Here's the cleaned up version.

Quote:

Finally got my M4 shooting the way I wanted!

When I first mounted the scope on it, it would group 2- 2 1/2" at 100.
I then went to work!

First I added a freefloat tube & installed it myself.
That helped! went to about MOA with that addition!

Next, the trigger was hard, grinding & horrible....I added a single stage RRA National Match that was a takeoff from another member here.
It worked wonders!
I took it out to the range & was getting 1 1/2" groups at 200 yards on a warm barrel....(can't beat that for a pick-up/calling rifle...)

OK, now that I have the rifle shooting well, & am probabaly finished with taking it apart, beyond fieldstripping for cleaning I decided it needed PAINT!

I hope this might help those that want to paint their AR, or stock on the bolt gun they deem needs it.
The terrain here is arid desert Southwest, so, I choose my colors with that in mind.
The paint I like is Rustoleum.
I use a glass cleaner to get all the oil off the surface to be painted. Make sure the surface is dry before starting.

I then tape off all the areas that I don't want paint on...scope numbers, buttpad, logos, etc. I used a flip-up set of caps set to the first ring on my Leupold to add contrast & protect the lens.

Next, I give the rifle the base coat. I used a textured Rustoleum "Sandstone" paint because it matches the terrain here & is very, very dull....

After getting coverage I want, I start applying the camo colors one at a time. I usually add 3 colors of the terrain to the basecoat for desired effect. In this case I used a grey, brown, & light green....Applied in that order.
I spray the color into a paper plate, then use artist sponges with the texture I want to apply the dipped paint to the rifle....

continued...

Quote:

Next, I add the green for the last color. I use it sparingly, as a little green goes a long way!

After allowing dry time, I spray the rifle with a clear, dull protective coat of clear Rustoleum. This protects the camo & adds durability for years of service. If you scratch it, just dab some color on with a Q-tip.!

And lastly, I pull off the taped areas that were covering my non-paint items.

As you can see, it is pretty effective camo for the area I hunt!

You can adjust the colors to suit your hunting conditions, season & terrain.

This is how the rifle started life with me...

After a little gunsmith & accurizing, this $570 bargain bin rifle has really impressed me with it's reliability & accuracy. I'd put it up against rifles costing more than twice what I have in it...

I hope the tutorial in paint helps those of you wanting to know how.

Any opinions you guys want to share with me is appreciated as well. Tell me what you think, or offer suggestions....

Thanks!

Barry

Here are a couple I have done. All my rifles are done with Krylon Fusion, ultra flat camo colors, and a faux finish sponge. Enjoy the pics

I notice that Barry and Apex did the barrels. Did you guys do any special prep for the barrels? The barrel I'm looking at doing is blued, and I've heard of people hitting it with some 400 or 600 wet/dry, but the thought of that really makes me nervous.

I use a good glass cleaner to take off the oil from the bbl.

but in this case, the finish was matte on the barrel, so the paint sticks well.

A bright stainless barrel is a different story, and will require bead blasting or something to "rough-up" the finish some to stick well.

I rough everything with 400 wet dry, and clean with rubbing alcohol, I am not trying to remove finish, just rough the surface so the paint can stick to the surface well.

I just re-did mine with the sponge technique a few weeks ago, to better match the timber, and clear cuts I have been hunting. It was to lightly colored at first, and now it really blends in with the timber (picture was taken in the backyard, though).

The Rustoleum paints are very easy to work with.

No kidding, Copper. A couple of years ago I simply wrapped some white electrical tape, in a none regular pattern, around a walnut stocked 223. I leaned the rifle against a tree for a minute or 3 and when I turned around it took me about 30 sec.s to find it. It was only about 5 steps away but the white pattern hid it against the white snow in the woods. Those jobs look splendid and I'm envious. Now you've tempted me. I think I'll try it with my 870 slug gun first to see how it turns out.

Lookin good Weston!
Being that you like shooing off those ladders, maybe you could have painted the underside "sky blue" for a better camo effect for those coyotes looking up at ya

You guys inspired me to show a weapon of mine. Thought I would add a little different one in winter camo. I'll show the first one with just the factory buttstock and caa pistolgrip painted flat white. Then two others to show the difference after sponge camo.
[image][/image]
Now this one is after I got the guts to sponge camo the whole gun.
[image][/image]
That broke it up quite a bit better and allowed the gun to blend in with my camo and the terrain I hunt in the winter a lot better. Here's two more.
[image][/image]
[image][/image]
Anyway, just something a little different...please let me know what you guys think. I am open to new methods and ideas for the future.

Go to the craft section of wal-mart and get a pack of natural sponges. They are cheaper in the craft section than the paint section.

Main thing is to make sure you get one with the large "bubbles" or holes in it.

Can someone help?
I had an old 870 wingmaster I am in the process of painting it 9-2009. It had rust and some pitting. I sanded most of the gun. In order for me to get the worst of it I had to hit it with some 220. I then did the process of sanding it as smooth as possible with lighter grit paper down to very fine scuff pad.
I put a coat of gray primer on, let that dry then finished the primer with its 2nd coat. Heres my question..

When the second coat dried it has somewhat of a rough texture in some spots, almost like I added grits of sand. So I then very very lightly hit the primer with a very fine scuff pad , they came out.
At 530 "today" I put my first coat of khaki tan on. Should if when dry it has small bumps should I scuff lightly again? Is this part of the job? Also after I have all my colors on and if again it is a little bumpy looking do I scuff lightly and then clear?
I "think" I am holding it far enough away and I dont think I am putting to much on ?
Help guys?

Thwe sandy grain will stay somewhat, but after you put a clearcoat on, it won't feel gritty.

Don't scuff it before the clearcoat. It'll stick just fine.
It may smell like "paint" for a couple of days, but it goes away.

Sounds like you are doing it right.

Post pics when you are done.

Barry,
Ill start taking pics now. The one thing with this gun is it has a camo remington stock and forearm that are like brand new. The stock has some weird shapes and colors. its kinda like all ran together. I decided not to paint it this time anyway. I am just painting the reciver, barrel and the pump peice.
I have painted things before just not a gun. Barry I am also using the H.S. Camo paint. I got a can of minwax clear polyurethane will that be fine?

I'll throw a few of mine in the pot. Rem700 in .17 Did about 4 months ago. This is the Third paint job that it has had. I get bored with them easy.
I might change them here in the next couple of weeks.

Kenawell,

The paint job looks great!
Very interesting pattern.

One thing I noticed is that you took it apart when painting it. There's nothing wrong with that, but you need to be sure the paint is not going to affect the operation of you slide & the chambering of a shell from the chamber end of the barrel.

When I paint something I usually keep disassembly to a minimum to protect the internal moving parts.

Great looking camo though.

BT,

I have painted stainless with good results.
Here's the first rifle I did over 2 years ago.

The barrel is a 24" stainless.

The only trouble I have had with it is that if you bang the barrel against something hard, it may chip off a very small bit of paint.

I fix that by spraying a small amount of the camo paint in a paper plate & dipping a Q-Tip in it, then just dobbing it on to cover up the chip.

It hasn't flaked off in big pieces, & has not affected accuracy. Even got the barrel pretty hot a couple of times.

Sure you can. I've done several.
You can actually take a pretty ugly wood stock & give it new life with a paint job.

Does it matter if I take the barrel off before I paint it? And how important is a clear cote. I bought the Krylon camo paint and it doesnt look like it requires a clear coat.

You can paint barrel on or off. The clearcoat adds durability to the paintjob, and makes cleaning it easy without rubbing off the painted finish. When mine gets dirty I spray the paintjob with glass cleaner and wipe it off. No oil.

Hey Barry,

Ever thought of doing a short video on the "how to" of the camo process. Maybe do a complete camo job and give instruction as you go. Some guys like me are visual learners and like to see it done before jumping in.

Just a thought about a video. I for one would be interested in purchasing a copy.

Since i have a bit of an addiction to painting guns i have tried a couple dif techs. I used a cheap paint bush once and took some sissors and cut some of the bristles out to make it spaced and it turned out pretty cool also. If i was a lil more computer savy i would post some pics for yall. The best thing i figured out was the less you try to make it look "good" the better it turns out looking.

I'm preparing a synthetic stock for painting.

One question, will acetone melt the stock even though just a dampened rag is used. I know acetone evaporates quickly.

Great looking guns fellas. I am interetsed In painting up my Reamington 770 .270. I have a few questions.

Whats the best way to get the paint to stick to a synthetic stock?

Whats the best way to get It to stick to a stainless barrel?

I just painted two guns with synthetic stocks and the paint is still stuck. I just lightly sanded the whole gun and hit it with a GOOD primer. I sprayed those. I did however sponge my .270 and it has a stainless barrel and it's still holding up after a year of use. I did a light sand on the barrel. I make sure the guns I paint are super clean before applying any paint.

Rustoleum makes a Rusty Metal primer to prevent and paint over rusted metal.

What kind of primer and sand paper did you use? Also do you sand the scope also? How many of you paint the bolt? Do you just paint It seperatly?

Zack, I'm not sure I'd sand anything with sandpaper.
I sure wouldn't paint the bolt because it'll not work right if paint gets in the wrong spot.
The thing about painting a rifle is that you can use paint remover and the rifle is back the way it was. Not so if you sand it. The paint will stick really well if you just clean it good and get all the grease & oil off.

Jeff, they sell the webbing paint at Lowes or Home Depot in most spots.

Thanks Barry.
I had a friend help me with a paint job on a new HS Remington 700 stock a few days ago. We did a Krylon Fusion base, and he had some black webbing paint in a small can that he found at a place called "Joanne's". I figured it was probably the fabric and crafts place by the same name.
Wally World doesn't have it here. I'll look at Lowe's. thumbup1

Thanks!

I painted the Fox Pro last night and I don't think it turned out like I wanted it to. All of your guys stuff looks pretty good. I was trying to practice because the rifle is next and want it to look good. I think I might of pressed to hard on the foam or something? I think I might just need to slow down and take more time.

Quick question from a noob!!!

You guys make it look SUPER easy.. But I know with the lack of "crafty" talent it wont be! However, Im gonna try it anyway! (on my 870 first)

My question is:
It seems like if you painted it like in your tutorial with the charging handle still in there, when the paint dried and you pulled back on the handle paint would flake off from the areas where it came into contact with the upper. When you moved it wouldnt paint flake off?

Thank you!

Well I decided that I would make this last a little longer since I was going to put a lot of time into it. So I decided to order the clear matte finish from Duracoat and put that on instead of a regular clear coat. I will let everyone know how it turns out when I am done and if the Duracoat was worth it or not.

Dan Brothers,
We used Krylon Ultra-Flat Camouflage paint and Krylon Matte Finish/1311 for the final coat. The Camo paint comes in four colors Light Brown, Dark Brown, Black and Green. Used clean release duck tape for masking areas off. All from Wal-Mart. Got the sponge from Lowe's. It was a round cylinder shaped sponge that came in a red fishnet bag in the paint department next to the brushes.

I followed rockinbbars instuctions on applying the paint.

The base coat was two hits of the light brown. It dries fairly fast.

I definitely recommend practicing with the sponge on something else. The first couple tries didn't look good at all to me. We would get to much paint on the sponge and block out to much of the base paint. I ended up cuting the end of the sponge at a 45 degree angle to have more control.

Order of paint after the base was Black, Green and then Dark Brown. We went light on everything because it adds up fast.

Last we did two coats of Krylon Matte Finish.

Hope this helps.

To anyone who is going to do this I have to say one thing.
Don't get discouraged when you apply your first color with the sponge. I thought there was no way mine was going to look remotely good when I looked at it at first. The more i did the better it started to look. Just thought I'd say don't be suprised if your first reaction is "I shouldn't of done this it looks horrible." Just keep on going and it will look fine.

Practice on a piece of cardboard or a wood board before you start spraying on the rifle. It will perfect the technique for you.

I didn't paint the grip, as after a week of solid hunting with it I decided that I hate it. I'm going to buy a G27 for it.

The cheek piece is an after market clamshell gizmo. Having the scope up on the handle, you have to have it in order to get a solid cheek weld. The disadvantage it that you can no longer drop down & use the iron sights, but with my eyes that's not really much of a problem any way.

I didn't treat the plastic with any thing. The desert sand base coat is Krylon, the green & brown are Rustoleum. I'm wishing I'd picked up a can of charcoal, not real happy with the brown. But it'll do, coyotes are color blind. The main goal was to just break it up.

I may revisit & do the metal later. I'm going to replace the scope rings, those are cheap crap, so I figured I'd do that & then decide if I'll paint the rest or not.

You guys have done some great work. As color blind as I am the gun would need to be "camo'd" in traffic lime and hunter orange.

Things I take to the field or to the stream have a tag of orange or I will never recover them if dropped.

Good work and thanks for the tips.

Best regards,
chalmitch

i looked at pics and really like allthe the paint jobs. just looking for some suggestions. here in s indiana its gets very cold but doesnt always snow. i dont think an all white base coat would work well for me. but any of you have any ideas on some colors that could kinda blend in during snow and no snow conditions? maybe like an earth base with some brown od green and some white or gray on it?

Thanks for the tutorial rockinbbar!! Here is my attempt...I think it came out okay.

It sure was nerve racking getting started though. I must have sat there for 30 minutes with the spray can in my hand wondering if I really wanted to do this! scared

I have a remington r-15, so most of the gun is camo already. I really want to do my scope/rings though. I have been hesitant so far, as to not make a mistake I will regret. Beyond covering the lenses obviously, does anyone cover anything else when painting your scope? It looks like most people don't, but I would hate to mess with the swaro too much. Please let me know any helpful tips or info. Thanks.

Wow, just found this thread--very cool. I have a Mossberg 500 12ga that I hunt watefowl with and it underwent a camo job years ago. Also did a Savage M12 syn/SS. A few things I learned then and in the time since: I used Cabela's duck boat paint as a base coat. This may not be a good color for some locales but that stuff STICKS. However I should have sanded the glossy varnished stock on the Mossberg a little first as it has chipped off in a few places. I did not dissassemble the guns, masked critical mating parts or numbers/lettering and used baling wire to suspend from trigger guard or slingstud. I used cheapo throwaway brushes. For the patterns I watched the mistint shelf at local hardware store for flat exterior latex paint in appropriate colors. Very inexpensive--in some cases, free! Touchups can be done with q-tip as suggested above or cotton ball, napkin or your finger. Rattlecan flat black is good for adding shadows. Just my $.02; hope it's helpful.

Just searched Cabela's for "duck boat paint." Parker is the brand. Gallons, quarts, and rattle cans available in 4 colors. I think there was only 2 colors when I did my guns.

Just regular old Krylon Fusion flat camoflauge is what I prefer. You can find it at Wal-Mart, Ace Hardware, just about anywhere.

I posted this in a different thread but it looks like this one has more traffic. This is all Rustoleum. Base coated in dark earth and then sponged the second color. I'm going to add to it tonight to reduce contrast between colors:

Most paints will scratch to a degree...If you put a couple of coats of clear Matte over the final color scheme, it will retard the potential quite a bit...Most of the adhesion factor will depend on preparation at the start as far as peeling...

I use a "self etching primer" on mine, after a really thorough cleaning with a degreaser...

Anyone used duracoat much? Im curious how hard it is to apply and how durable it is?

Both of my other planned projects fell through the floor. Im still wanting some kind of a project for this coming year so I think Im going to go get myself another 10/22 or a little bolt action .22 and do a custom paint job.

Not sure if I want to go with the sponge an krylon, or make an attempt at using some duracoat with one of their little stencil kits. The duracoat would be a lot more expensive but would look pretty sweet. I dont want to spend the extra money on duracoat if its not going to be any more durable.

Does it really matter. I would like to see some well designed field tests done to indicate whether or not a camo rifle makes a significant difference. It would also be good to see a field test results on the effectiveness of covering your rifle with a gillie rag vs plain vs camo. I have an inlaid pecan stock with contrasting i8nlays of mesquite and manzanita edged in silver and large turquoise stone accents. I use a homemade gillie stocking/rag of fleece netting and burlap strings with old Christmas garlands woven in. It hides the blingy pimped out rifle well enough for me hide it well. Then I take it to bars after I pull off the rag and pick up tasteless women.

Has anyone found a way to paint the overmolding on a Hogue fore-end (that actually works)? I'm too cheap to swap it out for one without the rubber, plus it's kinda nice in the cold. But black just don't work in the snow!

what do you men do to prep the rifle for painting?

which de-greaser?

do you steel wool any exterior parts (stock, barrel, etc.) prior to painting?

i got the actual painting down, but just wondering about the prep.

thanks

I was finally able to get my hands on a new Savage Axis Scoped Package in 22-250, I paid $289. Took it from the Gun store to the Range and had Bulls-eye by the 4th shot as it really was already Bore-Sighted (as Savage claims)and very close out of the box.
The factory trigger-pull however was ridiculous,at 7+lbs it was unacceptable.I started with the trigger spring change mod. which gave me 4 1/2lbs and I finally got the honing stone out and polished some edges till I got a crisp 44 ounce pull.(modified rifle was then subject to numerous safety off-cocked "slam/bump/smack/jar" tests and passed with flying colors.
I started painting with the stock at first and did the rest after I got a Red LED light mounted on the scope.I made a "Halo-Light" shield out of a PVC fitting and used electrical shrink tubing to attach it to the flashlight. The shield really does help and the Red LED gives amazing night vision into the darkness.

Ok so it`s hard to stop once you start, maybe it`s the fumes from the spray cans.

Did my Marlin model 60 22LR a while back. I didn't have a sponge handy but had some old carpet laying around. Put kind of a woodland camo base and then filled in the spots with rustoleum camo line of spray paint. Sprayed the paint on a paper plate and dabbed the carpet in it. Going to do my Savage 223 when I get a new scope.

I did this Rem 700 last year and it has held up well. I used pine needles laid over the top and re arranged them in a random pattern between coats.

cool thread guys.. i think my gun needs a little color! then again i mostly use it at night.

I thought of making a pattern of animal silhouette... every kill , just add another stamp.. kinda like they used to do on ww2 planes when they got kills...

Got the nerve to do my savage yesterday. Rustoleum tan was my base coat and cut up some carpet to use as the sponge and used brown and OD green to use as brush. tell me what ya think.

These all look great. I did a stock a couple years back using krylon and sections of a broom head fanned out as a stencil. I'm going to do my savage .223 in white using the white duracoat then sponge light brown or gray to add more contrast and depth. I need to wait until I get access to a warm garage or after the winter ends. I like the idea of having a snow camo specific gun instead of always wrapping it in tape. I'll do the Ruger American I'm getting in a different color.

Nice rifles guys! I thought I'd show you guys what I use to camo my guns. It's called mcnett camo form wrap. It's an alternative if you don't want to paint it. They have a bunch of different patterns.

Here's my .22 hornet in camo form:

I also like to add some natural camouflage in the field like grass and moss:

All these paint jobs are pretty awesome, I've been wanting to paint a few of my rifles but really couldn't think of way to do them until I saw the sponge idea! And I just happen to have an old single shot 12 gauge to do a test run with... thanks for posting stuff like this!
