it can be below freezing at night with daytime highs in the 60s. or it can be colder.

last year an unusual super cold front went through & froze the entire SW the week before the hunt, it moved out about that tuesday I think. One day just got comepletely blown out by a wind storm.

It pays to be flexible & have layers, as well as to watch the forecast closely in the days before going.

It's all relative I suppose.

Cool is lows in 20s with daytime highs in 50s.

Cold is single digits to teens with daytime highs in the 30s - 40s.

As Stu mentioned, last year right before the hunt we had a real cold snap with several days of subzero temps. That's odd for us though. Be ready for single digits to 60s, with winds up to 30mph+. Wind is more often a problem than cold temps. Calling in 30mph blowing dust isn't a whole lot of fun IMO.

Here's a decent website to see average weather.

The cool temps sound decent enough.
Guess I better pay attention ahead of time so I know about
what kind of clothing to bring. If I get it wrong, I can
always pick up something while down there.

Over here on the other side of the Sacramentos, we've already been down to single digits. We've been more steady with lows in the 20's-30's and highs in the 40's-60's, though.

They're calling for snow again this weekend, but back to the high 50's by later next week. That deep into winter, just about anything's possible.

Also remember that 'Cruces sits in a valley at about 3400 feet elevation. You can drive as little as an hour in some directions and be in sure'nuff mountains at close to 10,000 feet elevation. There'll be a huge difference in conditions with changing elevation.

Good point! The weather in Cruces may not even resemble the weather you can encounter by driving a relatively short distance. We hit mid-50s yesterday, but I can still see plenty of snow on the hills to the west and north of us.

If you're planning to travel a ways to call, you'll want to be prepared for even cooler temps and precipitation - some of it frozen even. smile

It can be below freezing and a snow storm a 100 miles away, and in Las Cruces you be sitting outside with short sleeves. Generally look for a high about 50 in the afternoons and cold at night. But extremes changes can happen within an hour.

I was driving to AZ from Lubbock a few weeks ago and a hard snow hit as I was driving thru Las Cruces. They shut down I-10 over night until about 11 the next day. Lots of wrecks. I was lucky to get off the highway and get a motel.

For those of us that don't live near or frequent the mountain ranges during the Winters on a normal basis is the reason I posted the weather site initially..It would be a good idea to check it right before leaving home..

The last two years, the weather during the dates of the Hunt were great, but you have to be aware that in that locale, things can change is a heartbeat, or a few miles, whichever comes first..

Some of the guys started off in the mornings looking somewhat like the Michelin Man and would come back in about noon in jeans and long sleeved shirt..
