Semi-auto ban DEAD?

The leader of the Democrat-controlled Senate on Tuesday dropped a proposed assault weapons ban from the chamber’s gun-control package – dealing a blow to supporters of the ban, though it could still come up for a vote.

The sponsor of the measure, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., revealed that Reid told her the proposed ban would not be in the initial package. Feinstein said she's "disappointed" with the decision, and is expected to nevertheless offer it as an amendment.

But the move by Reid to cut it from the main bill signals a lack of congressional support for a proposal that would not only revive, but strengthen, the decade-long ban that expired in 2004.

The proposed ban passed out of committee last week along with three other measures. The other three dealt with providing more school safety aid, expanding federal background checks on potential gun buyers and helping authorities prosecute illegal gun traffickers.

Feinstein has led the gun-control charge since President Obama called for federal legislation in the wake of the Newtown and other mass shootings.

it's pretty well recognized that it's highly unlikely to even pass in the senate & has no chance in the house.

“The enemies on this are very powerful. I've known that all my life,”Sen Feinstein

At what point did I or any other US CITIZEN become the ENEMY????? That statement alone should make people realize what she stands for(if they didn't already know).

"helping authorities prosecute illegal gun traffickers. "

now thats funny.haha they gonna prosecute our own government? how many guns have they "trafficked" to other countries?

Its not like they armed our enemys.

Just watch out for the "common sense compromise" of universal background checks. Who needs an AWB that would take some guns now, when you can have what will in effect be registration that could evntually take them all.

Assault weapons ban won't be in Dems' gun bill

WASHINGTON (AP) - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has decided that a proposed assault weapons ban won't be part of a gun control bill the Senate plans to debate next month, the sponsor of the ban said Tuesday, a decision that means the ban stands little chance of survival.

Instead, Sen. Dianne Feinstein said she will be able to offer her ban on the military-style firearms as an amendment. Feinstein is all but certain to need 60 votes from the 100-member Senate to prevail, but she faces solid Republican opposition and likely defections from some moderate Democrats.

"I very much regret it," Feinstein, D-Calif., told reporters of Reid's decision. "I tried my best."

Asked about the decision, Reid, D-Nev., said he wanted to bring a gun bill to the full Senate that would have enough support to overcome any GOP attempts to prevent debate from even starting.

He said that "using the most optimistic numbers," there were less than 40 votes for Feinstein's ban. That is far less than the 60 votes needed to begin considering legislation, and an indication that Reid feared that including the assault weapons ban in the main guns bill would risk getting the votes needed to begin debate.

"I'm not going to try to put something on the floor that won't succeed. I want something that will succeed. I think the worst of all worlds would be to bring to something to the floor and it dies there," Reid said.

Feinstein, an author of the 1994 assault weapons ban that expired after a decade, said that Reid told her of the decision on Monday.

There are 53 Democrats in the Senate, plus two independents who usually vote with them.

An assault-type weapon was used in the December massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., that revived gun control as a top issue in Washington. Banning those firearms was among the proposals President Barack Obama made in January in response to those slayings.

The assault weapons ban was the most controversial of the major proposals to restrict guns that have been advanced by Obama and Senate Democrats. Because of that, it had been expected that the assault weapons measure would be left out of the initial package the Senate considers, with Democrats hoping the Senate could therefore amass the strongest possible vote for the overall legislation.

Having a separate vote on assault weapons might free moderate Democratic senators facing re-election next year in Republican-leaning states to vote against the assault weapons measure, but then support the remaining overall package of gun curbs.

Gun control supporters consider a strong Senate vote important because the Republican-run House has shown little enthusiasm for most of Obama's proposals.

Feinstein said Reid told her there will be two votes.

One would be on her assault weapons ban, which also includes a ban on ammunition magazines that carry more than 10 rounds of ammunition. The second would just be on prohibiting the high-capacity magazine clips.

Many Democrats think the ban on large-capacity magazines has a better chance of getting 60 votes than the assault weapons ban.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved four gun control measures this month, including Feinstein's barring assault weapons and high capacity magazines. The others would expand required federal background checks for firearms buyers, increase federal penalties for illegal gun trafficking and boost school safety money.

Just to clarify though, the magazine capacity ban is still on the table, however. So we need to still get that shut down, as well as requirements for private party background checks.

We can take a deep breath, but we can't drop our guard. This fight is not over and may be just a rope A dope. Got to watch the counter attack and start working it as soon as possible. I say we push them. We gave more than enough money to defeat these bills and so fourth.Lets push them for more rights of we the people. They got to be punished for that crap they been trying. Lets take things from them that truly belong to us.

just because the coon tail rattler isn't buzzing doesn't mean he will not strike. I do not trust a dang thing they say or the press writes, they are all in the same den together and it it still stinks

Do not fall for the rope-a-dope. They are masters of illusion. They already had this planned with contingencies. If A fails, go to B. If B fails, go to C. That witch is always a threat to slip it back in some place else, just waiting for the perfect opportunity. They plan for decades, where we just plan for the weekend. We MUST be vigilante. We have a bad habit of being complacent. All we have done at this point is slowed their forward advancement, we have not stopped it, we have not knocked them on their heels at all. We need to sweep their legs out and step on their throat! This is not a game, we are in a fight for our rights, liberty, and our very survival! If you are wondering where to begin, start by educating yourself. Read what our founding fathers faced and what they did. They faced greater odds with far more at stake with far less resources than we have today! Once you educate yourself, then pass it on! Educate others, especially the young (kids, teens and young adults) and women. Your goal is not the person who has already made up their mind, but those that have no opinion, are on the fence and/or just don't know the facts. Don't allow lies to go unchallenged. When faced with facts and the truth, the anti's show their true colors, they are cowards at heart. We need to all stand together, or surely we will all hang separately!
