They have done what they started to do and run many of the small independants out of business...
I always laugh when I read this!
Has anybody seen WalMart send huge busses out every day to round people up and then make them shop there? Who owns all of those cars in their parking lot?
It's the locals that just got tired of paying the 'mom and pops' full retail pricing that shut down the 'mom and pops'.
Same thing happened to GM, Ford, and Chrysler. While they were basking in their huge margins, those little cars from overseas with the mostly small profit margins caught them napping and stole their customers.
Remember Montgomery Wards? J.C. Penneys? Sears? WalMart will get too big for their britches, a new guy will come along, and WalMart will fall by the wayside eventually. Right now, they have almost achieved critical mass. The new upscale stores are a desperate attempt to hang on a little longer. They are not proving successful in the test markets.
Wall Street just wants MORE. They don't care how they achieve it as long as those dividends keep rolling in.
Simple Economics in a fickle society whose only loyalty is to their wallet. WalMart just happens to be on top now so they take all of the arrows.
