Wolves on the Foxpro

I posted on CGN also but thought I'd share here as good stories help me get through the long winters and its that time of year.

I've been calling for wolves on and off for about 10 years with no luck on the foxpro and only shooting them when I bump into them unawares.

The other day set up on a long lake that works good for a west wind and it had been quite windy in the morning so we didn't go out. In the evening the wind died right off so my brother and I headed out.

Started the sequence with the flying squirrel distress on low volume for about 3 minutes then after a short pause moved to Harry woodpecker distress.

I had ranged various spots on the lake to have for reference and then switched on Snowshoe 1 on full volume with foxfade going. After less than a minute of that I noticed a black wolf on the lake at 800yds and after confirm with the rangefinder (7x) I noticed 2 more had stepped out and without delay they started running down the shore on the right of the picture above.

I lip squeaked to the backup singer who was situated about 20 yards to my left and slightly behind my spot that he better dust off his tikka and get ready.

They stopped briefly 2 or 3 times on the way to us and switched places between the black one and the big male.

In what seemed like 2 seconds the big male was crossing the 200yd marker and the other two were crossing the lake at 300 and 400 yards to circle around.

When the big male loped to a stop at 100 yards he looked like he knew something was up so I hit him with a 75gr Hornady HPBT from my Tikka CTR and he dropped in his tracks.

At the shot the black one took off and just as it was getting going my brother gave him some lead and hit it with a 143gr ELD-X from his 6.5 Creed and it fell at 310yds. The other one didn't need any more convincing and he zigged and zagged in 6th gear until he hit the shore and was uninjured by a couple hopeful shots.

We rounded them up and the 3rd one eventually crossed the lake at 700yd and howled at us for the next 30 minutes until we got to the truck.

90-100lb tawny male and a slightly smaller black female, the nicest shade I've seen.

WTG on getting a double on those wolfs. Hoping maybe next year to give it a try, my state sounds like a season going to happen. Again congrats.

Well done SJAR! Congratulations to you and your brother on the wolves. Two great looking wolves harvested in an equally great looking area.

My BinL is hoping for a permit in WI, he's called a number of them coyote hunting and had one at 20 yards while.deer hunting a week ago.

Great story, thanks for posting it. A wolf is on my bucket list. Sadly with all the anti hunting bs I Doubt I'll ever get a crack at one.

Really fine read and pics. CONGRATS to both of you. Wolf is at the top of my bucket list. Can't even see the next entry down.
