OK FOLKS
MIKE AND I TALKED
We are thinking about Feb 02
I am open all weekend. But Saturday seems the best if traveling far.
Anyone interested???
I know this is VERY SHORT NOTICE....
Plus it is not the same time frame as the Dark Boards hunt.
If people want motel rates and all I can get them for anyone who needs.
Now we were not thinking of cooking or anything like that.
But there are some good places to eat and we can set up places and time when we get a better idea as to how many will make it and all.
So lets hear it form you NOW....

Where at Kevin. Wickenberg I could probably do but way down south is a little far for me (no funds). I understand you cant please all the people all the time, only some of the people some of the time. And thats cool with me. Let me know where the plan of attack is going to be held at and I'll see if I can make it. Lance

OK, I'm interested but where are we going? and how far is it from San Diego?
I would like to do the week-end, as a long trip for a one day hunt dos not make much sense.
Onefoot & Mike, let me know if I can help you guys out in any way.

Details will be forthcoming. But, just so you guys can put a pin in your map, the hunt will begin in Benson. That's on Interstate 10, about 50 miles southeast of Tucson.
No extra curricular activities are scheduled at this time. Just a day of hunting. And it ought to be some fine hunting if the weather cooperates.
Stay tuned....Mike

Ok folks
Kevin Lukens /Joe and I went out north of Benson.
Man are there allot of coyotes out there.
Even with the full moon we still seen and heard many coyotes.
I will be posting more.
But one thing I will state for those that travel if you want to hunt Sunday too you are more than welcome to stay and hunt.
I and Mike will be posting a larger posting on where and when.
But I can tell you that there sai allot of great places that not many folks have hunted for years.
I will be posting more shortly..

Okay Guys, I see the natives are getting restless! Who ----- All registered Predator Masters members What ----- Predator Masters 2003 Mid-Winter Hunt When ---- Saturday, Feb. 01, 2003 (And Sunday iffen ya want) Where ----- Gas City, Benson, AZ The "Mid-Winter" hunt will commence from the parking lot of Gas City. Gas City is located at Exit 302, the intersection of I-10 and Arizona State Hwy 90. The exit signs will say Sierra Vista and Fort Huachuca. The exit is located on the west end of the town of Benson. Benson is approximately 40 miles SE of Tucson. We'll all meet at Gas City at 6:30 A.M. This place is a full service truck stop / store/ A&W root beer /pizza hut /etc. Located directly across the street is a KFC, Taco Bell, Subway, and McDonald's(gagggg!). Anyway, you can fill up your trucks and get a cup of joe in your blood to knock the last cobweb out of your eyes before it turns seriously daylight. We'll circle the wagons on the south end of the big lot that the tractor trailers park in. We'll pair up and hunt until noonish, meet back there for a midday meal/b.s. session, then pair up with somebody else and hit it til last light. The day's activities will be whatever you feel like doing. The following folks are familiar with the area and are planning on pairing up with the guys from other locales. There is plenty of prime coyote country available, so you probably won't run into anybody else you know during the day. Cochise County is the size of Rhode Island and Connecticut combined. Only 40% of the land is privately or corporately owned. But of course, some of the 'good" land is private. So goes it. Mike McDonald Kevin Bowler (Onefoot) Kevin Lukens If any other locals are available to guide, let us know. (Tiogan??) Some of the other southwest hunters will probably be comfortable enough to strike out on their own with just a quick map consultation. Anybody planning on staying over Saturday night to hunt on Sunday is more than welcome to do so. Onefoot and I will both be available to hunt on Sunday if guide type services are needed. As is always the case, there is no fee for anything at a PM hunt. Just good hunting and good times. If anybody is planning on staying at a motel during their stay, be advised.....Tucson is hosting the world's biggest Gem & Mineral Show during the period we are going to be hunting. That means if you want to book a room in Benson, you better do it soon. Rates will not be discounted during that time and they are going to be filled up in the next week or so. Sierra Vista is only 25 miles down the road, so you still have that lodging option if you need to exercise it. There should be plenty of rooms in S.V. Prices will probably be less in S.V. too. I checked on the rates at a few of the motels in Benson. All of these are 2 to 10 minutes from Gas City. I-10 Exit 302 Motels Holiday Inn Express 630 S. Village Loop - Benson 1-888-263-2283 $99.99 per night (some discounts are available, ask about them) Motel 6 637 S. Whetstone Commerce Dr. - Benson 1-520-586-0066 $72.95 tax included, single or double occupancy I-10 Exit 304 Ocatillo Dr. - BensonSuper 8 Motel 855 N.Ocotillo Rd - Benson 1-520-586-1530 www.super8.com$58.46 single incl. tax $67.30 double incl. tax Best Western Quail Hollow Inn - Benson 699 N. Ocotillo Rd 1-520-586-3646 Toll free - 1-800-322-1850 For Reservations Call 1-800-528-1234 Single - $71.86 Incl. tax Double $77.39 Incl. tax If anyone is planning on bringing a camper (Barefoot), I can put you up at my place, and Onefoot has extended the same offer. I have an acre and a fenced backyard with an RV gate. Power is available, just bring an extension cord and you will be set. The house (kitchen, bath, etc.) is, of course, open to you also. As I mentioned, Onefoot has also extended the same invitation for his place, so the choice is yours. (P.S. Onefoot has about 15 kids. ) We both live in the county, so it's not like you are are going to be camping on Main St. Terrain --- 3500 in the valleys to 10,000 ft mountains. Most areas will be mesquite mixed with yucca and grass lands. Mostly rolling hills with terrain getting more rugged as you approach mountain ranges. If you are a ladder shooter, there are plenty of areas that would lend themselves to those with that particular fetish Most roads are pretty good, and 4WD is not necessary for mere mortals. There is public land consisting of BLM, national forest and state trust land. Some private land, primarily ranch land, is accessible and clearly marked as such. Some private land is posted. Here is a link that will give you a general feel for the area. I think you will really like the area if you make it down for this hunt. Cochise County, Arizona Weather could be anything from 20 degrees with blowing snow, to 70 degrees and sunny. Dress accordingly. If there's anything I need to do, or if anybody needs additional details or assistance, just give me a shout at mmcdonald38XXX@yahoo.com (take out the XXX to send.) Here's a bold prediction for all of you that are vacillating about whether or not you are going to make it to the hunt. I PREDICT THAT THERE WILL BE MORE COYOTES PUT DOWN ON THE 1ST OF FEBRUARY THAN WERE SHOT AT LAST YEAR'S TOM MIX HUNT AND THIS YEAR'S GLOBE HUNT COMBINED! If you bust loose for one hunt this year, this is the one you want to make it to.

Guy's
I have to concur with Mike that there is allot of great hunting areas down here.
I know we will get allot more than the last Mix and Globe hunts.
Coyotes and bobcats abound in all areas.
So plan the date os the 1 Feb. 03 and if you can spend one more day for allot more fun.

All this talk of hunting has me fired up. If I hadn't drawn a javelina tag for NM (2/1-15/03), I'd be swinging over your way. Oh yeah, I'm expecting my first kid on Jan. 28th Can't forget that!!!

Hey Desertram, how's this for a teaser?
I rolled through the security check point at the East Gate of Fort Huachuca this morning on my way to work. My wife was looking out the passenger side window and says "Hey, check that out!" I looked over to see a big ol' javalina bumming scraps from one of the Tennessee National Guard or reservists that have been called up to active duty and are pulling security guard duty here.(Thank you, Tennessee!) The guard was standing about 3 ft above the javalina on a raised porch in front of the trailer they are using for an office tossing what looked to be bread.
Does the southwest rock, or what?!?

How far of a drive is that from New Mexico? That would be a good opportunity for me to hunt with some veterans (so long as you all don't mind a 16 year old). I have an F-150 set up to sleep me comfortably, so that would save me the $$$ on a hotel. Thanks fellas. bwb

Mike, that's just not fair! I bet they're not going to be that easy to find here in NM come Feb. 1. If all goes well though I'll be chasing them around anyway.

Hey, I just retired from Ft. Huachuca and have lived here since 95. The coyote hunting is great. If we meet in Benson where do we plan on hunting? I live in Hereford (south about 45 minutes). I see yotes every morning driving to work in Douglas. I have 5 acres and a RV dump on the homestead.

Allen We will be meeting at the Gas City on 90 and I10. I will be there about 0530 for I get up early all the time at Work on the base in Civ. Pay. We will give directions in the morning of the hunt to those that want to hunt around Benson. If not then we can head out to the variuos open range or ranches to hunt. Shoot me an email to civilianpay@hua.army.mil and I will explain more. Others can send email to me too if you want. I will be gone to DC next week so it might take me a few days to answer. See you on the hunt...

Welcome aboard Allen. You can hunt anywhere your heart desires. The whole point of hunts like this is to get some of the guys from the board together for a day of hunting so we get to know who we're lieing to when we post whoppers on here.
Oh yeah, and introducing some of the guys from far afield to the area without them being totally clueless about where to go hunting. We do that by pairing up the local yokels with out of towners, then scattering to all points of the compass.
Looking forward to meeting you at the hunt. If you could pair up with a hunter unfamiliar with the area, that would be a good thing.
Mike

Hey Guys, New to the PM Forums, Like what I have read so far! I would love to participate in your hunt but I have a hog hunt scheduled Feb 6-8. Any chance you will be doing another hunt in the same area say March or April? I have hunted in several areas of AZ but never down where you guys will be.
Good Luck

SoCalHunter, I like to give the coyotes a break so they can raise next years targets during that time frame. They're getting pretty ratty looking in the fur department by then too.

For those of us coming from out of state do we need a license of some sort? If so, what kind of license and how much does it cost? Is there somewhere in Benson that we can pick one up? I looked on Arizona Game and Fish website and couldn't find anything on predator (coyote) hunting.Look foward to seeing everyone there.

Non-resident general hunting licenses for Arizona are $113.50. That will cover all predators. For cougars you'll need a $10.00 tag.

SWNMHUNTER,
Part of what TONT T said is correct. An annual non-resident hunting licence, Class G, is $113.50. However a 3 day non-resident hunting license, Class H, is $51.50, a little easier on the pocket book and good for predators. However a non-resident lion tag is $183.00. I hope this clarifies things a bit.
In looking a little closer the water gets a little mirkey. The Class H is not valid for big game which the lion is classified so maybe, I'm not sure, you may have to buy the Class G license to take lion. I don't know where you would be able to get these in Benson, sorry. Call AG&FD 602-942-3000 for clarification.
Bill

Hi all FWIW my brother (Wild Bill)and I will be at the doings in Benson. I had some surgery on my foot scheduled for the middle of Jan but the Dr rescheduled it for the middle of Feb ( too bad I get to go hunting for coyotes in Arizona again). One question... is HornetFan from Globe going to be at the doings? If you read this Jeff, EMail me a quick note. Bill and I would like to hookup with you again for some yak, yak, yak and maybe some coyote blasting. I promise you won't have to do all the calling this time and my 6mm has been trained to hit what it's pointed at since last hunt.

Huachuca and work in the Sierra Vista Mall (Army Recruiter)<does that explain the no time part? Would like to go on the one in Feb.

You fellas are in for a treat.Hunting has been great around the Benson area, Cascabel rd. north out of Pomerene has been good along river. The closer you get to Wilcox, action thins out.head towards Winkleman and Reddington pass area, been hot for cats too. A sleeper spot may be north towards happy valley, some good tracts of state trust land near foot of rincons, I hammered them couple days ago there, great spot.

ChileRojo, It's funny you mentioned that Road I was just out their looking around for a new hunting spot. All along the river where I wanted to hunt was all private property. Are you hunting on private land or are you just not going down by the river.

Come on out to the hunt you will be more than welcome...
You can contact me at my email address or call civilian pay on base....
Dogonner have not heard from Hornet. Hope to still hear and see you at the hunt.
Destoyer I belive that he might be talking about the east side of the river...
but I could be mistaken too....
I know that there is allot of dogs and cats out there to the north of Benson...
Should be great hunting. Be even better if it would cool off a bit too...
See you all at the hunt....

Stay to the east of the river destroyer. In fact, a drive up tres alamos wash if you have a 4x4 is some very productive calling area too. Three Links road till you hit the powerline is also fair for coyotes, all that country that is packed with pickly pear is super calling. Some of the local ranches are putting out poison this time of year to hammer the coyotes before calving so area past powerline is not to hot this time of year for calling. Head towards san manuel up cascabel though, and keep hitting the pockets to east of river you'll do good.

Hi, everyone, I would like to get in on this hunt. I know a little about that area when I was a GI stationed there about 10 years ago. Not sure if I would be much use as a guide since it has been so long. If any of you keep the pelts I will be happy to donate any coyotes I get.

SE of the hot springs puts you right in the tres alamos wash area.....good calling around there. Any of the country around johnny lyons hills are cat magnets and some grey fox too. Sybil road behind Stuckys is a good turn to take also, although more and more land being gobbled up by private development as we all know.

DANG! I wish I lived a little closer! I've been interested in a similar type hunt closer to me, but unfortunately 95% of Texas is privately owned so this type of hunt is a lot harder to pull off. I did get to meet up with a PM member last week for a hunt and scored on one coyote. One of these days if funds (and wife) allow, I would like to attend one of these hunts. Kill a few for me, and post plenty of pictures so the rest of of can live vicarioulsy through ya'll.

Crapshoot, If you had ever been in the boy scouts you would know that 1400 is when the sun is out and the little hand is on the 2 and the big hand is on the 12. Pup just arrived and got his license at Wally WOrld a few minutes ago. See you when you get here.

Thanks for a good time. I kind of lost touch with you guys after Mike kidnapped me and took me to Bowie. That boy can blow a call. Any way how did you guys fair today? We went up through San Manuel but between the wind and the no trespassing signs we gave up and went on home. Thanks again, Tony.

Crapshoot,
Well Mike45 and I saw the 3 dogs in the AM on the 1st stand that hung up at 500 yards with no shot and 10 mule deer on the 3rd stand, the rest of the day and afternoon were, spent taking the guns for a walk, they needed the exercise. Mike45 thanks for showing me how to use that open reed call, sorry we couldn't find more to hunt but I had a great time walking the guns with you. We only hunted Saturday. How did the rest of you make out?

First off I've got to send a big thank you to Onefoot and Mike McDonald. They were gracious hostes. One foot especially took a big step forward with written instructions on the hows and wheres to hunt most of the southern end of Arizona. Thank you fellas.
I was only able to hunt on Saturday but was glad to thave that oppertunity. First thing in the morning I teamed up with Dogonner and Wild Bill. We went up to Mescal and hunted along the Rail Road tracks back to the east until we got to Benson again. The coyotes were very vocal, barking and howling on almost every stand. They were laughing at us is what they were doing. THere was only one coyote called when I was with Doggonner and Wild Bill. We were set up in a lazy triangle and this sneaky devil coyote actually ran right through the middle of the triangle. No shot was offered but we did call one. We took a liesurely pace until we got near the Benson airport and Bill and Dennis found that they had rather urgent internal needs that only a proper bathroom could take care of. And this is where the story takes a different turn. Just west of the airport the country absolutely screamed "COYOTE" at me I flagged the brothers Bill and Dennis down (they were in their own vehicle following me.) and attempted to get them to do just one more stand. But their urgency had increased to the point that there was absolutely no way that they could wait so I bid them ado and proceeded to set the stand myself. Things weren't oting as smoothly as I'd hoped. The ground sort of broke up into little washes and the tree wouldn't give my ladder a comfortable fool hold (tilted an soft under one foot). So I simply moved it out into the wide open and climbed aboard. The first scream sounded good and I could tell that the sound was carrying well. The second scream was one of those worbling desperate affairs, the third producted a coyote. I saw it at mid scream running along one of the little washes in front and to the right. It disappeared into a wash, I got ready, it popped out at about 25 yards and I took it at about 20 yards. Cool ............ I wandered back to the truck did another blank but interesting stand and headed back to the gathering location.
I was very surprised to find out that nobody else had taken a coyote yet. ..... Well we stood around and talked callin' for a while. But the hunter in me got the best of me so I corraled a couple of willing callers tonlocus and partner Kirk(Thanks Tony) and sprinted down to Bowie for a few stands. I was so focused on getting going that I darned near did some serious body work on my truck, not once but twice before I got onto the interstate. We did not call a darned thing but I had a very good time with these two fellas. Tonlocus likes a good debate and his partner is more the quiet type, both with good sences of humor and an excellent grasp of who they are.

I spent the day hunting w/ Onefoot. We had a great time. We started out the morning w/ a great calling ratio. 2 coyotes called in 3 stands.
The first one we called in right behind some cattle. Onefoot was off to my left about 10 yds w/ his 22 Hornet, and I was packing the 12ga Mossberg. Onefoot started the stand w/ a howl and then I picked up the distress calls. About 3-4 min in there's a coyote standing about 65 yds at my 10 o'clock. Onefoot got the hairs on him and pulled the trigger, nothing. Mr coyote heard the safety come off and started to turn. Then I made the rookie mistake of not barking to try and stop him, but I instead stood up to get a shot over the prickly pear cactus I was behind. That's when I realized he was outside my comfort zone w/ the 12ga.
The next one we set up Onefoot's AZDEN remote ecaller and let it do the work. Dang, I like that setup. About 10min into our stand I hear a "Bang! SH*T,SH*T,SH*T!!!" Needless to say, I think he missed, so I start doing a few coyote distress hoping he may get a second chance or another victim. Well I came to find out after the stand that the ridge on which our furry friend offered a perfect broadside shot, was quite a bit further than it looked. Onefoot held over for about a 200 yd shot and ended up kicking up dirt 8" or so below our now very scared coyote. Apparently that 22 Hornet drops dramatically when trying 300yd shots.. hehe.. The rest of the day was spent w/ his 22-250 in hand.
Unfortunatly, we didn't have any other takers the rest of the day until our last stand. After a 20min stand w/ nothing happening, I popped the reed from my AP8 in my mouth and started some kitten mews. Kevin told me after the stand that 2 sets of fox ears popped up out of the tall grass we were calling in, but just wouldn't move any closer, and eventually disappeared.
It was wonderful weather, a little warm at times but managable for those of us used to calling in the desert heat. Great company, we got to meet up w/ quite a few members who were unable to make it to the globe hunt as well as some familiar faces.
I'd like to thank Mike McD. and Onefoot for the planning of this little shin-dig as well as Onefoot's company and expertise in the field. He's a great guy and I look forward to my next visit to the in-laws down there so I can hook up w/ him again.

A big thanks to Onefoot and Mike McDonald for hosting this shindig. We went out Sat morning with Michael J. He did some fine calling on several stands but with no action other than those dogs laughing at us from just one more ridge down. Had one sneak through us in some heavy ground cover with just a flash or two of ears and head. Dennis and I had to answer mother natures call around noon time so missed Michaels next stand. We went out Sunday morning with Onefoot and found some great stands but the WIND got the best of the deal. Saw a great looking mule deer buck with a couple of does that got Onefoots attention. Overall we had an enjoyable trip and really liked seeing some old friends and make a few new ones. On the trip home we stopped in T or C to play some golf, during the round had more Coyote action than the rest of the weekend. We saw two rather well fed dogs taking a leisurely stroll along the fairways. Will keep in touch with the chat and look forward to the next hunt. Wild Bill and Doggoner.
