I call them tassel-eared squirrels, biologist call them Abert's. I live on the US/Mexico border so we have to travel to northern Arizona to shoot them. About a seven hour trip for me so we only go once or twice a year. You can find them in northern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, extreme southeastern Utah and south central Colorado. Also in the Sierra Madre mountains of northern Mexico.

I've seen them around Delores, Co in the early 80's when working on McPhee Dam. I've also seen them all black with the tuffed ears around the 4 corners area.
