Scope , Rifle question

I just bought a bushnell scope for my older savage .22. It came with the rings. I was going to go buy a base until i sat the scope on the gun, just to see what it looked like and noticed grooves machined in the barrel right where the scope should be. So i put the scope on and tightened it down.It is very solid, a perfect fit. My question is , is the grooves a base for a scope,it seems like a perfect fit. Ive never really mounted a scope on a .22 so i didnt know if it was normal, or do i still need to buy a base for the scope.

Try different ammo, it seems that each .22 rifle likes different loads. My rifles, one like Winchester hollow point with the copper coating, other one likes Federal Eagle, one likes a target load, and on.
