The state argued that hunting helps manage the animal population and
raises several million dollars a year from the sale of hunting and
fishing licenses.

The state also argued that the law increases public safety by reducing
contact between activists and hunters who are about to fire guns and
bows, as well as reducing the number of collisions between cars and
deer.

California Legislature Introduces Ammunition Tax Legislation

Law-abiding sportsmen might soon be taxed to pay for the medical
expenses of victims of illegal firearms activity in California.

California's Senate Constitutional Amendment 12 (SA 12) would impose an
additional sales tax of five cents on every piece of ammunition sold in
the state after Jan. 1, 2003. The tax would finance a trauma center fund
to compensate the unpaid medical bills accrued by victims of illegal
firearms activity.

The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance (USSA) and California Waterfowl
Association believe that SA 12 would unjustly tax sportsmen and sport
shooters who obey gun regulations and promote the safe handling of
firearms. They say that making sportsmen pay for problems caused by
urban criminals is intolerable.

California sportsmen: Contact your senator and encourage him to oppose
SA 12. To find the name of your senator, call (916) 445-4251, or visit
the USSA's Web site at www.ussportsmen.org and click on the "Legislative
Action Center" link near the bottom of the page.
