National Association for Gun Rights Doubles ATF M855 Ammo Ban Comments
132,000 petitions more than doubles the number the ATF claims to have received so far
Fredericksburg, Va.- The National Association for Gun Rights announced that it hand delivered
132,662 petitions to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), more than
doubling the number of public comments the agency has received so far in response to its proposed
ban on M855 ammunition.
The petitions, all in opposition to the ban, were collected online beginning when the ATF proposed
the ban on February 14, and delivered on Friday despite the agency’s decision to hold off on the
proposal last week.
“It’s a delay tactic, period,” said NAGR President Dudley Brown, “By going around Congress to
ban ammunition, the BATF bit off more than they could chew, and they knew it. They didn’t say
they’re giving up on the ammo ban, only that they’re going to wait and try a different approach once
things quiet down.”
While the M855 Ammunition ban may be on hold at the ATF -- for now -- the proposal has by no
means been defeated.
Also on Friday, Congressional Democrats issued an appeal to the ATF, urging the agency to
reconsider their push to ban this common .223 caliber ammunition, which is used in tens of
thousands of legally owned rifles.
Additionally, four Democrats have introduced the ban as an anti-gun bill in Congress.
“President Obama and Congressional Democrats are worried they don’t have the votes to outright
ban guns, so they’re coming after ammo. It’s that simple,” stated Brown, “the four million members
and supporters of the National Association for Gun Rights will be there to oppose any Federal
restrictions on ammunition proposed in Congress or by the BATF now, and in the future.”
Monday is the final day for the original comment period.
