Green River Ripper handle material?

Have a ripper blade that I ruined the handle material while trying to work it. What is a good handle material to work for a man that doesn't have many wood working tools?

While not always the prettiest....Walnut is pretty sturdy and fairly easy to work....that's probably why it's used so much on knives and rifles.....
