Stopped testing, .25DTI too slow with 100grainers. Abandoned in favor of 90gr Sierras for deer load.

KnockEm, stats on that deer and distance of shot? That's a fine deer for NY. My family has hunted Western NY all my/their life and only ever shot a couple that even could be talked about in the same conversation as that one.


The results for the 90gr Gamekings are promising, anyone tried a flat based bullet in that weight range? Only one that comes to mind is the 87gr Speer Hot-Cor. Curious if anyones gotten them over 3000 fps.

NOTES: You can use the Sierra 100 grain prohunter with the same OAL. Velocity will be slighly less due to more bearing surface of the bullet.

My bullet of choice is the Swift 100 grain A-Frame. Seated to 2.3 inches the velocity was about 2750 fps. Very accurate.

All other 100 grain bullets need to be seated deep in the case and the powder charges adjusted accordingly. The seating depths of the bullets I mentioned above are all about the same.

CAUTION: The port pressure on a mid-length barrel setup will be higher than most other powders (using the leverevolution). I used a Tubbs buffer system to slow up the unlocking time and eliminated any swipes that I had. I am considering installing a MGI adjustable gas tube. Also, my buffer weighs 5.0 oz (carbine)

With all of the test-firing I do around the shop, I pick up blems and close-outs whenever I can. Back a few years ago, Midway had a deal on .257 Cal. 90 Grain hollow-point flat-base bullets. They were made for Federal to use in their "Federal Premium" ammunition. I picked up 500 of them or so to use for testing the .25 WSSM's, but when I came out with the .25 DTI, they became pure magic! They are not only VERY accurate, but they are short enough to get me 3000 FPS out of an 18" barrel! As you load for rifles where magazine length is your COL deciding factor, you will quickly see what short bullets will do for you.

The first deer killed in the world with a .25 DTI was taken with that bullet. If you ever see them available, pick up as many of them as you can!

Thanks for the reply Mike. I recall you mentioning this. I was wondering if anyone had similar luck with a more readily available bullet. Seems like it would be very doable.

While I was working with different bullets for the .25 DTI, I noticed something interesting. If you compare the Sierra 100 grain spitzer to the 90 grain HP flat-base, they are identical but for 10 grains and the little lead point. It's surprising how much that little added length costs you...

Mike -- although I found that the bullet seating depth (amount of bullet in the case) is nearly the same for both bullets. The 90 grain gameking is 2.19 OAL and the 100 grain gameking is 2.26. That .07 inches as you say is the lead tip. I sure would like to be able to seat those 90 grain pills to 2.30 inches.

I have quite a bit of 6mmDTi data so I may add a little here and there.My typing ability is dismal so this takes me a while. My Dtech has a 22 inch barrel with a 1/12 Twist.
