CVA Optima

Basically the original breech plug is flat at the end of the
plug, and the Blackhorn 209 plug is a deep cup with the flash
hole in the bottom of the cup. I talked to CVA about it,
and apparently this breech plug was designed by the engineers
at Western Powder(makers of Blackhorn 209). I shot mine
this weekend, comparing the two, and the BH 209 breech
plug is definitely worth the money. I don't get the POI
drift on the first couple of shot, that the old breech plug
suffered from. With the BP209 plug, the clean bore shot was
about 2" higher than the fouled shots, and dead on right to
left. After the clean bore shot, I was shooting about 1.5"
groups at 100 yards, with 295 gr. Powerbelts. And some of that
was the shooter shooting a 7x scope with a fine ballistic
reticule into the sun. With the old breech plug the clean
bore shot started out 5" left of Point of Aim, shot #2 was
about 2" left, and then the subsequent shots were at the
point of aim. Fouling seems to be considerably less with
the new plug, as well.

I had planned on shooting through a chrono for testing the 2 plugs... My RCBS Ammomaster chrono is junk though and went bad for the THIRD time. They got an email from an unhappy customer last night as well.

ROCKYMTHUNTER,the information that I have read from your reports has been good for me, thanks. one more thing I would like to know, where did you get the rear peep sight for you optima? spike

My Optima has the original breech plug in it... do you think I should get a BH breech plug... will it make that much differance...? If so... where could I find one...?

No, I didn't chrony the load. I shoot 80 gr.s weighed, which
is about 4 gr.s below max. I am more interested in an
accurate load, near the maximum weighed charge, and I have
one. I will be characterizing the load out to 200 yards, and
when I do that, I will run it over the chrony. I am guessing
between 1800-1900 FPS from Western's load data.

On the question of is it worth it, the plug was about $25
shipped, IIRC. I need to shoot more before I can say the
special plug is measurably more accurate, but the consistency
off a clean bore makes it worth the cost for me. I was
really frustrated with the clean bore shot shooting way left,
and then slowly walking into the point of aim with a second
or third shot. So before each hunting season, and after each
time the gun got wet, and cleaned, I would have to shoot at
least 3 shots to be sure I was back on target...I did not
like that aspect of ML shooting. With this plug, I really
don't even have to foul shoot(clean bore shot is 2" high of
point of aim). Just make sure I use the upper hash on my
ballistic reticule, and I am good to go. Or if I do foul
shoot one, then I am back on reticule center at 100 yards.

As for purchasing one, just search on "cva ac1611bh breech
plug" and there will be a number of choices.

www.blackhorn209.com Their plug has a bigger dish for the powder to sit in as well as a smoother flowing flash channel.

Blackhorn sells theirs in a "Kit" for $39.95. Hinderlands has just the plug for $16.22, but they want $9.99 to ship. Kinda pricey shipping!

Wall mart has a stainless synthetic Optima for $217.00 is this a good deal?
