I did another attempt at painting my rifle and was told a clear coat will help with oil and cleaning products. So I just got a normal can of rattle can clear and I was using flat paint for the other colors because that is the appearance I wanted and the clear made it Glossy so Is there a good dull looking clear coat or flat clear or did I use too much or what I only went over it twice..

You can get matte clear from Krylon.

It still leaves a little shinier surface than it will be with just the paint. I've used it on a couple rifles and what I did was just to use 0000 steel wool to knock the shine down a little. I don't paint many rifles anymore, but when I do I just skip the clear and touch it up when necessary. Good Luck.

I just finished one in matte spray poly. Put on 8 coats with soapy wet 0000 steel wool sanding in between and it came out great and has a nice feel to the stock.

You could also just go over the clear coat with #0000 steel wool and that would dull it.
