U know its bad when the GOV Insurance Agent and the Rancher- both
call u in the same day--its a fact coyotes are hungry critters and
those that like the taste of beef-become a problem fast at todays veal
prices- but yet some rancher claim they never get bothered by them
i have been thinking with the explosion of our gopher population and
all the BB birds nest /n eggs - Old HairBall would stay satisfied and
keep away from BB Beef- but - 3 taken in 2 nights- to the south west
about 45 mins -from home -is the report -- so---with urgency
expressed in both messages - i headed out early - needing headlights
to complete the first 1/2 hour-
I stashed the Tacoma in the old yard just 15 mins after 5 am --morning
light is alway my favorite light - everything always having different
shadows to it n all
the land scape before me-- has -nice little coulee running east -
the rest of it --all falling to the north of my position - i choose my
nest and give up on about 60 degrees of the compass -pretty much
owning the remaining 300 degrees of field view-
i had pre scouted it and knew where to b so - almost text book like -
my last set up- was 3 days earlier -- i had 2 on the end of the barrel
- at 60 yards -and--well --some of the fanciest hot lead dodging x 4--
make yourself small -- and run like the wind-- trickery-- i have ever
seen - -bla bla bla ) --- i was seeking revenge
- and - was prepared and ready when at 4 mins - the big Alpha male
showed up on the run -right down the pipe--- all i did was say hello
and - here he come-
at 60 yards I threw my left arm up- and the big boy spun and opened
it up making for exit --
- i was real temped to fire on the run but held off --instead raised
my arm again this time-- him seeing it - slowing down --coming to a
halt - 185 yrds- i knew my wind was good so he had not scented me -- the big
eye had him pinned on 10x--i centered fired - with big puff of hair #
#1034 Alpha male-sable straw sable white-- on the edge of the calving
pasture field --no more beef for him-
its early so with good intensions - i point the truck to my next set up-
beside this old barn granary - i had seen a small coyote exiting the
calving pasture - with the binos - it had run the road - crossing
into the west side drainage - so I set up on her - and 3 mins of
worried woodpecker - she was inside 140 yrds -#1035 wet female -sub
adult- scrub sable sable scub- -
My brother in law called wanted to know if i could help out a bit - so
check it out -- my ride - the rest of the day seeding lentils - at 5
MPH- - they will seed about 18000 acres -
I was back to the ranch Thursday morning about 6 am - - again morning
light is amazing ---
-1st set - i send out a hello - getting aggressive response close to
my left -- and a raspy werewolf howl from the south- i have never
heard this howl before -
I reposition the Tac and sit quiet -- at 4 mins i see a set of
ears and white head top out on the horizon about 400 yrds - on my
left- i dare not move-- - i am down near the bush centre right
-
soon he disappears on his advance --i position again and this time at
266 yards he tops out again - but only his head and shoulders -- i
have him on 10x and I know by his appearance he has me figured and is
not going to stick it out -- his ears laid back - head pointing
directly at me --he is only 4 inches wide- i center the big eye on the
black dot of his nose and touch off---The 55 grain serria catching him
-- square on-- spot level-- removing his top row of teeth -#1036 Alpha

next set - 7:30 am -- unseasonably warm and with buggs -- - i have set
up here before - into some sage brush- the results speak for them self
--
at 16 mins and after watching a group of 5 yodies standing barking at
me -for 5 mins- they/them at 800 yrds-a family group-standing their
ground -sounding off-- it must have been a territorial thing cuz they
could not know what i was -- but they wanted to- know - as did this
big guy here -i was focused on watching this group barking at me when
I realized --
hey there is one standing to my right at 3: oclock -120 yards-- and
he was nice enough to stay put while i lifted the gun and settled in
on him -# 1037 - Adult Alpha male- white sable white straw - a beef
eater for sure and till the bugs are done with them together they
shall b -
I got out 2 morning ago late - headed to the same Ranch- - arriving
9:30 am --I knew where i wanted to get to and so was set up fast
overlooking the pasture - as the pics dictate a short nap of grass
stretching across the horizon - no trees- wide open -
with everything right - i send out a hello at 10 AM --- almost
immediately i receive the same strange werewolf like response -i got a
week ago-- its kinda spooky I feel my heart rate increase - and- I sit
quiet -
across the valley infront of me --1000 yards --I catch some movement -
a silhouette-- yes for sure it a coyote - with the range finder i
lock in from 834 yrds--- i can see him throw his head back and howl-
more traditional sounding now- and i can see the full black out line
of the dark coyote in the green landscape--
i know my limits -my little 55 gr wanted to try and fly the distance
but -on a good day 500 yrds is a big gap - n - i could see - i could
possibly make my way across to him ?? coming in on him down wind-
- he is not going come any closer --having already played this game
with me a week earlier -i am convinced and watch him lazy return to
the shelter spot of his choice and lay down -first like a sheep dog
all aware of everything --then like snoopy all four legs in the air
scrubbing his back into the brush -head to tail doing the worm upside-
down -???
i put it together and when I edged over the side hill -167 yrd was
the reading on the rang finder --- he was a sleep -
on 10 X i could see his ears twitch but he was pretty much in snooze
mode-
- i give him a sweet hello and he raised his head catching ID
