if your hand is anything like mine it will give me a good ahndfull, the color looks good too; you know its your judgment that amazes me the most. you just seem to know ahead what someone wants. keep in mind i'm not disappointed in the first call i got from you size finish or anything. i justed wanted another call different color than what i got.
Your call will finish out at 3.5" long and 1.5" bell. It'll be a loud sucker, but will have the pitch to drive those grey fox in your lap.
I don't know about being psychic on what call a person wants. I think it's simple. Get to know your customer, understand their experience level, calling style, targetted predators, calling terrain, etc.....then design them a call specific to their needs. I've been fortunate (married the right woman) to be able to call in a bunch of states and terrain, so it isn't that tough.
This call will be a good match for your 'ultra high' fox call that I built you. It'll be a raspy cottontail with high pitches and squeals and will be able to lay out a grey fox distress that'll echo the woods.
Ok...break time is over. Back to air channels.
Tony

guess i should of read all the posts there you answerd my question a couple posts ago
whats the bell hallow?? is that where the air channel under the reed flow into the bell itself??

i agree asmith and the call he made my brother (elkhorn) is one of the purest sounding howlers there is.. and for him to take time and walk through the steps of building a call and answering our questions is just unbelivable what a great man

Not angered at all ASmith. It was a good question...I was just having some fun with you. To me, a toneboard that sticks under pressure is like having a bolt action rifle that the bolt sticks and jams. Useless in the field. Mikeymike, Yes the air channel length will determine the pitch. Basically, the sound is produced by the reed slapping the toneboard. The longer the reed...the more travel up and down, thus a lower sound frequency/pitch. The shorter a reed, the shorter the travel....thus, higher frequency. Good question. The barrel hollow is the end of the call that I bored out...the exhaust. Ok, the air channels have been cut on these and drilled them to allow air all the way through. I tested them and 5 of them had to be taken back to the sander and do some work on the tip end. Here's an example of a toneboard that is too flat and one too steep. The top one is too flat. Very easy to blow, but locks up under pressure, due to not enough arc in the toneboard. The bottom one can handle a ton of pressure, but due to being so steep, it is hard to blow. Both of these are going to re-meet the sanding disk and get new toneboard arcs. I'm recording a couple samples of cottontail -vs- jackrabbit ones now... Tony

Ok, here is a recording of two of the calls. I'm just holding a piece of reed material on them. This is the same reed and I switch it to each call between the two sounds.
Cottontail -vs- Jackrabbit Recording
Ya'll can hear these sound files, correct?

You got it ASmith. There's a fine balance between too steep and too flat. Hit it right, and you get a toneboard that's easy to blow and can handle all the pressure you can put on it. Hit it even better, and you'll get rasp and harmonics (multiple pitches at the same time). To me, that's what makes one call seem to produce over others.

You're making me blush!
Believe me, my wife and 4 kids are watching the Idol Gives Back show without me...and their not real happy about it. I wanted to watch it, but really need to get these calls done.
Ok....Now that all the toneboards are working, it's time to shape the call on the belt sander. I'm going to give them all an ergonomic fit. You'll see a big difference in them. I've been calling in Texas, quite a few times, and got nickel size blood blisters on my lip from calling from sunset to sunrise for 4 to 7 nights straight. I've learned to design a toneboard that fits right in the mouth. It'll make them alot more comfortable, easier to control, and allow you to hold the call in your mouth, hands-free, while getting down on your scope.
Be right back (10 mins) with some more pictures....
Tony
