...And shot some yotes inbetween the PM and CG hunts.
Per requests, this is how it played out. Sunday after the banquet, Lochi approached me about the possibility of letting him come hunting with me on the res. This was more than an honor. I lent him my Ruger 77, in 243, as it was the lighter of the two rifles I brought.
We got an early start, and drove to the Northeast corner of the res on Monday. We figured to put some distance between us and the western side, a Lot of calls had been played to the dogs over there, and they were sort of in shell-shock, according to my theory.
So we were driving along the little trail, and there was this big Arizona coyote just standing in the middle of a plains like surroundings. We drove past, Lochi took the wheel, I grabbed My Beloved Browning out of its case, and thumbed some handloads into it. We slowly drove back to where we had seen the coyote, I stepped out of the truck and Lochi went on driving the coyote watched intently as the truck drove away, and when he looked back OOPS...There Was Tackdriver. The Browning made a loud noise and the coyote fell down. That was the only coytoe of that day.
The next day we went out and hunted on the Middle-Western area of the res a little bit. Lochi and I made a good stand, and Lochi called in a fox, but we were positioned on opposite sides of the hill, the fox ran around behind Lochi, and since I was well camoed, he could not see me. So he had to pass. In retrospect, it would have been no worse than a "Craig Hamilton Wake-Up Call" but I commend Lochi's restraint.
Later that morning on another stand, Lochi and I were back to back on a mesquite stand, And lochi and I did a duet on our mouth calls, and a pair of coyotes appeared. Lochi was able to get the one that appeard near him, it was a fine specimen, the other one, I never had a shot, too much mesquite and it was on my "weak side" anyway. This coyote could have gone to the shop. But Lochi settled for the tail. Two coyotes were slain via my 243, one coyote, the one I killed with Craig, had a 4 inch exit, this one had no exit. Nosler 70 grains, and a dose of Varget to get them in the air. I guess this load depends on the presence of bone to a high degree to damage a pelt.
That night I ran some errands, when I got to the hotel room, Lochi was there, and he told em that Bruce Kennedy from the CG board had called. The Bad news, We had to sleep 4 hours and start for Tuscon. The Good news, Bruce was gonna show us some of his honey holes for bobcat. Not a thing for the hunting that day, but not for lack of trying. Although Bruce did call in a coyote on the second to the last stand, it disappeared in some cacti and mesquite, never to re-appear.
The next day, we got up and headed for Wilcox, sort of a busy day, no hunting but a good BS session at JH's house. It was here that I learned to case skin and flesh a coyote. Looks like I am gonna have to invest in some of the tools needed to prep fur, now that I have a newly discovered skill. Their faces are hard. Some of the guys said there were special tools to do the faces really nice, but JH did not have those, if somebody would tell me what they look like or post some pics of them, that would be appreciated.
On Friday, the first day of the CG hunt, Bruce Lochi and I redeemed ourselves, by bagging a nice coyote. I had the JS playing Baby Red Fox in Distress as I have long thougt that the rabbit/jackrabbit sounds get more than their share of airplay from the JS repretore and I wanted to mix it up a little. Bruce had his JS, on a remote playing a Coy Wolf howl every so often, and Lochi was making good sounds on his mouth call. In rushes a coyote, Lochi fires, almost simultaniously with Bruce, and the coyote fell over. It was this kill that showed me the need for a kill gun. Bruce finished it with a round from his 22-250, had it not been for that, the pelt would have been a nice ornament.
Well that is the deets of what happened between the PM and CG hunts, was a great time, I surely enjoyed all the time spent in Arizona. I love it there.
