I'm a rifle guy, I hunted em with a 410 shotgun when I was a kid & that was all we had. After years of experimenting I settled on my 77/22 ultra-lite boat-paddle in LR with a Leupold 2-7. Its favorite chow is Win Power-points. What do you use?

Old Marlin M39A with an aperture sight. I have other rifles, including a boat paddle stainless 77/22, but the old Marlin is just pure fun in the timber.

Belgium made T-bolt with a Weaver K-10. Although there are others, based on mood !

I still have the .410 single that I got when I was seven. It has been used by a few family members, but I track it down and get it back. It is an old Kresge. Well, old, as in 1977-ish.

^ The .410 we had was an old H&R given to us by a friend of my dad's. I think one of my cousin's youngsters has it now.

I don't get to chase squirrels very often, but when I do I like to use Savage 93R17 TR or a Smith and Wesson SW22 with a red dot. Both are accurate and fun.

Either a savage 93R17 GV .17hmr or remington 870 12ga. I love both, used the 17 for the past ten years and finally added a shotgun to the mix when I moved back to ohio this fall. Early season when there are still leaves on the trees I favor the 17, no issues sneaking around. Once things thin out/rabbit season opens I almost always have the 870.

I have a Marlin 81 TS .22 LR with a Tasco 3-9x40 that is a great one. It rides in the truck if I am going out and about or when I am bird hunting. If I am specifically hunting bunnies or squirrels I grab my Winchester 72. It is a great walk about rifle.

Marlin 917V 17HMR with 20gr. Game points. Pentax Gameseeker 4x-16x-44mm scope and form 1 suppressor. Head shots only with this rig, but that isn't usually an issue as accurate as it is.

I have never hunted them. I have thought about trying it this fall, just to get out in the trees more. Are squirrels any good to eat?

Sandhillhunter: They are great eating just boil them before you fry them and they will be as tender as anything you have ever eaten.

Young squirrels are tender enough to chicken fry with no other preparations. Old squirrels can be tough. There are several ways to get around that. Lots of recipes on the net if you look around.

Starting in the late 70's I have used a KDF (Kleinguenther) K22, double set triggers, Leupold rimfire low rings, Burris 6X AO mini scope, with RWS Subsonics.
Was going to post a photo, but lost the pictures when photobucket went down. I duplicated that setup with a Mauser 201 which is essentially the same rifle and will post a photo of that one. My never needed back up is a Remington 581/541 I call the "wannabe". It's a 581S action and bolt that is trued and threaded, 541T barrel, threaded, rechambered with a D2 chamber, 541S trigger, Leupold Low rimfire rings, Burris 6XAO mini scope, pillar bedded Bishop stock.

My favorite is a current production left hand Browning T Bolt with subsonic HP by Fiocchi. Currently the scope is a Hawke Vantage 3-9x40, but that may change. Don't have any photos of the rig.

K22, I kick myself too for nice guns I have sold or traded over the years. An early model Winchester 9422 and Colt New Frontier and Peacemaker 22’s with magnum cylinders come to mind, and these are just a few I wish I had back.

Those are some fine looking rifles in your post above.

Today I spoke with a local guy at a gun shop who does some gunsmith work, inquiring about lightening the trigger pull of my Remington 581. Any suggestions on that?

I still like to hunt with Winchester 67A with HP shorts it came with Lyman Sights.
Our Dad's bought them, so we had a rifle club in 1962
When I was a Boy Scout.
Later we went to the Naval Station and shot indoor small-bore with Winchester 52's, 1964-65.
The Navy set me up in ROTS. Off to college, I went.

Ruger 10-22, Green Mountain 17" Heavy Tapered Sporter Barrel 1:16 Twist, Volquartsen Trigger, Boyds Stock, Leoupold 3-9

Plenty of squirrels, rabbits, jacks, and even a few coyotes have all been taken with this rifle.

NULA Model 20 22LR was my go to for awhile. Then I found a Browning A-Bolt .22LR that is currently my go to. Has a Bushnell Elite 4-12x40 on it and shoots Federal Gold Metal Target well.

Also have a 77/22 and CZ 457 American.

When it's green out, I usually use the old single shot, Harrington & Richardson Topper model #58 in 410, but when it's brown out, I use my suppressed RAR in 300 BO, with a subsonic 130gn Speer Hot Core load I developed, goin 790 FPS. This along with a Vortex 4-16 Diamondback scope produces head shots to about 50 yards very easily, with very little to no hold over.

The expansion velocity on this projectile is waaaaay above the MV produced, and does NOT expand, but instead pencils through, so meat damage is minimal with proper shot placement. Head shots produce a helicopter effect flying squirrel, and very few (none) are not recovered.

I hunt in a very secluded, sparsely populated area, and take only low angle shots, as the Hot Core keeps on a'goin after deliverin its near head removing punch.

I thought I would try something different this year. I've been practicing with a s&w 617 revolver and a ruger Mklll with red dot this summer. I think my limit on distance for head shots is about 20 yards.

Handgunning squawks is a ton of fun. I have an old K22 that has killed a bunch. I have used Ruger MK semi autos over the years for squirrel hunting. I have also used centerfire .38 Special and .45 ACP with powderpuff wadcutter and SWC loads.

I just took the red dot off the mark lll and put a scope on. My wife and I had been shooting steel plates with the red dot and knocking one after another over. About 500 rounds in to shooting both of us began to miss. I put up a large paper target and found the zero had moved several inches.
Squirrel hunting season opens tomorrow and it looks like the revolver with open sights will be the handgun to carry.

A brand new CZ 455 "plastic" stock with 17 Mach II Lilja barrel toped off with a Burris Timberline 4.5-14x32 AO. I have the trigger down just under 1lb.

It is a killing machine. Shoots wicked flat.

Squirrels used to get a 40 grainer from a Mossberg 346B w/ Weaver 1.5-4.5 w/ dot. Wish there were more fox and lots less grey/blacks around here.

Certainly noting as nice as some of the pics I have seen here.
I use a 77/22 topped with an old vx 11 2-7 most of the time for tree rats.

I have several that I use depending on the mood.
Walks down memory lane get the winchester 61.
Just killing time equals the henry lever.
Long walks while scouting means that I will have the nylon 66.
Just for fun I use the TC super 14 with the 2x7 burris.

My Squirrel Rifle -Custom Winchester Model 52C patterned after author Charles Landis idea of the perfect squirrel rifle -
The rifle has a Lilja SS barrel which was added by Gordy Gitters. He also reblued the action and other parts and set the trigger pull. The custom chamber is excellent. The stock was prepared and finished by the late John Maxson of Washington Courthouse, Ohio. I purchased the stock from him at the Ohio Gun Collectors show in Wilmington, Ohio (6 shows each year).
I used the original sling swivels from the Model 52 target stock. It weights just over 9 lbs. with the Swarvowski 6 X 18 TDS reticle scope. It is well balanced. I have found that it shoots easily into small groups at 50 yds. using Lapua SS or SK SS ammo. I sighted in to hit on target at 40 yds. Using the 1st TDS bar it hits on target at 60 yds. At 70 yds. it hits squirrel sized targets when centered between the 1st & 2nd TDS bars.
The rifle's stock work was completed during the summer of 2008 by John Maxson. Gordy Gritters was the only gunsmith of the 3 smiths I checked with who was willing to chamber for the .22 LR at that time. He DID AN EXCELLENT JOB!!!!
The blank I think cost $ 800.00. It was purchased 2006, then when I visited John I always found one I liked better, so I traded. Both are excellent craftsmen.

Beautiful stock on that. What walnut is that? Claro, Turkish?
With the wide squared off forearm it puts me in mind of the Cooper Jackson Squirrel rifle. The stainless barrel adds to that Jackson look also.
The rifle is a bit heavier than I prefer, but you can't help but love that package. And a Winchester Model 52 is to die for.
Congratulations, that is one sweet looking rifle.

Hey 6mm06,
I forgot you ask me that question. Sorry.
You can change out the trigger spring or shorten the factory one. You can also drill and tap the housing then install a spring and make the trigger adjustable, similar to the 3 screw 541S triggers. I used to have the blueprints for doing that.
A Timney trigger for the 588 Rem. will work if you modify it some. Mainly you will need to modify the safety angle.

I've used a Savage Model 24 .22/.410 over/under since I was 16. That's 60 years. Bagged many a squirrel in the woods of northern Ohio.

I have a hand-me-down Sears 22 lr bolt gun that my Dad had for 45 years. Has a weaver 4x scope that the crosshairs are jagged at the outer edges. Still shoots great at 25 yards and still dropping squirrels.

I realy like my Mossberg 346B that I bought myself for HS graduation-60+yrs ago. It now has a Weaver 1.5-4.5 variable on it and I probably shot the old Dynapoints that I have a supply of.

Fish Bonez, my dad gave me a JC Hiccins single when I was 7 yrs old(68 yrs ago). I killed so many squirrels with it my dad said he never wanted a squirrel on the table again, he said that about rabbits too but kept right on eating them. Some where in the 1970's a scope was put on the rifle and the stock cut and added on again as each of the kids in the family started to shoot. I still have it.

One of my favorite squirrel rifle was a custom 1903 Springfield in 358 Norma mag. I loaded it with 148gr double ended wadcutters over a pinch of 700x and it would shoot cloverleafs at 50 yards, was as quite as 22lr and cut a 35 caliber hole through a squirrel that you could eat right up to. I killed a batch of them when I lived up near Fargo ND.

I used to brown the squirrel parts add sliced carrots and creamy tomato gravy and simmer until the carrots were tender and serve over rice. Mom would brown them with onions and simmer in a white gravy and serve over dumplings or large egg noodles.

I currently use a 25cal marauder tuned for Jumbo heavies and its a hammer on them. I am wanting the FX dreamline tactical compact with the bottle in 25cal. I like the 22cal but a call coons and the the 25 just hammers them. The dreamline series is great for me being left handed. I want a short compact gun for squirrels and I think the dreamline compact would be perfect.
