Will there be maps of the area available, or can they be purchased in town?
Was thinking of ordering BLM maps but wanted to check prior to ordering.
Thanks
Ken

I have official BLM maps and the one Bear shows and they're both just about as good. I looked online for BLM maps and came up blank.

Maps showing surface ownership (and some topography) can also be bought at the local BLM office for $4 each. They're open weekdays from 8-4:30 PM.

Yes, there will be maps avl. at the Hunt, but those New Mexico Recreation maps are great for showing BLM lands too, so, if you get a chance to pick one up, do so. They cover the whole state.

I know they sell those at Sprotsmans & cabelas too.

Thanks for the help all.
Rick- If yours is missing out of your truck, dont look at me.
I found out that theres a BLM office in Las Cruces. I will pick some up.
I found an index to buy them on line under www.publiclands.org if anyone is interested in ordering. FYI.

You actually need to get out and away from Alamogordo a good bit for decent calling.

Lovington is in Eastern NM, and a lot of the land there is private. Not near as much BLM, and what is there, may be "sheep country" that has lots of ADC work done on it.

Whitesands is closed to the public. Expecially for hunting.

The Mescaleros don't really allow predator hunting that I know of.

In my opinion, you need to be looking West, South, and NW of Las Cruces. There's so much great calling land out that way, that you couldn't call it all in a year. thumbup1

Speaking of Mexico, what's it like SW of Las Cruces? It's been 25 years since I've really been down there. Are we going to run into drug runners, "coyotes", and other riff-raff?

I'm not real sure which way I'm going to head...will wait until I've talked around a bit.

There are wolves in the Gila, so be careful there.

Check this out:

I talked to Border Patrol. There's not much activity down there right now. All efforts are concentrated on the border, and that's where most of the trouble stops.

It's great calling down there, but you may be checked by border patrol.

Rick, While I may get out for a few spots, I'll be looking forward to seeing everyone...

I've been "Pumped Up" for this one since last July, when they announced the location...It's been a couple of years since I was down in Las Cruces on other business, but I thought at the time, I sure would love to spend a couple of days in the area....just prowling the back roads..

If you have a Garmin or Lowrance GPS, pick up NMTRAX from http://www.koutdoorproducts.com. It is BLM map on steroids right on your GPS. Paper maps can be nice but when you are quickly scouting or looking for where a property or boundary edge is, there is nothing better, faster, or more accurate.

You will not be sorry. There still is enough time to get your map before the convention but you need to order soon.

I have an old Garmin 12XL, I doubt that it can use the maps. I checked it today & found that the batteries corroded, dunno if it can be salvaged of not.

It's a handheld unit & quite primitive compared to what we can buy now, but it sucks to have it hosed like that.

Stu, unfortunately, no the Garmin 12XL did not accept maps. All the Garmin Nuvis do and any of the handhelds that have an x at the end such as Legend HCx, Vista, HCx, 60CSx, 76CSx, etc in their name as well as the Oregon and Colorado series. For Lowrance, pretty much all of them accept map memory cards.

These maps are nothing short of amazing. Once someone uses one, they will wonder how they hunted without one.

I am assuming you are talking about Kirsch's product. I use the 205W and it works great. It will work on your 255 also. It comes with the micro SD card and adapter so you can use it in any of the Garmins that accept cards. I use them in my Etrex's also.

I bought mine online and I got a 4 day license and the Habitat Stamp and the Habitat Management and Access validation which if I understand it correctly allows you to hunt coyotes the remainder of the 2011 season. It was 46.95.

That is correct... March 2011 is the end of this current season but I am fairly certain that a 4 day license allows coyotes until March due to the fact that any hunting license purchase allows coyote huntin the remainder of that current license year. I hunted one year on my archery elk license.
