Two men were shot dead when they forced their way into a University of Arizona student's midtown rental early Thursday, police said.
The home invasion, shortly before 12:30 a.m., was in the 800 block of East Adams Street between North Euclid and North Tyndall avenues, Sgt. Fabian Pacheco said.
The 23-year-old student was home alone when he opened the front door to investigate noises he heard outside, Pacheco said.
He saw two men he did not know; one, whose face was partially hidden by a bandanna, had a gun by his side, Pacheco said.
The student tried to close the door, but the men pushed their way in as the resident ran for his gun, the officer said. The student shot both of the intruders.
When police arrived, two men in their mid-20s were dead on the floor inside the home.
Police are investigating the double homicide. Authorities do not known what the two men were looking for, or if the pair had approached the house by mistake.
The student had been renting the home for a few months and there was no indication he was part of criminal activity that would have made him a target, Pacheco said.
