Dear TSRA Members, Family and Friends:

All Texans were horrified by the actions of the El Paso and Odessa killers and expect our elected leaders to take appropriate action in response to such disgusting crimes.
Texas State Rifle Association (TSRA) attended the two round table meetings called by Governor Greg Abbott that resulted in his Texas Safety Action Report. TSRA was encouraged by the direction taken and is looking forward to working with the Governor on recommendations to deal with violent criminals without infringing on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Texans. The Governor's Report presented ideas consistent with the U. S. and Texas constitutions for the Texas Legislature and state agencies to consider while working to make our communities safer.

The Report makes it clear that addressing the criminal violence problem is not going to be easy. Governor Abbott's Report included the following statement: "We must act with resolve in response to the despicable acts of violence we have witnessed in Texas. Solving the problems that have led to these horrific events will take more than governmental action. The complete solution will require more than what is outlined in this paper. It will require parents, families, churches, law enforcement, community groups, schools, and others working together to fortify the social fabric of our society. Texans are at our best when we are tested. Together, we will transcend this test, and forge an even better future for our state."

Some anti-gun politicians have seized upon the shootings to score political points rather than address the problems identified at the Governor's roundtable meetings and in his report Most, but not all, state Democrats teamed with gun control advocates to push the Governor to call a special session on guns. Apparently, they were not listening to the experts who spoke at the roundtables and who identified multi-faceted issues contributing to the breakdown in our culture. The problem is violence and its causes, not guns.
The Lieutenant Governor and Speaker of the House respectively, have announced the formation of Senate and House Select Committees on Mass Violence Prevention and Community Safety. TSRA attended and recruited witnesses to the House hearing held on Thursday, 10/10/2019, in Farmers Branch. The first Senate Hearing is Thursday - 10/17/19, 2:00 P.M., in Odessa College's Deaderick Hall in Odessa. TSRA will be attending all hearings.
Regarding one specific idea for additional legislation that has already been advanced, expanded background checks,

Senator Ted Cruz said the following: "Expanding background check requirements would be a mistake. The proposal would not have prevented any of these mass murders. We ought to be focusing seriously, substantively on how you stop these horrific crimes, and what they're proposing wouldn't do it." TSRA agrees!

The 2020 election is underway, and the stakes couldn't be higher, so we have to get involved and go to work now! Elections have consequences, and we are witnessing that firsthand with the actions of the anti-gun politicians campaigning on anti-gun platforms. Pro-Second Amendment voters must start now to prepare for next years' elections. We must educate fellow friends, family, and relatives gun owners on the importance of getting involved in the 2020 Elections. All pro-gun supporters must recognize the danger and importance of uniting towards the common goal of making sure that politicians who will protect our rights are elected next year. Our freedoms are under assault, and it is up to gun owners and freedom lovers alike to hold the line against these unprecedented attacks on our liberties.

We need to speak out and defend our rights, let our representatives know how we feel, and get to work supporting pro-Freedom candidates in the upcoming elections.
