Tell me about the 22-250AI

AWS

Retired PM Staff
I just bought a barrel here and this is my first foray into AI cartridges.

The barrel headspaced perfect on my action with a Tubbs .250 lug, even the barrel markings landed in the right place, my old Rem 722(sako extractor) hasn't been used for a few years and really was a perfect donor for this barrel. It even feeds as slick as it did when it was a 300 Sav and then a regular 22-250.

A little reading a little reading and a few mentioned that 220 Swift data would work and I put together 10 rounds with 4320 and 52gr Speer HP's. I started with a max standard 22-250 load that is a middle ground load for the 220 Swift.

I'll put it on paper tomorrow, I hope with 5-7 rounds that will leave me three to hunt with on the way home. I have it set up with an Elite 4200 2.5-10.

I hope it shoots well.

Sounds like you are heading the right way and shouldn't have any problem getting it all fettled.

My .22-250AI is getting long in the throat and very near to needing a new barrel. So I guess I need to start thinking about getting a blank ordered and start the ball rolling now.

This will be the third barrel wore out on this action, first the factory .22-250 barrel and now two .22-250AI's. For whatever reason or reasons, this barrel didn't last as long as the first two. It's always been kind of a problem child of a barrel, but did shoot super good when it was all sorted. Doesn't shoot so super good anymore and load fiddling hasn't helped very much. Time for a new tube.

On your next barrel maybe put a call in to Bartlein barrels and talk to Frank about using one of their 400MODBB stainless barrels. They cost more but are supposed to last anywhere from 1.5-2 times longer than a regular 416 SS barrel.

Sierra has load data for 22-250 AI

They mention in their description notes that the cases they used had close to identical case capacity as the Swift.

Built one several years ago, but it was an 8 twist for the heavyweights.

75's at 3500.

Sold it and built a 22x47 Lapua instead.

Don't you love it when a plan comes together just right. As I said I loaded 10 rounds, I hunted in the morning and killed one coyote with the 20 P and headed to the range to sight the 22-250AI in. I had put the barrel on on Friday. Bore sighted it and the first round was left 2" and centered for elevation, eight clicks right and 6six up and it was 1 1/2" high at 100 yards. Lined up on the ram at 300 and whacked it so far on 10x, so I dialed it back to 2.5x and it was again 1 1/2" high at 100 yards. Four rounds to sight in.

Time to hunt. I was calling grass meadow in the mesquite expecting somewhat longer shots and got caught by a downwinder at 20 yards. Needless to say a 22-250AI is not fur friendly at 20 yards even more so when your gut shoot them with the first round and have to shoot h
them a second time, still have four rounds left for the next hunt.

Old time load, it might be nearly as old as I am 4320 and 52gr Speer HP Varmint bullet.
