Two men were shot dead when they forced their way into a University of Arizona student's midtown rental early Thursday, police said.
The home invasion, shortly before 12:30 a.m., was in the 800 block of East Adams Street between North Euclid and North Tyndall avenues, Sgt. Fabian Pacheco said.
The 23-year-old student was home alone when he opened the front door to investigate noises he heard outside, Pacheco said.
He saw two men he did not know; one, whose face was partially hidden by a bandanna, had a gun by his side, Pacheco said.
The student tried to close the door, but the men pushed their way in as the resident ran for his gun, the officer said. The student shot both of the intruders.
When police arrived, two men in their mid-20s were dead on the floor inside the home.
Police are investigating the double homicide. Authorities do not known what the two men were looking for, or if the pair had approached the house by mistake.
The student had been renting the home for a few months and there was no indication he was part of criminal activity that would have made him a target, Pacheco said.

There is two we taxpayers will not have to pay for. The student should be exempt from from income taxes for the next 20 years. Nice bonus don't ya think?

Both men identified by Tucson police as the suspects killed in an apparent home invasion Thursday north of the University of Arizona had criminal records here.
Shontel L. Early, 30, and Wesley O. Fenstermacher, 29, were shot and killed by a UA student, said Sgt. Fabian Pacheco.
He said the shooting is still under investigation.
The men were killed after they forced their way into the rental property in the 800 block of E. Adams St., Pacheco said in a news release.
According to public court records, Fenstermacher had been arrested eight times and Early 10 times over the last 10 years on a variety of misdemeanor charges. Some of the cases were traffic offenses.
Early was found guilty of theft in 1999; in 2003, four individuals obtained an order of protection against him alleging domestic violence.
In September 2008, he was found guilty of driving with a suspended license.
Fenstermacher was found guilty of criminal trespassing in 2004. He was arrested on an aggravated assault charge in 2005 and pleaded guilty to a DUI charge in 2000.
Pacheco gave this account of the incident:
At 12:38 a.m. Thursday, Operations Division West police officers were sent to a residence in the 800 block of E. Adams St, "in reference to a shooting."
The resident called 911 and reported that he shot two men who forced entry into his home at gunpoint.
Tucson Police Homicide Detectives determined the home's tenant was alone in a one-bedroom guesthouse when he answered a knock at his front door.
The man saw two men, one of them pointing a handgun at him, Pacheco said.
He said that as he tried to close the door, the men pushed their way in as he ran for his own gun.
The 23-year-old victim fired at them, killing both of them, Pacheco said.
The victim told police one of the men had covered his face in a bandanna.
What the two men were seeking at the rental property is not known, Pacheco said.
The student had been renting the home for a few months and there was no indication he was involved in any activity that would have made him a target, he said.
He said it's possible the men were targeting whoever lived in the rental prior to the current tenant, or that the attack was random.
Students living off campus in the UA area are "generally safe," said Sgt. Juan Alvarez of the University of Arizona Police Department, which does not have jurisdiction in this case.
He urged students who hear noises outside their residence and suspect they are at risk to call 911.

They got what they needed.

I'm sorry for the student that shot them....Dead men don't make for a great night's sleep, no matter the circumstances.

I agree rockinbbar the sad thing is it was at least two days that said still under investagation. That just about figures the bad guys has more rights then anybody. Dead or alive. It was them or him he did what any of use would of done. Its just a shame that you read or here of thing like this everyday but most of the time its not the same out come. the good guy survived. Its a bad world out there and its just getting worse. with all the laws with child abuse what are parents to do. putting you kid in time out dont teach him a thing. I got good old spankens and glad i did. I dont belive in beatings but nothing wrong with a learning swat. A lot of kids just dont respect there parents you can see that in the stores when your shoping. It all starts with the young good or bad.

Here's part of the problem: reporting. Look at this quote from the original post.

Makes the good guy sound a little guilty of something does it not? While technically correct the wording makes the victim sound somewhat like a criminal himself.

Arizona should give the guy a break somehow. He just saved the state no telling how much money in trial and incarceration costs plus rescued untold numbers of future victims of these two thugs.
