Actually since before the Predator Masters board existed (January 2000) we've held a January/February based gathering/hunt at a little out of the way spot called the Tom Mix Monument (located at the spot where the very popular movie actor Tom Mix was found dead after a car accident) and it became known as the Tom Mix hunt. This has been a perfect gathering spot but has not provided the quality hunt that I would like. This year we've been kicking around a location for the next Tom Mix Hunt. Right now we are heavily considering a hunt in Wickenburg Arizona. Since I'm sure that Tom Mix has at least passed thru Wickenburg it this hunt will still be refered to as the Tom Mix Hunt.

Well what do you folks think. Are you interested? Should we go ahead with plans?

Interested!!! But i'm cashing in my kitchen passes for what little time i can scrape together for Archery Javelina in January. Now, i could run into some stupid pigs opening weekend and be good to go in January, but i'd prefer February.

i know that runs into February gun seasons on javelina, though, so i can appreciate the January timeframe for most folks.

I do not recommend the Wickenburg area as predator densities are quite low there (heh! heh!) And by the way! Which one of you has been calling my stands? I saw your footprints, I hate that.

May I recommend Cochise county?

We have plenty of public land available.i.e. state trust land,BLM, Coronado National Forest.

Some of the big ranches Sands Ranch, Cowen Ranch, allow unrestricted hunting. Just mind your manners and close the gates and don't shoot the cattle.

Ft Huachuaca is available if you are military or federal civil service and don't mind the b.s. involved with the military. (I do.)

Terrain is everything from valley bottom mesqite and grease wood to oak and pine covered mountains. Some grasslands and everything in between. Something for every taste.Plenty of GOOD hunting country.

Lots of coyotes and respectable bobcat populations. Mountain lion populations are also pretty healthy. Plenty of sign and lots of deer for them to eat. Foxes are in the hilly areas.

The eastern edge of the county is also the state boundry with New Mexico. I understand that N.M. doesn't even require a license to hunt coyotes, but I can't confirm that. If that assumption is accurate, you have that much more land to hunt!

Sierra Vista is the biggest town at about 40,000.
Motels are available in towns such as S.V., Benson, Bisbee, Wilcox, etc.
I-10 runs through the county from east to west, so if you were to get a motel on the interstate you could reach just about anyplace in the county within about 1.5 hours.

Here's a pic of what we bagged this afternoon. This was in areas that Onefoot and I hunted just yesterday and got skunked. Sorry Kevin The bobcat we got just off of a gas line road at about 4 pm and the coyote was taken at 2:30 pm from a stand a couple hundred yards from a state highway.

I am not saying everyday results in a boat load of critters, but they're there. We get skunked here just like every place else.

Afterthought...
Here's the game I saw this weekend.
Coyote 3
Bobcat 1
Javilena (HUGE!!!) 1
Coues Whitetail 3 (All bucks)
Grey fox (Fresh road kill)
Mountain Lion (Calm down, pup, it was Fresh track only, not a Kodak moment )

Mike,
Thats a nice picture you got there, I was out on Ft H yesterday morning and called didn't see a thing, I agree Cochise has a great deal of land to hunt, Jan would be a great time for this as I got the Feb javelina season.

New Mexico does require a license for coyotes for non-residents. If you venture over to this side, don't forget your Habitat Improvement (gate building) Stamp.

Residents only need the HIS - no license.

I had a nice accurate post all typed out but was pulled away this morning about this very issue. The Coyote Gods will be having there annual Get together January 23th-25rd. Out of respect for them I don't think that it would be appropriate to hold the hunt in their hunt area. I've got some plusses and minuses for Wickenburg but I gotta go, I'll flesh this out tomorrow.

Non-residents hunting in New Mexico must have any valid NM hunting license, or a non-resident non-game license. All hunters must have the habitat improvement stamp when hunting on federal lands. It gets more involved to take possessin of the animals and for protected fur bearers as well.

Closer to which meeting place is the question.

I've got no problem with "Show up in "x" parking lot at 6am and we'll go from there."

Did we ever decide on which area we wanted to hunt?

Since a heart attack and open-heart surgery prevented me from attending the PM Hunt, I would really like to make this one. I hunted the Wickenburg area back in 1969/70 and recall that it was pretty good hunting.

I am in the San Diego area, but would be interested in helping out in the putting together department, just let me know what I can do.

Hey Scott. Welcome to PM... ( I recognize you )

Hopefully Michael can pull this together afterall... you just missed the big PM Annual get-together in Globe, AZ we had last month.

Hey Mike McDonald (and SE AZ crew):

If youre up for throwing this shindig-together down in your neck of the cactus then go for it, PLEASE.

If something is gonna happen, ya'll need to nail it down quick or else the turnout will be very low. You can figure that 1/2 the people that say they are "for sure" going to show up... won't.
