Two small children in Tennessee are dead after being mauled to death by the family's two pit bulls, according to police.

Around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, two pit bulls viciously attacked a 2-year-old girl, a 5-month-old boy, and their mother inside their home in Millington, Tennessee, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

The toddler and the baby were pronounced dead at the home near Memphis.

The family's dogs also attacked the children's mother. She was rushed to Regional One in critical condition by Shelby County Fire paramedics. As of Thursday afternoon, the mother was upgraded to stable condition, according to detectives.

Marlo Matthews – a longtime dog-breeder – gave WREG-TV his opinion about pit bulls, "I know how loyal they can be. I know how loving they can be, but I also know how dangerous they can be."

Yes,it does happen all the time. 68% of the fatal dog attacks in this country since 2005 have been from Pit-bulls and Pit-bull mix breeds.

here we continue to blame the breed without acknowledging that many of the same folks who own "bully" breeds couldnt train a lab or a poodle - or a [beeep] housecat - to be a solid family pet.

we have an entire industry that has to fool (mostly new) dog owners that the training classes they offer are "dog training" classes and not "human training on how to raise, train and keep a good family dog" classes, because if they were honest about it, nobody would sign up. because everyone "knows" how to train their dog. but nobody who gives their opinion on specific breeds will - rarely if ever - acknowledge this little tidbit.

people also love to throw that 68% statistic out there.. but when you consider the total amount of dog bites that happen (around 4.5 million per year, 885,000 that require medical attention, 334300 of which are ER visits) that the 68% accounts for ONLY 346 (out of 521 total fatal attacks over 15+ years) fatal attacks by pitbulls. thats not even a fraction of a fraction of 1%. 0.007688% to be exact or roughly 0.039% of the total annual dog bites that require medical attention.

yet the American vetinary medical association studies indicate that Quote:no single breed stands out as the most dangerous, and that breed is not a dependable marker or predictor of dangerous behavior in dogs. better and more reliable indicators include owner behavior, training, sex, neuter status, dog location (urban vs rural) and even varying ownership trends over the passing of time or geographic location

additionally consider the following when discussing fatal attacks

According to an analysis of data from 2000-2015 by the National Canine Research Council, there are 7 controllable factors related to dog bite fatalities. In dog bite fatalities reported over the 15 year period, 75.5% were found to have 4 or more of the following criteria (11):

*No other person around to intervene - 86.9%
*The victim had no relationship with the dog - 83.7%
*The dog was not neutered or spayed - 77.9%
*The compromised physical ability of victim - 68.7%
*The dog is kept as a resident dog rather than a family pet - 70.4%
*Mismanagement of the dog - 39.3%
*Owner’s abuse or neglect of dog - 20.6%

13. 70.4% of Dog Bite Fatalities Were Not Family Pets
Along with the National Canine Research Council’s data study cited above, 70.4% of dog bite-related fatalities from 2000-2015 were not family pets. (11)

i know i'll never convince you anti pit-bull folks of anything else. but hopefully a few people in the back are willing to consider something other than the raw data manipulation to show just how "dangerous" these dogs are, relatively speaking.

"She put her body on top of Lilly's to try and protect her after the attack started," Bennard's husband's uncle, Jeff Gibson, told USA Today. "Both [dogs] started attacking her while she lay on Lilly."

The Oct. 5 attack lasted 10 minutes.

That would be a long ten minutes.

Things happen that changes lives forever. Things that can never be fixed. Things that visit at night.
Things that make you scream yourself awake. People deal with this stuff all the time.
A person needs to try to chose wisely the risks they take.
The experience could last the rest of your life.

nicely inflated headline for the injury count, also dog breed unknown at this time.

Quote:Most of the injuries occurred from people tripping and falling as they tried to run away from the animals and seek shelter in the school, Willard Intermediate School-South, district officials said.

But at least six people required medical attention from bites and scratches, including students and teachers who were taken to area hospitals for treatment.
