my 10/22.... and now that we can suppressed hunt here... it'll be in the woods here soon quietly!

i regularly earhole chipmunks and red squirrels with it at 50 yds, and i know my holds pretty well out to [beeep] close to 100 with it.

dem squirrels are in for a big surprise this fall!

I picked up a Remington 597 heavy barrel. Seems kind of cheap, but priced accordingly. It's a serious tack driver. Those are 5R rifled barrels. Mine loves the CCI SGBs. It'll put 10 shots under a dime at 50 yards.

Ruger American 22 mag with a 2-7X scope, cause just might stumble into something bigger than a tree-rat.
Also, a few places I hunt are rimfire only, plus its threaded.

boy them little critters sure r fun to hunt ain't they.gc,that is a good read sure does bring back alot of memories every time I get to go after them.squirrel hunting was the first thing I ever got to go hunting on my own used dad's ol mod 37 20ga win.which i still have.thought i was a man when i finally talked um into letting me take a rifle.probably about 9 or 10 when that happened I have to admit it took awhile for the kill ratios to come back up after going to a 22lr.wow can't wait tell season comes back around!

CZ 452 American .22LR with a Nikon Prostaff 3-9 rimfire. Trigger breaks like a glass rod at 15oz.

To the OP- I used a 17m2 for a long time. Bought it from a member here. But m2 ammo became extremely hard to find and I let it go in favor of .22lr. Then 22 ammo became hard to find lol. It's made a good comeback around here though.

As far as accuracy goes I think a good bolt action .17 HMR or .22 lr is the way to go especially for still hunting, but if you plan on walking alot a good lightweight semi auto is great the 10/22 is probably the best in this class imo. I've always used a semi auto, my Marlin model 795 (I can't and will not suggest this rifle to anyone now though as I bought mine before Remington bought out Marlin and screwed up everything) has been a trusted companion when hunting squirrels and it has killed plenty of squirrels. It holds a half dollar sized group at 50 yards which imo is just great for what I paid and is perfect for squirrels, I'd never take a shot past 50 yards anyways unless I had to and even then would more than likely pass on the shot I am just not a good enough shooter to make a perfect head shot past that. I plan on getting a bolt action rimfire soon though leaning towards a .17 hmr and this should increase my effective range.

I recently bought a Ruger 10/22 and mounted a red dot as my walking squirrel gun. I also plan on buying a CZ 455 American .17 HMR and scoping it to snipe them at longer distances. These two guns are the best for these applications, IMO. Both will be suppressed with my SilencerCo Spectre.

I have often wondered how the 17m2 might work as a squirrel round. I figured it would be great provided it was accurate. As mentioned, the availability of ammo and price would be the downfall of using it. It never seemed to catch on like the HMR did.

Foxy, those little CZ 452 Americans are really sweet. I have one in a 17 HMR and love it. Super accurate and it's like a lightening bolt on crows and groundhogs.

The 17m2 was an awesome squirrel round. Just don't put it in the body. This was the 452 I sold when ammo got scarce.

Wow.....you guys have some very fine looking rigs. This is my favorite for sure. FX Royale 400 in 22 cal. Running an 18.1 grain lead airgun pellet at an average of 882 fps. 2 stage match trigger that breaks at 9 oz. It is very quiet and EXTREMELY accurate. More accurate than any rimfire I have ever had. Initial cost is a little stiff but after that, it is very economical to shoot....especially with todays cost and sketchy availability of 22 LR ammo.

This is 10 shots at 35 yards. Shot off of a solid shooting bench and a quality set of bags, on a perfectly still day.

It's also a very effective but very expensive fly swatter. LOL!.....also at 35 yards.

A late season hunt from a couple years ago. My Royale and my buddy's 25 cal Benjamin Marauder.

Wow!! Bowhunt, that is wonderful. Accurate is an understatement. I have wanted a quality air rifle most of my life, but seems I always had something else take prescidence.

What does a rifle like that cost if you don't mind me asking?

How well does the Marauder Perform, accuracy wise?

Thanks 6mm! The FX rifles have come down in price since I bought mine....although I did purchase mine used from a gentleman on an airgun forum. The Royales being produced today have some upgrades that mine does not have. The Royale 400 in walnut goes for around $1700 and they are $1560 if you want the synthetic stock. The Marauder is a fantastic rifle that is very easy to work on if need be. They run around $500 and I would definitely recommend the 25 cal if you want the best chance for an out of the box shooter. I have set several of these up for friends and I have not seen a 25 cal that wouldn't shoot. With the 22 cal Marauder it has been kind of a crap shoot as far a out of the box accuracy goes. The 22 cal barrels are made by Crosman and the 25 cal barrels are produced by Green Mountain.

Here are a few hunts with my 25 cal Benjamin Marauder. Not nearly as refined as the FX Royale but is certainly well suited for small game hunting. 2 stage trigger and a fully shrouded barrel. Very quiet, very accurate, and hits like a sledgehammer. For those of you that have never hunted with precision adult air rifles, you are really missing out on a lot of fun.

Bowhunt,

What scope is on the Marauder?

Thanks for the information about that. The Marauder looks and sounds interesting. I have read that a 25 caliber hits pretty darn hard. Do you have any targets that are representative of its accuracy?

It is a Hawke Sidewinder Tactical 30. 6.5-20X42. It has the half mildot reticle and is true mildot at 20X. Thanks 6mm......i do have some target pics that are representative of the Marauder's accuracy but i am on my phone right now and i will have to post when i can get to my laptop. As you can see, the squirrels in the pic were all head shot and if i recall that hunt correctly, the shots ranged from 17-68 yards. There are many options out there and if you are interested, i can definitely steer you in the right direction. I must warn you that many of the triggers on these air rifles will ruin you for most other triggers and i will not be held responsible for any addictions that you may incur. LOL! I will post more as soon as i get the opportunity.

I have a Crossman 10 pump BB/.177 pellet gun, spent $40 0n it 20 years ago, dead on @ 30yds. How much more do you need to shoot a squirrel or a bunny?

Powerfisher, maybe not everyone shoots squirrels and bunnies at 30 yards. Will your rifle shoot like Bowhunt's does at 35 yards? What about further? If yours works well for you, then you have all you need. Just don't insinuate that yours will meet everyone else's needs. That's narrow thinking.

There's one last reason for guys liking rifles different from yours. The answer is simple. Because they can. Because some guys like fine rifles and because people are different.

So, if your rifle suits you, then that's great. Enjoy.

No urinating contest going on here. Good for you and everybody else. I thought the topic that the OP put up was about squirrel artillery...All I did was state what I use to shoot little critters.....JMO, sorry, all I did was reply to the OPs question. Thanks for the bashing.....Happy Hunting.

I would believe all this to be true had you not included this....

"....How much more do you need to shoot a squirrel or a bunny?"

I don't think you were bashing me and i don't think that 6mm was bashing you.

I will answer your last question with a question......Since when does "need" have anything to do with it?! LOL. I love them all....even $40 ones...the more guns, the better smile

When I was young most were shot with a shotgun while grouse, pheasant or rabbit hunting.

On the trap line they were shot with a 22LR handgun, they added a little variety to the pot in camp along with rabbits and grouse.

The last few years I live in squirrel country I used a 358 Norma Magnum loaded with 148gr double ended wadcutters over a few grains of 700X, very accurate(they shot clover leafs at 50 yards), quite quiet, damage very little meat(you could eat right up to the bullet hole) and a great prelude to big game season. I killed a lot of squirrels with that rig.

FrankenCub,

I'm going to set my 22-250 up for using on smaller game with option to still use full power loads. Will use Case Black to mark reduced loads from Full Power ones. Have 'Trailboss' powder on hand. Any tips on loads? Other powders to look at? Bullets , powder, problems with primers? My 22-250 tends to like everything shot thru it. I use 52 gr bullets around 3500fps and can get less than 1" pretty easily from a light sporter rifle. I did free float barrel which did cost me group size but now it shoots to same point all the time regardless of temperature and moisture on wood stock.

I just started using a Benjamin Armada in .25 (think Marauder in tactical furniture). Just took my first game with it this evening: cottontail @ ~30 yds.

TC contender with .22lr match barrel. Likes cci mini-mags. Shoots one hole with the match stuff(on the rare occasion that I do my part) This pic was taken on Thanksgiving morning early in the hunt. Limited out(8) by 0915 that morning.

This was early in the hunt the morning after thanksgiving. Wound up with five that mourning. The rifle is a winchester wildcat that I made the stock for. It shoots good but nearly as good as the contender but it makes up for that because it does not take as much time to reload. I have had some get away while reloading the contender.

They are easy to make and have been the best carrying system I have ever used. They will carry about five good size red squirrels before the weight makes the clip come open. I take two or three with me.

I'm new to the forum and have been admiring the small game shooting irons pictured throughout the thread. I've hunted with a Browning BL-22 with a 4X Bushnell scope for about 30 years with great success, but just recently switched to a new Ruger 10-22 Takedown LITE with a HTA suppressor and Barska 3x9 IR reticle scope. Hunting with a suppressed rifle seems quite different than hunting without and I like it.

I had a Crossman 10 pump when I was a kid that had a rifled barrel and I killed a truck load of squirrels with that thing! Loved it so much but I wore it out and 10-15 years later when I bought the second, they no longer had rifled barrels. I wish I had bought a second on the old quality pieces. BB guns just keep getting more expensive and more cheaply made at the same time... No I use a Savage 93Fv 17 HMR accutrigger (I worked over), Marlin (900 series?) 22 Mag with a Rifle Basix trigger, and a Box stock 10-22 or Savage MKIIfv 22lr again worked accu trigger. All have scopes and work great. But Man I wish I still had an old 10 pump as accurate as the one I did when I was 10...

Beautiful Cooper Harmon. Any photo's of the 22 yet?

Charlie, that Marlin 39 couldn't be your youth rifle, its to new. whistle

Squirrel hunting was second favorite in my hunting line up. Fox being first. My favorite Squirrel rifles are first and foremost a KDF K22, a Sako Quad, and a custom 581/541. A Burris 6X AO Mini Compact scope was and still is my first choice. RWS Subsonic ammo is about all I use. Only head shots count. smile

Bowhunt, that lloks like a lot of fun. Is there a good spring type gun that you would recommend for 350 or so. I want to shoot birds a squirrels out of my fruit trees. I have a break style benjamin but the trigger sucks.

Sandy, they make triggers for air guns. Had one in my Titan. It broke like a glass rod and was light. They are only about 30 bucks IIRC?

Check out charliedatuna triggers.

Getfoxy, what brand of bipod is that? I'm not too familiar with
any of them, but finding a good set could come in handy for me.

We use Marader PCP .25 cal. with 6-20x50 scopes, over shooting sticks for the squirrels. It is a blast. Very quite.

Remington Nylon 66 is the one I use for hunting squirrels.
Here is an explanation why I prefer to use this one for hunting squirrels: Squirrel Hunting

This is my first squirrel hunt of the year and with a new gun for me. The gun is a Remington model 34, which was made back in the early 1930's. The bolt action no longer has its'ejector. The bolt retains thpe empty shell until I pick it off with my fingers. The guns bluing is worn thin from years of use. The stock is good for the guns age but has a few spots of white paint.
I rescued the old girl from my local pawn shop. The model 34really likes CCI CB Shorts. I was surprised that the iron sights were so easy for my old eyes to see. I have lots of guns, many of which would probably take more squirrels or atleast squirrels at a longer distance. However, this gun is a real time machine, it takes me back to when I was kid on the family farm. I entered the woods feeling as excited as a kid on his first hunt. The only squirrel that I found disappeared while I was slipping up on it and I scared off two deer.
So, no squirrel in the bag, no shots fired yet one of the best hunts in years. The old gun helped me recapture some of the youthful excitement that seemed to slip away over the years.

Thanks GC. I love old guns that show that they have had serious use. I don't mean abuse, rusty finger prints on the metal or cracked stocks. What I try to find are guns that look like they were well cared for but used by someone who had it in the field every chance they had. I call the worn bluing and scratched stocks as being honest wear. A gun with honest wear has many stories to tell and I am a good listener. I often sit in the woods and wonder how anyone could have parted with a gun who must of been such a good friend.

I appreciate the same type of firearm. Those guns worn nearly silver from honest use in the field are ones I'm attracted to also. I told my son that I will never leave him a pristine NIB anything. Everything I have gets used, cared for but well used. That equates to memories...

Really miss my 34. My grandma bought it for me when I was 11. My first gun. Accurate as all get out. I used to shoot dimes with it. Well our house burned down when I was 16 we lost everything. I have been looking for one for ever. When I find one I don't have the money. They are fine rifles

Marlin 25N .22lr with a 4x32. It will shoot quarter groups at 75 yards all day long with cci stingers, which is about the farthest shot I like to take on a squirrel. I could push it to 100 and hit the head most times, but if you miss and hit body it won't be a clean kill and I don't like that. Most squirrel shots are 50-75yd here.
