I've watched many pairs of coyotes on the move. The female is most always the lead coyote. At times the male will take the lead. But she soon takes it back. When they bed down, she is most often the last to lay her head down. I view her as the wariest of the pair.

Territorial coyotes do have preferred bedding areas. I've noticed when the wind was from a specific area. They will often choose the same small area to bed down.

Pre-Sunrise to early morning hours. Most will be bedded down for the day. Unless pushed, they will lay in the same general spot. Sometimes getting up & moving a little ways. Before bedding down again with the prevailing wind at their backside. Most bedded coyotes I've seen prefer to be elevated when bedded down vs choosing a flat area as a bedding spot.
