Which rimfire, 22 WMR or 17 HMR for coyote?

I can only compare the results of either on Jack rabbits. We have some HUGE JRs out here.

Hit with a .17HMR they scurry off a bit and die.
Hit with a .22WMR they flop over dead.

Bigger pill = more FPE, no? CNS disruption is what you're after, either collaterally or initially.

But I'm no scientist.

I chronoed the 50gr. Feds out of my 24"barrel Ruger VMBZ 22 magnum and got just over 1,600fps. And shot them into wet news paper at 70yd. and they did very good, seems like 7"penetration good weight retension and mushroom out to I think .272. I think they still weighted 45 46gr. But never used them on game. Guess I need to give them a try.

Hi, just joined was looking for some information. But I did have a response to the .17HMR vs .22MAG. Both rounds are excellent for Coy, I say this as I have a small chicken and duck farm. My preference is the V17. Rounds are a bit cheaper and as long as you do a head or chest shot they drop. I can also run out a little further with the .17 without having to adjust my elevation. As for as FPE goes, it doesnt take much to send a small projectile through the carcass. Also, I do skin em and sell the hide, never have I opened one up that didnt look like a grenade went off in the chest cavity. So I say use what you want and a .17HMR will drop a Coy in less than a heartbeat! Thanks for letting me give my view!

I’m to 7 coyotes with a 17hmr. 2 required 2 shots. My best head shot to date was 115 yards, kneeling, he was walking away, between the ears and he just crumpled. Real sack of potatoes. Never kicked or anything. 17g Hornady vmax. Longest kill was 160 yards into the lungs. I’ve never owned a 22 mag to try it with but I think they’re both good!

My first coyote took 3 hmr to the ribs and I never recovered him. Wrong bullet and wrong distance, but I thought 3 would do it. I was wrong.

17 WSM........

"However, if you must use a rimfire on predators, opt for the 25-grain .17 WSM load. Using its superior velocity, the .17 can and will knock down any coyote within 150 yards as long as you hit your mark. You’ll be surprised at the long-range killing power of this little thumper, and you’ll save a few bucks in the process."

Well, I will jump in for what it's worth. I don't predator hunt per se with a rim fire, but I did shoot one coyote and one bobcat with a .22 mag, both in or about 75 yards. Both hit the dirt. The coyote was head shot and the bobcat in the shoulder.

As for the HMR, I really like the little cartridge, the accuracy and flat shooting ability out to 100 yards is amazing for such a tiny cartridge. We have shot numerous eastern groundhogs with the 22 mag and HMR and our choice is the HMR due to those characteristics (accurate and flat shooting). The HMR is capable of consistent head shots on groundhogs too 100 yards and further. That combined with the 20 gr. CCI Game Point makes a great combination.

If I were shooting coyotes with an HMR, I would take head shots only, and though I don't coyote hunt with that cartridge, I would not hesitate to use it under those circumstances if I found myself required to use a rimfire.
