which 20 cal cartridge

Hey guys, after seeing the post on bullet cutaways I'm thinking of looking into building a 20 caliber rifle built around the 40 noslers. My main intent is coyotes to a max of about 400 yards.

I currently have a 204 Ruger that I like but I'm wanting to push these or the 40 bergers a little faster than what the 204 will do.

My criteria are:
Has to feed reliably in a bolt action
Has to be able to push a 40 gr pill 3950-4000 in a 24" barrel
Has to be able to be sized in 1 or 2 steps.

My thoughts right now are:
20 PPC built on a Sako PPC feeder action
20-250 loaded to the above velocities
Maybe a 20-223 AI but I'm not sure if it will reach 3950
20-224 weatherby mag(yes with all the pointless case features)

What are you're thoughts, ideas I've missed?

I'm pretty sure you would be able to attain the 3950-4000 fps you want with the 40's in a 20-223AI with the right powder and brass combo.

I've thought about the BR but it seems like it isn't one to feed well in a repeater. Haven't thought about the 20x47 isn't the case capacity greater than the 22-250?

I doubt the 20 Practical would reach the velocities he's wanting to achieve with the barrel length he's wanting to use.

A little mag modification and they feed fine, i have done 3 or 4 of them...

The 22-250 and the 47L case is pretty close, just some i have checked the 47L case has been about 1.3 to 1.8 grs more water capacity... Depends on case manufacturer.

There is less than three inches differance in drop and drift between the nosler 40 gr 20 cal and 22cal bullet @500yards. Just build or buy a 22-250 1/14 twist and save time working brass.

What about a 20-260Rem Improved shooting the 55 Berger at around 4000, maybe 4000+, FPS???

The smith I use has the reamers to build one but they haven't had enough time to build a shop gun yet. I can't decide if I want to go that route or do a fast twist 22-284 and shoot the 90's. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

.

That would be basically the same as a 20/243. Overbore as heck but if you do not shoot full throttle all the time that would work.

Crank the speeds up and likely you and your barrel maker will soon be on a first name basis.

Yeah, that's not the point though. If I was gonna run a 22-250 I'd use 52 gr bergers.

I like the idea of a 20-243.... Lol I don't like it in real life. 500 rd barrel life?

Well, I wouldn't say that. This is copy/paste, using a 24" tube. Of course YMMV.

40GR H335 25.0 3583 Kevin's barrel break-in load
40GR H4198 24.0 3907 Hodgdon "Extreme" Powder
40GR IMR4895 26.0 3883 Kevin: 0.288" 5-shot group
40GR N133 25.0 3959 Kevin: 0.227" 5-shot group

I'm not too sure on those velocities. I use more 4985 than that with the 204 and am only pushing them 3950. I can't see the minor differences in the case leading to that much more efficient.

If I end up being able to work enough this winter, as I work construction. I've narrowed it down to 20 250 on a 700, defiance stryker ridge or deviant; or the ppc on the sako ppc repeater. Put it in a McMillan adjustable game warden with a timney. And either a vx6 3-18x50 or a swaro z6.

I'd be tempted to do the PPC just for the uniqueness of having a .20 PPC repeater.

Both my .20BR's will get 4K out of 40's easy enough, with 24" barrels. Imagine you could get there with the slightly smaller capacity PPC okay.

My .20 Dasher is my velocity king, but it also has a 28" barrel.

Heck yeah you could form your brass with one barrel and have formed brass ready to go for the 2nd barrel, lol
