Any dates or details for the 2010 hunt? I'm reading about the 2009 hunt, and it's getting me real interested in attending, but I need to start saving $$ and convincing my wife ASAP.

We are working on it now.

We are also looking at moving the hunt this year. We will have the dates and location by the 10th of May.

There has already been much work done on the scouting for hunt areas and accommodations.

The sooner you know a date, the better Jim. I need to mark it in my schedule to ensure I don't book a hunt this year...like I did last year.

PM me if you have some unannounced dates.

So, your finally going to move the hunt out of Will Craigs home town. It's been talked about for years, probably not a bad move, it should freshen the hunt up some and bring some return interest from those that have been to Globe a few to many times already. A new place for the hunt could be sorta cool ... and it will guarentee that I won't be attending, not because I have a problem with PM, it's a money problem and I'm not allowed to have a traveling vacation like the rest of the family has ... two birds, one stone,

MJM- a lot had to do with the lack of cooperation that we got from the rez for year to year. They act like they never heard of us and we've been coming there for how many years?

I agree that it might generate some renewed interest, and allow some of those people that are in a similar situation as yourself to attend. Not everyone is a couple of hours from Globe. No matter where it is, somebody is going to have to travel to get there.

I attended my first PM hunt this year and had a good time. It was nice to meet everyone and be able to put a face to a screen name. The Banquet and the Egg shoot was outstanding and all the dinners and getting to hunt with different guys was great but the Hunting was Lousy. The Coyotes on the Rez have been pounded, trapped, Gunned from the Air and Lord knows what else.
If this is going to just be a get together then lets all meet in Las Vegas. If I'm going to Fly 2000 miles then I want to go somewhere where the Hunting's a lot better.
Just my 2 Cents worth.

And we hear you Bcbuck.
There are several reasons for the change of venue, and you have hit on one of them. Stay tuned, we will have soem updates over the next few weeks.

Since your makeing changes why not hold the hunt in a better time of year, coyote wise, in say September, October or November?

We have thought about a fall hunt, but so many people are hunting big game then.

We likely will move it from Feb to Jan though, so the guys won't be in trouble for being away on valentine's day.

The long and short is the date and location will never suit everyone.

So is the focus towards the big game hunters or predator hunters? Valentines Day is a consideration for some. But to schedule a hunt for predators it should be during a more productive time in the season to call predators. In my opinion earlier in the season is better than late in the season.

The main focus is getting the most people to show up.

It may be more difficult for some to get time off work during the peak hunting times, with lots of people scheduling vacations for hunting. It is easier to get vacation time in the January - March time frame. Not that a fall hunt would not be good. May impact attendance.

I've never liked working with the casino, honestly, I hate the whole gambling experience. However, all-in-all the venue was better than the country kitchen. Morer room, more options. Some of the spirit of the event was lost. It's my opinion that the hunt has gone a bit off course since we moved both location and time of year. It used to be ALL about the hunt and the companionship of like minded people, now the hunting is less than 50% of what it's all about.

As far as the Reservation is concerned, the main problem there is the time of year we are hunting. In Arizona mid February is simply a bad time to hunt that country. Everything from the lack of responding coyotes to the rainy weather and wind is a result of WHEN the hunt is being held.

the hunt is focused on Predator hunters not disturbing or being disturbed by the local Big game hunters during the fall.

A quick look through the Arizona Big Game regulations shows the only months that there is not a big game season going on is roughly May through August. I know we all come from different areas and hunt varing habitat. However the places I hunt in general I don't have much of a conflict with big game hunter, we are on different ground. But I have broken off many stands due to bird hunter being around my calling stands. If I had to give way to the big game hunters I wouldn't go. If your setting a date make it during the best times to lots of predators.

Good point Bill, I didn't realize Big game seasons were so long out there. When would you say they are most diligent in the pursuit of big game?

Archery and the general rifle seasons probably take up the most time. Arizona subdivides generally all the big game hunts. Speaing in general seasons for deer, whitetail and mule deer, elk cow and bull, antelope, are divided up into rifle, archery, HAM (handgun archery and muzzeloader), muzzeloader and some junior hunts. To give you an quick over view of 2007-2008 deer hunts there was an archery hunt that started August 24 with another archery hunt ending January 31, 2008. At the same time there were over 40,000 permits issued through out the state during the months of October, November and December. Elk uses the same system and in 2008 there were over 26,000 tags issued from September through December. Big game hunter have their seasons and I have mine. I try to respect there ground as best I can but I'm not staying home until their season are over. I'll share the ground. For me it's harder to avoid the bird hunters.

Bearman - I asked that certain person, he would have admitted to doing it readily enough, he denies doing it, so I believe him. He thought it likely that someone from south eastern Arizona was the one and the reasons weren't necessarily an attempt to be negative. But he admitted that he didn't really know for sure.....

Remember, there are anti's everywhere, even in New Mexico. We need to face it, this is a big board and lots of people drop in to read it and we make no secret about where and when the annual hunt will be. It's only a matter of time before a bit of stupidity like animal rights activists shows its ugly head. I didn't mind the article at first, but after asking about why somethings were said I came to the realization that the newspaper writer didn't write exactly what was said. If you've ever seen a news guys at work this should be no surprise. I've seen two hour intersviews turned into 30 seond sound bites on the local news where the final story had nothing to do with what was said. It's an all to common story.

RF - I understood the thread, I believe my comments were in support of your moves .... both time and venue. Globe has been our home for many years, it's to bad the negatives have grown to the point where moving is an option we need to seriously look into. But, especially after some reflection, I must agree, it's time for a move..... Honestly, if it's in New Mexico I just might make it, it's certainly more interesting to me than Globe.

Guys and Gals,

I think for all the reasons stated this next hunt needs to be moved and see changes.

I see this as allowing some who wouldn't normally be able to attend show up because it's closer. It will also make it farther for some which is just a matter of geography. Some will want to be there because the hunting is better. Most all would be improvements from the "RES" and even more reason to be there!

I also think it is time to leave the home grounds of Will Craig and reach out to all the states for support and member attendance.

Spreading the word and showing that this is a sport the whole country enjoys is something that Will believed in! I'm thinking he would approve!

For those members (like me) who must rely on air travel to attend the Hunt, the location doesn't matter all that much. A plane ride is a plane ride...

It would be nice to see some more dogs in the field. The past two years @ Globe, the hunting seemed very spotty. The yotes would turn on and provide a flurry of action and then seemingly crawl back into their holes for a day. So I'm all for a more target friendly environment...

And to those members considering on attending the 2010 Hunt, all I can say is JUST DO IT!!! You will be glad you did! Meeting everyone in person is a real trip! The comradarie & atmosphere alone make it well worth the trip, not to mention all the funny accents you'll hear

Sean,
I promise we will hunt together this year. That is, of course if you'll tolerate a 'Yankee cityiot wannabe' on stand with ya

You shouldn't have any problems. Just shoot them before they get into my range. I can't shoot no coyote at 500 yards.

If you limit yourself to shots less than 100 yards, you don't stand a chance.

I'll be watching with intrest. I like the thought pattern here. I thought the Apaches I met were fine, but the Casino was kinda prone to take advantage. (Farrell Goode told me he got his hunters into the Casino for $56 per night!) And the Coyotes were shot to heck.

Just keep it in SW Mountian Lion country! I love hunting the first of January. I've always done well then. I've never had conflict with other hunters even when a season was on, neither as a caller nor as a big game hunter coming across callers. We're on the same team. I don't see it as much of an issue.
