Now, about the trip!
JD made it to the house Wend eve, and we got loaded up to head out early Thursday morning. Man we had plenty of gear in the truck!
We headed out early on Thursday morning, good weather, cold should be a good day! But when we got just around Lexington KY, we smelled anti freeze and seen steam in the cab of the truck! Not good! We pulled into a gas station there and checked things out, we had a small leak in the heater core, but wasn’t to bad (for now) so, we got back on the road. Just down the road a little ways we hit rain! Cold rain I might add! We could not run the heat with out the cab filling up with steam from the heater core and it also made it leak a lot more so, it was a little cold. Ronnie and JB had already moved in and were waiting on us when we got there!
We made it in to the LBL early am to find everyone all holed up because of the rain, got everything unloaded and got moved into the cabin. Lots of guys stopped by Thursday to say hi, lots of BS going around! Even though we couldn’t hunt it was still a lot of fun! And a few cold ones to pass the time!...lol
Friday morning rolled around and we hooked up with Kytimberman for a day of calling. We got some local coyotes fired up and howling on the first stand but couldn’t do much with them. Next couple stands drew blanks. So, we headed in for lunch and I changed out the rifle for a shotgun and we hit the brush and hardwoods! Very first stand after lunch, we set up in some thick stuff along a creek bed were I had called coyotes in the past, the wind wasn’t good so I had to change up the set up a little. At the end of the stand on the last series of puppy wines and distress, I hear JD lip squeak to my right, I cought movement about that same time and seen the coyote drop down in the creek bed, I almost couldn’t believe my eyes! It was solid white! No black or grey marks on it at all that I could see! Very pretty coyote! The coyote was on its way out of town, so I howled and barked trying to get it to stop, no go! He was leaven. They way the coyote came in was a prime example of how they use the terrain here to there advantage. The coyote had stayed in the creek bed out of sight from us, then took a small deer trail right up on a hump to JD’s left to get a look at things. We never new he was there until it was to late, and he had figured out what was up. I finally got him to stop on the side of the hill for one last look but JD couldn’t see the coyote and I had a shotgun! (I needed the rifle!)
We made a couple more stands with no takers and on the last stand of the day we got another group fired up right at dark but couldn’t get them to work either, they were around a 100 yards for so in front of Kytimberman but her couldn’t see them. And we lost light! I think we made 7 stands on Friday.
Friday night was more of the same! Lots of guys stopping by and talking, calling, howling and just having a great time along with a few cold one’s to keep us going on no sleep!
On Saturday morning we got set up on a local group at daylight, had them fired up just over the break in the hill but again could not see them threw the brush. We decided to head over to the other side of the LBL to look at some new ground and that’s when the truck decided it had had enough and needed fixed, we couldn’t stand the smell and steam any more and headed for town to get parts! So, the rest of Saturday was spent working on the truck! We still didn’t get it fixed after they gave us the wrong heater core, another trip to town to find out they didn’t have the one we needed so we had to bypass the heater core!
After skinning a coyote for Straycat it was time for a cold one!
Saturday night was a blast! We gave away some nice prizes, had some of WayneP’s chili and talked to everyone till very late in the AM! It was great to see everyone again! And meet some great new people! Lots of fun! WayneP was up to his old tricks again and donated a lot of stuff back to be auctioned off, along with a few other that donated things back as well! He forced me to buy the light force light I was wanting to win…LOL
JB donated a 20.00 bill for the hunt, wayneP got drew for it and we auctioned it off, lets just say that after it was all over, it is being framed and sent to waneP, after a bidding contest for the bill between several members!
Sunday morning we had to head out early to try and get back before the Super Bowl game, we have a family get together every year and had orders not to miss it….lol
After meeting up with a few of the guys, getting packed up, we were on the road! Man what a cold ride! No Heat! All the way home. The closer we got to home the colder and more snow we found. It was a long ride!
Even though we had some problems and didn’t get to hunt much we had a blast! Good people and good friends are hard to beat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ronnie and JB! You guys are welcome to stay with us anytime! Thanks for the good times! You all are a hoot for sure!
SteveM! It was good to see you again! You welcome to stay as well!
For all those that didn’t make the hunt! You missed a good time! And a ton of fun! Sure hope to see everyone back next year and all those that couldn’t make it this year as well!
