I know a guy that lives way out in middle of the Mark Twain National Forest. One Saturday he and his wife drove to town, she had something or other scheduled to do and he dropped her off and went to the only place in town other than Wal-Mart that has guns, the local pawn shop. This guy bought a used Mossberg pump shotgun while there and stuck it in the backseat of his truck. He went on to pick up his wife, they made a grocery order while in town and had lunch at the local diner. A pretty good day in town for him.
He drives through several miles of MTNF going in and out to the highway from his home. On his way home that day he got stopped by a USFS Ranger. The USFS LEO asked to see the shotgun in the backseat. Turned out the shotgun didn't have a plug in the magazine. It was turkey season. No way this guy that bought the shotgun knew that the gun didn't have a plug yet. Wouldn't matter anyway, he wasn't hunting. In fact, there were NO shotgun shells in the vehicle!
However, even though shown the sales slip from just hours before, the car full of groceries, the fact this guy and his wife were not dressed for hunting, though nothing might remotely suggest he was illegally turkey hunting - he got a ticket for hunting with an unplugged shotgun! To his credit the prosecutor wouldn't pursue charges and voided the ticket. Hopefully somebody reeled the USFS Ranger in and have him a remedial course in law enforcement 101.
