Recommend Callers for Beginner

Im looking to get at least three closed reed mouth calls. A jack rabbit, cottontail and bird in distress. Would love to see the recommendation for the three. If you have whole setup already of calls that you enjoy please list them. Thank you very much for your help in advance.

On a closed reed call you will not find a huge difference in difficulty in use and they all use t h e same diameter reed.

Now sound may be another thing as they can be tuned to sound different.

Open Reed is a different story all together.

The cottontail and jackrabbit closed can and will normally be the same size or dimensions. Bore sizes may change but it’s in tuning mainly. But some can be built better for one or the other.
A bird distress is usually a smaller call or usually built specifically for these sounds. And tuned for it.
Like Crapshoot said open reeds are a whole different animal. But worth the effort to learn. While they take a little practice, you can get a whole variety of sounds out of a single call.

All you’ll ever need, likely not all you’ll ever want.

Comes with a distress and a coaxer, a howler, and some open reeds. You could call or message Kerry and he’d probably add an additional closed reed if you want jack and cottontail. Great beginner set that flat works.

Add this for another closed reed with a unique and SUCCESSFUL sound. Was using this call mixed with a Dan Thompson PC5 when calling my first coyote.

If you’re not afraid of an addictive habit, check out Kerry’s custom stuff.

Here is the link to the Dan Thompson calls, they are good calls also.

For most of my calling now I too use an open reed carver call. Ive had good luck with Scenery and Rick Robins (R & R/Bearmanric)close reed calls. I also have an orange TT open reed that I like. My biggest complaint about close reed calls wasn't the limited sound, they called coyotes just fine but I had to keep a couple inside my shirt to have fresh one when they froze up in the winter.
