Changing Calibers on a Dillon Press

the springs are from the old powder measures. they've been redesigned at least a couple of times since then. my first one (1992) uses them.

Those were standard issue on the Dillon 300's I started with. Belt and suspenders with the new rig but I run them on all my newer Dillons too.

I added those to insure the bar returns. Mine came with the linkage that pulls it back but it always gave troubles. Springs have worked flawless for 15+ years.

+1 The first 450 I bought used a single spring. They later came out with dual springs.

Interesting products here:

A friend bought this kit (Ultimate Shellplate Bearing Kit for Dillon RL 550 B) for a 550 & liked it so much he bought another one for his 2nd 550.

They're also on amazon, but it's a bit cheaper to buy direct.

Folks,

Has anyone used the " Unique Tek " micrometer and bar in their 550 ? I'm wondering if it would be good just for small charges for pistols such as 32acp or is it also useful for .223 Remington and .30-06 rifle reloading ?

Thank you in advance for your time and help .

I installed this kit on my 550 and wished I could have done it twenty years ago!

I just installed the bearing kit on my 550 & ran into a minor issue.

Not to worry, I have it sorted out, just thought to pass the info on to you. I had recently installed an LED light on the press:

After installing the bearing kit, I was testing it & it had a double catch to it, once when the detent ball engaged & another mystery. Well, it turned out that the spurs on the new star wheel sit a bit different than the Dillon factory one does & the tips where catching on the bottom of the light strip:

I shaved the plastic down a bit. It still touches but just barely, can't feel it when operating the press.

The shellplate feels very solid & smooth, good upgrade.

the starwheel is a soft metal cast part. Turns out the new one (he gets them from Dillon and modifies them for the bearing & washers) is 0.008" farther across the tips than the old one is, just enough to hit. I'll file the tips down just a bit to help clear it fully.

This is probably the best thing besides an led light I've added to my press .Since I've added this I've never had a flipped or missed primer.I also put a nut on the top of the primer rod Not sure of the size but the added weight keeps your primers feeding perfect and the nut slides on and stays put on the rod thinking its a 3/4 ".I added a nut on to my square deal also.

When i installed mine it seemed to work correctly but I didn't have any primers in it & didn't have anything I needed to load.

Son brought his rifle over this week so I could work up some loads for it. This thing is clearly not adjusted right, mostly primers would not drop into the primer bar, the ones that did drop didn't stay in the primer cup about 50% of the time.

I swapped back to the stock guide plate & it works fine. I didn't have time to mess with it, will have to reinstall it later & try to get it working right.

The seller reports that some presses can have an issue that requires a shim. He has them & will provide them free if needed and provided instructions on how to test for this.

In my case I took it all apart & reassembled, took extra steps testing along the way & tweaking until I got it running right.
