i bought a .223 thompson venture from cabelas.

i got it with a cabelas 6-18 scope but i dont like it. it was $140.00

i'm hoping to trade it in on either a 3x9 or 4x12

i'm going to mostly use it for varmints and coyotes.

up to 300 yards i'm guessing.

what do you guys suggest for me? i'd be ok with spending $250??

i'm thinking i like the standard duplex. leaning toward a 4x12

also any comments on the gun. i dont really know much about rifles.

I would recommend taking a look at the Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40. For just over $200.00, they are a great scope and you will not find anything much better.

All the above are great choices in you given price range. For another $50, you can get into the leupy VXII glass. I dont know if your willing to spend more, but i cannot say enough good about the conquest line. I have a 3x9x40 on one of my rifles ($400) and to be honest, the glass is just as clear and bright as my leupy MK4 6.5x20x50. Also the eye relief stays the same throughout te entire magnification range.

cautious about spending more than $250-$300. i'm not planning on using it for deer or out of state hunting. (needing expensive reliable)

this is not a $600-$700 remington needing a $600 zeiss scope. its more of a starter rifle.

i think i'm kinda stuck going with cabelas store, not their scopes, since i should have a $140 credit for a scope.

again trying to decide which power i want to stay between the 3-12 power. anything higher power and i sacrifice too much clarity.

I was not impressed with the Redfields at all when I looked at them. I would point you towards the Nikon buckmaster series. They are in the price range and are decent scopes.

I have a Simmons Pro hunter I got from Midway. Under 100 bucks and good clarity and accuracy, holds zero well. I'm not afraid to rough it up in the field. I've had good luck with simmons scope as long as the recoil is low like with an AR.

I bought the Sps package, did away with the remington scope and got the Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14x40 with nikoplex recticle.
I couldnt be more pleased for what I spent.
I posted in photos titled sps/buckmasters and in optics under sps/buckmasters results.
A member here has a nice used buckmasters like mine for sale.

cabelas alaskan series looks interesting.

its $269 for the 4x12.

keep the ideas ooming i might be running down there tomorrow.

Just too many choices. haha

i'd like the low light clarity if i want to do some coyote hunting closer to dusk and i'd like the higher power for sniping. not sure yet what i'll do more of.

maybe i should just get a 3x9 and be done with it

Hi Grass,
yeah there are lots of choices!! honestly I think you would be very happy with what 2muchgun said: Weaver Classic. I have several myself and keep buying them. Affordable and well made. All of mine are on .223's. No problems at all.
