I have gone back thru time to bring the answers to the most common asked questions about the AR platform. This has taken hours to do, and without a doubt some wont see it. Even in the event of it being a sticky which I hope it happens! Some will read this thread and still post a question about AR scope mounts because for some reason they may think they will get a different answer than the hundreds before them, human nature I guess. I have broke it out to include lots of items, If you have a thread in mind that deserves to be included, or one you posted in the past, please PM me with a link to the thread, I will insert it into this first post. It is my intention to put as much AR info into this post as possible, but keep it organized at the same time. By the way 500 pages back in the F&R section is only about a year and a half.

If you see your question...... kind of asked here, READ the links, chances are your question might get answered. Plus reading about the firearms you own just expands your knowledge on the firearm itself, how bad is that.

These links were lost in the last software upgrade. Some of them have been replaced on page 3 of this thread.

Not sure that this is what you have in mind but its a good read and addresses .223 reloading for AR's and is quite informative.

It was alot of work and I will always add to it. It has shown to be worth the effort.

Yesterday was the 7 day mark since I originally posted the thread. It had over 1000 hits, its been getting at least 150/200 hits a day. So someone is reading it, hopefully finding what they need too.

WOW! My wife is going to hate this page, it's going to take me DAYS to read it all....

I don't know where one would look, but some links to the wssm calibers that come from DTech, Olympic, etc., might be a good addition. (As if you haven't spent enough time already!)

Thanks for the info!

I posted on one of the " different brands" links but all of it was over a year old so I thought I would ask the ? here. Why does no one mention the Colts? I have a match grade Hbar 16 I bought years ago when they said they were going to quit making them. I allways wanted one so I figured I had bettter get one then. I have been nocking around the idea of swapping the top for a longer one and trying it on the yote hunt? HOOVY

The Colt is, was and will continue to be one of the more expensive as well as desireable of the AR15s. If you wish to trade a very clean, all original Colt Upper for a Bushmaster, RRA, DPMS etc, etc Varmint/Target it will not be hard to do. Unless you have a good trigger in the Colt Lower you might consider swapping the whole gun for the congiguration your wanting with a good trigger. Make sure you know the value of your Colt before swapping.

well I was just thinking of getting a new upper. Galati has some real good prices on uppers and just the barrels. Can't decied which way to go??? One other ? why do the longer barrels have 1/9 twist and stock is 1/12??

THANKS !! James

The slower twists were used on the earlier guns and evolved as the rifles were changed diff types of ammunition, bullet weights etc. I think for the most part at this time the 1 in 9 is most common with a lot of folks useing a 1 in 8 or even a 1 in 7 to stabalize the heavier bullets. If you are wanting Varmint/Target type accuracy you will probably want a chrome moly or stainless steel barrel with a twist appropriate for the bullet weights you intend to use, probably a 1 in 9 unless you intend to shoot 55 gr with a poly tip or heavier which you may want a 1 in 8. BTW you will find the diff twists in all barrel lengths.

I bought a upper for my H-bar colt. It has a 1-12 twist and I shoot soft points with it. It will out shoot the original colt 1-9 twist. Puts it to shame in fact!! they are 55 grains. I'm not looking for a light weight carry upper with a 1-12 twist. When you buy a bolt action rifle you get a 1-12 twist. Why not the AR. I dont care to shoot the heavy stuff like a 62 grain or heavier bullet. A 223 is already slow, shoot the heavy stuff it gets even slower. Havn't shot a coyote yet that didn't die from a 55 grainer. Just my 2 cents worth.

Just to add to the above twist comments.

I have a 1/7 carbine that was my first AR and it dosen't shoot the 55gr well at all. 4-5" at 100yds at best. Go to the 60-75gr and it's a whole different gun.

I have a 1/9 that's a 20" stainless and it has simillar perfomance. It still is not as good as I would have liked with the 55gr bullets. But with the 60s... wow, what a difference.

Depends on what you want to shoot for lead.

I've got a 16" Colt chrome lined 1/7 twist light weight barrel that shoots 50 gr HP's and ballistic tip right at 1". Had a 1/8 twist Kreiger that shot everything I tried under 3/4" and that ranged from 77 gr SMK's to 45 gr Winchester white box ammo.

You can't overstabilize a bullet, your barrel may not like a certain bullet and you may get a bullet to come apart in mid air but doubtful at 223 velocities.

Thanks all for the good links. Questions now. Are the 2 stage triggers like the accutriggers on savages? And will it slow down my 2nd and 3rd shots unlike a single stage trigger?Like a little pause in it.

Here's a pic of the system i'm using for long-range coyotes. The 1st is the old (now defunct)DPMS VLD magazine that i'm using with the 65 JLK Low Drag. The next shows the magazine length for the VLD magazine using the 223 AI case with the 75 A-Max. Wish somebody would start making this magazine again.--

Awesome compilation, but like others are commenting, all the links redirect me to a page that says I am not logged in, and even if I "re-log" in there, it just sends me back to the same page again. All the links do this???

Look on page 3. Furhunter. Bluto, I and maybe some others tracked down and fixed as many links as we could find. The problem was caused when PM went to a "new" board format and broke all the original links.

Nice, huh?

I just bought a DPMS 'Oracle' entry level AR & it is my first AR type rifle. Man I have a lot to learn.
This thread is just what I'm looking for.
By the way, does anyone here have any experiance with the model I have? Accuracy, reliability, etc.? My max range, guesstimate, would be 250 yds or less. I've mounted a 3x9 Pentax Pioneer scope with Burris tactical rings. Gonna load up some 55 gr. Varmint Nitemare bullets over some Varget & see whats what.
Thank you 'Furhunter' for sum very helpful info.

I put together a list of links for building an AR for about as cheap as possible from different online retailers. Its a pretty quick way to find the cheapest places to find all the different parts and goes through a parts schematic from Midway so you don't miss any parts.

I have also used the junkyard genius method along with a trigger adjustment screw to take it the creep and it made for a nice hunting trigger that is very consistent pull

FYI - not a bad scope for an AR, especially considering the price.

I just went back several pages now and all but some water cooler link worked. Just using Google as a browser and AOL.

2'x2' as in 2ft x 2ft? Sounds like its not bore sighted.
A .920 barrel !! WOW I bet that thing is heavy.

Trying to dial in windage on my AR .223 with16” Wilde barrel 1-8 twist. The windage dialed in with 1” group at 100 yards is 12” left a 200 yards... The ammo being used are reloads (50 grain VMAX bullets using 1.750 grams (27 grains) of H4895 powder. This AR is a build. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
