A New Brunswick deer farmer killed by a deer on Sunday has been identified as 55-year-old Donald Dube.

RCMP officers discovered Dube's body in a fenced field behind his home in Saint-Léonard on Sunday evening.

He had multiple antler wounds and died of his injuries.

Dube's wife phoned police Sunday afternoon after he went out to feed the deer and never returned. Dube had kept deer in the pen for nearly 10 years, feeding them daily.

RCMP Sgt. Marc Violette said a buck viciously attacked Dube.

"There's a dominant male deer in the herd and it was obvious signs of a struggle. Even I could describe that the victim was moved around a bit like a rag doll," he said.

The Department of Natural Resources is investigating why the animal attacked. A spokesman said such an attack is nearly unheard of.

The male deer may have felt threatened, and attacked Dube with its antlers and hooves.

It's not known whether Dube had a permit to keep the animals, as required by provincial law.

The entire herd of about a dozen deer has now been euthanized, at the request of the Dube family.

Sad affair, but it's just another case solidifying where it's not wise to try and keep a normally wild animal as a somewhat 'pet'...even if they are being raised for sale or re-stocking purposes...
