I dont quite understand. This is for any doctor to check for these if you turn up sick afer hunting and/or handling dead animals?

If you have been handling animals & turn up sick, the Dr. may not know to check for animal related diseases...

Anthrax is naturally spread from herbivores to the carnivores that eat them. Cattle is often the first link in the chain. The cattle eat the naturally occurring spores of this bacteria while browsing.

This is why some large animal vets have been receiving anthrax vaccine shots since their first release in the mid-late 50's.

Good Idea, the dad of one of my coworkers died from plague a few years ago. He had been hunting with his son when he cut his finger while skinning a rabbit. He got sick the next day and they came down the mountain. He was very sick by the time they got to the hospital. It took 3 days for the doctors to find out it was plague. The treatment was too late and he died. A card like this would've helped. His son didn't make the connection to the illness and the rabbit till days later, cause we just don't think about plague anymore in these modern times. The doctors said he would have been fine if they had known sooner!

Go to your Properties in the printer & select the scale to print.

You can reduce the picture size by increasing the scale size.

Hopefully it'll work the same for you as it does for me.

Sheep are the #1 U.S. domestic carriers of anthrax (Bacillus anthracis) spores. Thus, anthrax has rightfully earned its secondary name of "Wool-Sorter's Disease," which is the pulmonary form of anthrax. Most cases of anthrax are of the non-lethal, cutaneous variety which cause black dermal lesions. The pulmonary (Wool-sorter's) form of anthrax is the true killer, but it is a disease difficult to contract as is demonstrated by the difficulty in "weaponizing" the spores for bioterror and military purposes. Wool-sorters are only at greater risk because of the spore load (spore quantity) to which they are exposed. The probability of contracting pulmonary anthrax on a hunting venture is VERY, VERY low. As mentioned above, plague (Yersinia pestis) is a greater danger in that the probabilty of contracting it is higher than anthrax. Prairie dogs are the hunting risk associated with plague, so just shoot 'em, don't handle 'em!

If I were to choose the most significant threats to hunters from the list on the card, I'd say:
a) Rabies
b) Lyme disease
c) Rocky Mtn Spotted Fever
d) Tularemia
e) Plague
f) West Nile Virus (not on the card)

I promise there are several folks on this board with undiagnosed cases of Giardiasis, Ascariasis, and Cryptosporidiosis. These are not life-threatening, but very prevalent.

Do your coyotes n wolves in the US have Hydatids.
Aussie dingos are full of it - each n every one of them. There's no vaccine either. It is the nastiest, slow acting killer you'll ever see!

A guy in a neighboring town got the plague last fall after cutting his finger while skinning a coyote. Luckily they caught it and he didn't die. This card is a good idea.

My company sells photo id equipment, so I made up a bunch of these on plastic credit card size stock and handed them out to my friends. We had a guy who used to hunt with us who contracted Leptospirosis from skinning coons. He was hospitalized in SERIOUS condition and about 24 hours away from a "dirt nap" when his wife mentioned to the doctor that he was a coon hunter! He was a Lucky guy. He is now a BIG fan of wearing rubber gloves when handling animal carcuses. Scary stuff!

Thanks Barry.

I was watching a series of three videos prepared by Mississippi State University on the wild pig problem and one of the topics was zoonotic diseases.

Rubber gloves go into the hunting bag next trip.

One more. Raccoon roundworm. It can cause blindness or death. No known cure but there is a drug being used in experiments you can take if you catch it early enough, within 3 days of exposure. Don't remember the name of the drug. Present in up to 80% of all raccoon feces in some areas, and the eggs can remain alive for up to 3 years. Most family physicians are not familiar with this disease, but epidemiologists are.

Here's a link to a partial list of zoonotic diseases.

Nasty stuff.

Weasel - you can alter the size to normal in your printing options, most likely you're defaulted to "fit to page" option.

I have a very good friend that has a set-up for night light, goes to Waco every year. Brandon Moore-chelsea outdoors! sells the NightHunt XLR, this light is so very awesome, I couldnt believe what I had been missing, until I mounted this light on my gun. comes in red and green led bulb. Waco is the cream of the crop as far as information with other pro. hunting. just sayin! Semper Fi!!

I had a bad case of tularemia when I was 13, nearly took me away from here. I never skinned another rabbit without rubber gloves on.

Thanks for the card. I hope I never need it, but at least I have it if I do.

Sad to see one item on the card - the effect that that has had is profound.

Plague - Had a vaccination in 1967 - for three days - it felt like very bone in my body had been nastily cracked, screaming sore throat, unreal headache, undeliverable sensitivity to light. So seeing that I looked around and sure enough our quarry Mr Coyote can give us that. My bottom line should I take out Mr. Coyote, he will lie where he dies. I am in this for the challenge nothing else. I am also not in it to remove every coyote from the planet, just the occasional encounter. The part for me that is meaningful is being out - watching nature and the interactions of all the creatures, and then the test can I fool such a smart guy?

Many thanks to the OP, I think this is very useful. I've recreated the card and added Cryptosporidiosis and West Nile to the list. I did not add Echinococcus since it is already listed (Hydatid Disease = Echinococcus).

It's sized just a tad smaller than my Driver's license, 82mm x 52mm (3.23" x 2.05") when printed.

Three formats are provided:
  • MS Word 2013 (Full editable if you have MS Word or Google Docs)
  • PDF
  • Image file

My brother hog hunts with dogs a lot and spends a lot of time in the brush. Got bad sick for a long time off and on. Turned out to be RMSF and Lyme disease. Had to argue with the doctors to get that tested. This card might have helped him out!

Here in southeast oklahoma I seldom take a coyote that does not have mange. if I am in an area where I can dig I bury them, but I never touch them with bare hands
I contracted rocky mountain spotted fever two consecutive years (2013-2014) but not from varmint hunting. first year was a tick bite while brush-hogging, second year was another bite while putting a fawn through a fence to return to its mother. the fawn was literally covered in ticks and i did not discover that bite until late in the day. still have recurring headaches, mild vertigo.

Definitely a good idea. This also applies if you travel routinely out of your area. For example, in my area, tick borne diseases are almost unheard of, but other problems (some of the fungal issues) are more common. Also if you routinely work with livestock in areas that aren't primarily agricultural areas. Doctors are trained to "look for horses not zebras when you hear hoofbeats..." Of course that doesn't apply if you live in Africa...

You probably don’t fully understand the situation.... that’s a riot thank you for the belly laugh I needed that today it’s zero here in Denver and for some reason I’m wishing I was out freezing my [beeep] off calling animals instead of making money driving trucks but I guess that’s why I am a predator hunter right?
