stand it!!! LOL I have killed my first yote !! John

Mr. McGowan, I know how it is. Hard to get everybody lined up at the same time. None of my regular hunting buddies want to go because of the heat. I think they're right, I've been a couple evenings this week with no luck. Just about burned up. Gonna try Saturday morning for a couple hours. Looking forward to cool weather. DRT

Hey fellas,
I haven't been hunting recently but have been doing a good bit of scouting and acquiring new land permission. One good thing about being a night shift police officer is I've been able to ride the boundaries of some of the places I have permission to hunt and I'm pleased with what I've seen. They love to move at night and I've seen several good looking yotes and several smaller ones. Probably this years pups. During the day I get out and occasionally walk some of the properties and have seen lots of sign. I've also noticed a lot of fox activity. Even managed to see a few red fox. And I've heard that if you have fox you have coyotes. Couple of other places I got permission have several rocky outcrops and the landowners reported seeing a few bobcats so I'm really looking forward to getting after em soon.
I haven't forgot about you John. Just been real busy. Definitely have to get together soon.
Good luck guys, Happy hunting.

Welcome aboard the 'Bama thread David!! Tell us how you get it done up there in Oxford?...Its always nice to know there are folks trying to hunt the hunter. Have you seen a good number of yotes in your area? How do you go about hunting them and what do you use to call with and shoot them with? Fill us in when you can. Thanks, John

I'm still really bad at the predator hunting. Killed a couple while deer hunting and only called in two (shot one). Having issues with decent hunting land. Plenty of sign that they are in the area, but I can't see more than 50 yards so it is tough getting them.
I use a foxpro and a few custom calls that I've gotten from Rudy here on the board. Both of the called in yotes were with hand calls. I'm ready to get back in the woods and mix some things up.

I don't want open fields, just places without so much terrain and brush. I would like to think that I'm calling them in but they are busting me before I can see them. And maybe if I can see a bit further I would at least know they are there. The other possibility is that I am not calling in anything where I know there are coyotes and cats.

Hey Jimbo,
Welcome aboard. What dept. you work for?
I've really been lucky as far as getting places to hunt. My dad is a retired game warden so I've used a lot of the connections he made over the years to get places to hunt. Plus it seems so many people hate coyotes so usually just the mention of them is all it takes. Other places I really just stumbled upon and got lucky. But I've managed to get several and I'm pretty excited to get after em this year.

I popped one Sunday down in Pickens County around 4:00PM. Had called in several others and this is the first time ever that I've had them answer me back by howling and barking at me. We were in a platform stand about 10 ft from the edge of a green field and I had my mojo critter and caller upwind of me and out in the field about 80 ft. The real weird thing is that they started howling and barking at my yote pup in distress call. Anyone got any comments on why that would be or have ever had this happen to you?
When I hit the pup distress, it was almost to me as if they were all being challenged and several different groups came alive in the woods all around the field. I could tell the one barking to my right kept getting closer and closer, so he ended up trotting nearly right under where I was in the stand and once I actually saw him I followed him in my scope . He stopped directly in front of me at 35 steps once he saw the mojo twitching out in the field. Now that was pretty cool! He was just about to go barreling out to the mojo when I let him have it with my rem model 7400 243 that I had just bought used a few days earlier and had sighted in the day before. I'd say thats a good way to break that gun in huh? LOL Anyhoo...he was a young this year's male that weighed less than 20 lbs and was pure ugly looking.
I have an invite to go up to Winston Co this Saturday to do some yote calling/hunting so cross your fingers for me that we will see something. Later,... John

I've been calling and nothing going on. Then I switch to pup distress and have a pack fire up. Pup distress has a way of really pissing them off. I've heard a few people say that the noisier packs don't come in as much. Congrats.

We moved to 4 different locations during the day that we could see scat on the roads and still saw or heard NOTHING all day . Thats the way it goes sometime I guess...but I'll keep after them

Nite nite little boy..!! I called this one in about two weeks ago down in Pickens County. Gave him a single dose of a 100 gr boolit out of a used Rem Model 7400 243 cal that I had bought just a week earlier and put a scope on it the day before. A good way to break a new to me rifle in I'd say I got him to come within 35 steps of where I was sitting in a platform stand and I then lowered the boom on his behind. He never knew I was there as he was checking out my Mojo Critter thinking that the Mojo was his late afternoon snack, LOL

Glad to see you're having some luck. I was ale to call in a double last week, but only got one of them. The other one left in a hurry before I could get on him. Also got a bobcat Sunday while calling with a friend. I was calling and watching the off side when he came slipping in at about 50 yds. Keep up the good work and help me pull for JWM (new member to forums). He is the most unlucky critter hunter I've EVER saw, but we'll keep on till we get him one. I caught the female in the pasture around 3:30 in the afternoon. I used a 17HMR to do the trick. I keep the 17HMR with me all the time just for instances like that. where I live, we have a lot of pastures and cows and coyotes seem to like the new born calves very well. we have a lot of problem varmints and I always keep a gun close. The 17 is small but carries a big punch. The coyote ran about 100 yards and fell over, never getting out of the pasture. I like to hunt with a 22-250 and since its getting hunting season, Ill probably switch over to it until deer season rolls in.

ge] Hey guys, Well I managed to get out early this morning and do some calling with Whitey21. I've managed to call in a few over the last couple weeks but for various reasons I haven't put anything down. Whitey got a new AR he wanted to break in so we were both itching. So we set up in the edge of a cow pasture I have hunted a few times before and it was still not quite shooting light yet. There was pretty much no wind and we put the caller about 40 yards out in front of where I sat. Luckily Whitey brought his FoxPro so I was hands free today! LOL. I let out a couple lone howls on my diaphragm call then Whitey went into some rabbit distess shortly after on the FoxPro. Within about six or seven minutes of being on stand two coyotes appeared from my right out of the woodline and trotted steadily up to with about twenty feet of the caller. The first coyote seemed a little skittish so I let out a short burst of pup distress on the diaphragm and that froze them in place and they looked hard toward the source of the sound. After my recent misses I didn't waste anytime and let the closest one have a 55 grain VMAX. She jumped about three feet in the air and spun one time and flop! Her partner ran off but came back for just a couple seconds with some Ki-yi's then decided he had seen enough and fled for good. Once it was over and me and Whitey were recapping the stand he informed me he could not see either coyote from his position due to the grass being a little high and some scattered trees blocking his view. We were both pretty excited. Turned out to be a female down. Guessing she was about 25-30 pounds. Long story short she was my first coyote called in AND KILLED so I was pumped and am still pretty wound up about it! I already had the fever but now it's even worse. I was getting a little discouraged with all the empty stands and the ones I did call getting away but now I feel like things may be coming together a little bit. And thanks to you Whitey for being with me this morning. Happy hunting guys and keep the stories coming.

You sound like me after I put my first one down earlier this year,...I had previously called in several but wasnt able to drop the hammer on one until July. WAY TO GO brotherman!!! I have learned that if you have a good shot you had better take it when and as soon as you can because they wont hang around very long. Now then,,....you and Whitey need to call me and lets get after some. CONGRATS Kiyi!!

Thanks John,
We should make some plans to all get together and make some stands. I'm still fired. Got a week off work in a couple weeks and hope to get plenty of stands in then.

Got this girl today. I went out with Bryan, but the wind was blowing so we went to call crows after a few stands. I saw her in the field before we got started. I missed a couple of long shots and had to sneak up on her. I got within 40 yards and shot her just above the eyes.

Congrats David!!! Thats a good looking dog there and I see that she is thickening up her fur for the cooler weather. I like that 'DUH' look in her eyes too!! LOL Good job brother.
I went out last Friday to Shelby County but like you the wind got up to 20 mph about 9am and then switched directions 180° so we didnt see anything. And we also called in some crows too after the wind got up. What time did you pop this one David?

LOL David!! Thx for the Bday wishes, but you know how us tide fans are Went down for a Friday hunt and we overlooked some greenfields as well as clearcuts with some hilly terrain....made 5 or 6 different stands but saw nothing all day!! We could see signs of some scat in the roads but couldnt even get one to howl back or show themselves. I was able to call in some flocks of crows with the cottontail sounds though, thats about the only kind of critters we saw. The wind did get up at times but I just dont know if that had anything to do with it all. But it wasnt because I didnt try to call them up. Thats just the way it goes sometimes I reckon. Looks like I need to get Whitey21 to take me out and show me how to do it...<hint,hint>

Hi from Mobile. Relocated here 4 months ago, not place to hunt yet. There are 3 WMA's here. I'll prolly take a day next weekend to run over & check one of them out. I'm thinking the one with a range, so I can where & what it is.

What's going on boys.... Im in southeast Bama. Geneva county not far from Dothan or Fort rucker. Right on the FL line. We're loaded down with yotes, bobcats, and foxes.i usually dont really get after them til after deer and duck season. But thats probably going to change here right off, saw 2 big yotes chasing a calf and its mama in a big pasture .25 miles from the house. By the time i got home and got the .204 they had it dead and gone. This was at 2:30 in the afternoon. Bet you i dont leave home without the rifle anymore. If they were closer they would have had some .45 acp flyin at em lol.

Hi everyone, new to the forum. I am from Mississippi, just outside of Mobile Al and would like to learn more about coyote hunting in the area. I was looking at some of the wireless electronic calls but dont know where to go exactly. Just looking to get my feet wet and not spend TOO much, but dont want to buy junk either. Anyhow any thoughts or tips on techniques or needed equipment for a beginner just looking to try it out would be great!
Thanks, Chad

Chad,
Personally man you cant go wrong with a foxpro caller. You can usually find a good one on the classifieds forum in here. Other than that just spend as much time out there hunting as you can. For me it was a learn as you go process. Just go through the post techniques thread on here and you will find the answer to most any question you have. A lot of good guys on here.

Chad, these are all good replies,...however,.....I would definitely buy a hand call such as an open reed distress call and practice ,practice and then practice some more!!! I have mine in my truck and practice nearly every day going to and from work. The self satisfaction of calling one in with a mouth call will peg your confidence/orgasmatron meter slap out when you connect that way!! Dont get me wrong, I have an e-caller too but I always will lay down some coaxing mouth calls when I first get to a stand for a few minutes. John

Get a good ecaller to start with. I didn't want to buy a 200 dollar call, but after buying two calls for 100 and 70 bucks each and then going to a 200 buck caller it would have been much cheaper to get it right the first time. It really depends on if you are going to really get out and hunt or if you are going to go three times a year.
That being said you need to always carry a mouth call with you. Electronics fail and batteries die. Crap one time I forgot to turn the call on and instead of stomping back out 70 yards and back I just used the mouth calls. You can pick up a good custom open reed call on the forum for 20ish dollars.

I'll start looking around for some calls to get started. I saw the post from Stu, and if he or anyone else is in the area, I wouldn't mind sitting in on a hunt sometime and getting some first hand experience from someone thats done it before. Anyway thanks for the pointer's, and I'll try to post the rest of my rookie questions to a more appropriate topic.

I've called & killed some critters. I'm no pro, but I do have some experience. Most of it in the desert SW, LOL
Now that we've gotten settled in here it would be great fun to get out & try it in this area. I really wouldn't mind getting into some deer & especially hogs somewhere around here.
MS is very close, I haven't looked up non-res license costs yet. I do have a current statewide AL license.

Hey guys! I'm from Blount County in North Alabama. I bought a Rock River Predator Pursuit about two years ago to hunt coyotes with. I hunted that year a few times but didn't go any last year. I plan to get after them after deer season closes on January 31st. I hope to post pictures of my kills.
Good luck and Happy New Year!

Welcome to all the new folks on the thread, glad to hear from you all !! I went down to Greene Co with a hunting buddy at his club this past Monday afternoon and all day Tuesday and did some deer hunting/coyote hunting. Saw a few deer both days and even had a small 6 point walk not 40 ft from my tree stand as he was working his scrape line, that was cool to watch that as he was just taking his sweet time and not in any hurry at all and I watched him for a good 20 minutes right in front of me. I did take my coyote stuff with me and we tried several different locations on the property and saw all kinds of yote scat that was full of rabbit hair on the roads going to the green fields but for the life of me I could not get them to come out and play either day. I guess Im getting a little discouraged yote-wise as this has been about the 5th different time we have been out and not even had as much as a sighting. We even stayed up until about 10:00pm Monday nite and went to hear if we could at least hear them howling to each other but we heard nothing at all on over 2000 acres of property. Thats odd because the night before I got there at the hunting club, one of the guys who was there said around 11:00pm the night before the woods were alive with all kinds of different packs were out howling and making just all kinds of music to each other. I am watching the wind when I set up my stands, I am not calling too loud or too often (that I would consider), I am changing up my sounds to not have the same old thing for them to listen to and as far as I know, it is just me and my buddy who are coyote calling on the property, and we are not calling them but for about once every 4 to 6 weekends apart. I know that we as hunters cannot in any way predict these varmits ,thats why they call it hunting, but it sure would be nice to score something or at least see one responding to a call every now and again, know what Im saying??? Yeah, Im going to keep at them no doubt, it is just disheartening to have such a dry spell of not seeing nothing for qute a while now......ok, Im through with my pitty party for the time being Anyone who wants to offer me any insite on what I may be doing wrong, Im all ears...?

At our club that start their greeting calls about 30 minutes till dark. Our coyotes seem to range out. I deer hunted last Friday afternoon and they started up about 5:00 sounded like they where on top of me. Hunted that Sunday afternoon about a mile east of the stand I heard them in on Friday and sure enough I heard them start about 30 minutes till dark and they where away off to the east. Had a buddy at a half mile to the east of me and he could hear them out past him to the east. Do you guys find they seem range out and not really hold to one area?

Welcome aboard waraot1 and Coach.
Coach I'm in St. Clair County. I live in Leeds but hunt all around St. Clair and part of Blount County. I know there's lots of good country up in Etowah County.
John,
Buddy just keep after em. I was on a bit of a hot streak for a while there. Called several in and had several sightings. But due to newbie mistakes and missed shots had little to show for it. Since then its been pretty tough for me too. I usually let my places rest 4-5 weeks or more before I return to call those places. Yet its still been real slow for me lately. I'm gonna get after em some more this weekend so hopefully I can turn it around. I get a little discouraged too but I keep my head up and just stay after em. It beats sitting on the couch is how I look at it. LOL.

Most of the places I hunt I already had connections to. Either thru my dad, who is a retired gamewarden, or from being a police officer. I meet a lot of people at work and most don't mind having a police officer on their property hunting.

Shelby county here, Helena. New to the forum and new to predator hunting. My 11 year old son was actually the one who read about this and got interested. He convinced his mom to order a Mojo predator decoy with his allowance money, (gotta love that).Looking for a place to hunt and ANY advice offered is appreciated. For me safety for my son is paramount. What do you guys think about hunting on the public management areas? Anybody who would be willing to host us would be appreciated, and we respect all rules and land.

Whats up fellers, lee county checking in. Raised in etowah co, but have always done most of my hunting in east central part of the state. I had my luck in order enough to take down 4 this fall and winter. 3 of them was a coincidence while deer hunting, but still a thrill for me. I'm gonna get after them a few more times now that deer season is over, and considering something in the .204 variety for this summer.
I wish AL would open up night time hunting and lights for coyotes, outside of deer season. Probably just wishful thinking though. Shotgun only would be fine by me, just so we could get out there without special permits. Any thoughts?

The 2014/15 Seasons and bag limits, draft is on the outdoor Alabama site. It looks like changes are highlighted in green, and there is a reference that says see 220-2-.07 for legal hunting hours. Does anyone know what this is?
This on the top of pg 9 under Coyote fox bobcat and piggies.

Hello Dead Right There, I will start next week and try to take a few off some property that has some deer predation from Coyotes. I usually wait until September but I have noticed the deer herd in this area becoming fewer and I believe that it is from late spring to summer predation on the fawns. Montana

Hey all you folks Hows it going with all of yall? Just checking in to say hi and to see if anyone is doing any hunting? I went out a few weeks ago with a friend of mine who has some land up in Lamar Co but we got up there a little late and we didnt see anything or hear any calling going on, then we came on back home before dark. I saw a few tracks in the dirt roads but nothing overwhelming. Whitey, you still around and are you hunting any or are you being smart and staying under the ac? LOL

I still haven't lined up any places to hunt down here. Been pretty hot, haven't put any effort into it. There are 3 WMA's in the county so I guess I can hunt them if nothing else, but it's gotta cool off some first LOL

Still have to get me a scope for it though. When you are out walking the new land, please watch out for them crawly bastages that slithers.

Hello Mr.John, I went with a friend to Perry Co. this last Saturday and called one up within 5 minutes on the very first stand. He shot 3 times and threw dust all over him but couldn't connect. It came to a Primos mouth call pup in distress. We made 3 more stands but all we got was a load of ticks. Had a ball [beeep]. I've ragged him unmerciful about his 6mm that he bragged on ever since. I'd love to hook up with you and see what we could get going once the weather cools a little. I'll host if you're interested. Montana Slim, we're pretty close. Think you might want to go too?

Hey guys,
I haven't been on here in awhile but I still see John and Whitey are still chatting it up! LOL. I see several new Alabama guys on here.
I know it has been rough with the heat but I tell you guys if you have some private property to hunt and the landowner is cool you might ask them their opinions on letting you predator hunt at night. If their ok with it all you gotta do is get a permit from the gamewarden and your good to go. That's the best approach this time of year.

The landowner has to get the night permit and puts your name on a list of permissible hunters. The hunter is actually a contractor and the land owner is the host. All of my private land owners said they would get the permits but none of them ever did...

Lefty,
I know that's technically how it's supposed to go but if your landowner is ok with it then you can contact the gamewarden yourself and inquire about a night permit. It's really not too difficult unless your local gamewarden insists the request come from the landowner. I currently have a night permit and it wasn't too difficult to obtain.

I believe the game wardens in my area are "by the book" types.... Id like to try a night hunt. Thats if i can keep the over imagination, 6 yr old, scared of the creatures in the dark ideas out of my head.....lol

Hi DRT and others,... sorry I havent been as prompt getting back to yall to see what you've been doing,..work has been kicking my big fat behind lately You better know I'd like to go with you DRT!!!! Where would you be hunting at ( location)? And yes, the crawly little bugs are just plain bad out there right now. How bad did you get attacked by the ticks? I HATE those things!!!!!!!!!!! Sounds like you had a real good hunt if you were able to call one up that quick and to shotgun distance at that...pretty cool indeed! Was it an early morning hunt before it got blazing hot? Yep Whitey and I try to keep things active here, although he is certainly getting to go out more than I am at the moment. Whitey is a great hunter and puts the fur on the ground more times than not and I have been outsmarted the last several times Ive been able to go out. But, I still enjoy getting out and try to learn something new on each hunt. Sooner or later I'll connect with a song dog again!!

John, I'm in southern Fayette county. I'll send you a pm if I can figure it out. Man, the ticks were bad! We'd washed down with spray and had a thermocell going and still got covered. Most of the land we hunted was in pasture with the only cover being stands of johnson grass with a little timothy grass thrown in and maybe a stand of privvy bushes. Them ticks must love that johnson grass cause when we'd get up we were covered. Had a ball [beeep].

Lefty,
I know what you mean. I got lucky I guess by knowing the gamewardens in my area pretty well. It's probably too close to deer season to get one now but it might be something you could work on getting once February rolls around.
I know what you mean about the young kid too. My 11-year-old has been out at night with me a couple times. But my 8-year-old decided out of nowhere a few weeks ago that she wanted to go too. So I loaded them both up and decided I was only gonna call and my oldest would be the shooter and my youngest would shine a light and be a spectator. Low and behold we had coyotes coming from every direction it seemed like in two stands. One came within a range I felt comfortable letting her shoot. She missed and was tore up about it for a week. But it was a great moment with my kids and quite an experience for them both. Other than the bugs of course. LOL.

Has anyone been having any luck in DeKalb or Marshall Counties. I've been 5-6 times past month without a sighting. Called up hawks crows and a couple of does but no coyote. Had pretty good luck this past winter with calling them up but got busted more than got to shoot.

I hate you! LOL.... Good job David. So you dropped a nice deer AND a yote too? Cant tell for sure but it looks to be around an 8 point? And I see that you gave that yote some glaucoma medicine because he sure is bugged eyed after you got through with him.

We went deer hunting Monday morning and after sitting down for ten minutes he came running in. Muzzleloader at 70 yards with iron sights. He's 7 point 15 1/2 inside spread, 125 pounds dressed.
As for the coyote, her eyes didn't want to stay in after that vmax come running in the front door. I had another picture but it might be a little graphic for the site. I'll give you a call and fill you in on the rest of the story.

Welcome all. About nailed a large turbo-yote while east bound on 85 near Tuskegee National Forest on a sunny afternoon. Told my wife look,, pointed,, it was crossing smack in front of us going 200 mph, all stretched out, running flat out. It just barely beat us to the impact point and kept heading north across the other lane of 85. No fleas or ticks on that one.. we were doing at least the speed limit ourselves, evasive action was not an option.

I live in North Florida but have a hunting lease in Butler County Alabama near Honoraville and we have a lot of coyote tracks. I haven't had a chance yet to call any because I've only looked around on the lease so far because we took over this June 1st. Anyone near there that want's to help me thin these tracks that presumably have coyotes somewhere ahead of them? $bob$

Might be possible. I'm in Mobile, looks to be about a 2.5 hr drive each way. Long for a day trip but possible. Calling is going to be both tough & miserable right now, it's hotter than spring bunnies going at it in a wool sock LOL

Stu,
I'd be delighted to hunt with and learn from you and I'll send you a PM in the morning.
I agree that it's too hot now.
Thanks! $bob$

Hey guys. I just moved to the harpersville, childersburg, sylacauga area. We moved here from Southwest Mississippi, so i already have experience with the type of terrain and cover obstacles that are evident here. Ive already obtained permission to hunt several areas. Was wondering if anyone else in the area are also predator hunters and, if so, would you be interested in teaming up. If you have little experience, dont worry, I enjoy taking newbies too.

we've had a few teaser days of really nice temps but it's still generally on the hot side. Shouldn't be that long now, though.

By eight it was mid 70's and with all the hill climbing I was nice and toasty. But the mornings have been nice at low 60's here. You can get in a couple of stands before it starts heating up.

This is killing me I live in Pensacola Florida and can't start coyote hunting until November 11th which is when small game season roles around. So I have to pick either hunt deer or coyotes and coyotes are knocking at the door.....

I've shot two in the past month on a cattle farm. One was 441yds with my .223 and the other was this past Saturday at 209yds with my new custom built 22-243 Winchester. We have more success in the warmer months to pattern them just lay and wait. Once it turns cold we will start calling again.

Wiffed on a double today. Felt like I hit the first one. Thought I saw him fall so I swung to the next one and missed it outright. Went to retrieve the first one and no signs of anything. I don't know if I missed or had a splash or made a poor shot and it got up. Oh well.

Brian and I got out today. Made a few stands even with it misting. About 9ish he howled and got a pack fired up. We went to pup distress and waited but nothing. So we shifted over to a small clearing and setup again. He howled again and they started yipping. Another minute or so of pup and still nothing. So he went into snow shoe hair. After a minute or so she came walking in and I let the air out of her. Good day.
