My buddies and I shoot nothing bigger than 4” plates out to 400 yards, and then we usually shoot for the bolt heads on the plates.
We have a little 2” round plate at 325 yards that gets worn out every time we shoot.
Past 400 we shoot 6, 8, and 10 inch out to 1200 yards.

I shoot 8 inch at 300 yards , and 3 inch at 100 yards . 1/2 steel at 300 and 3/8 steel at 100 . I shoot .308 at 300 and .223 and smaller at 100. My new favorite is .22 Hornet .

Plates and stands at a public range are going to get trashed at 100-200 yards by fast calibers if impact velocity exceeds 2800 fps. It only takes one moron to ruin it for everybody. You're going to have to assume everyone is a moron and hang the plates no closer than 300 yards if you want them to last.

A friend ame by a few weeks ago with some 3/8 inch steel plates he had come across and wanted to use for targets. He was shooting 250 yards here with my customized.243 using 55 grain ballistic tips and I was surprised and impressed at the damage those little rounds did to that steel.

We use 8” round AR500 plates for 100, 200, and 500 yards we have a couple 12” plates for 1000 yard, but so far we haven’t got our 1000 yard target setup yet.
