300 BO

Hello everyone,
I am needing some advice from real world experience. I am interested in getting a blackout for hunting coyotes and maybe deer. It would be a 16inch barrel and I would get my first suppressor for it. I would use subsonic ammo. My question is it practical and worth the cost? I also have my eye on a M1A that would cost about the same after every thing for the BO. Thanks for your time.
Jon

I own a 300 Whisper and wouldn't advise hunting with anything subsonic, ESPECIALLY if you don't absolutely have to. WAY better choices out there when your talking full power loads. If you are set on one and there is no alternative look at the 208 Amax or anything heavier. At subsonic speeds your going to need all the mass your gun will handle for energy on target. If you want the ultimate in quiet and reliable look at a bolt gun. Some ARs are finicky with sub's. I have a Ruger American and run an SAS Arbiter and Reaper on it with great results in accuracy and EXTREMELY quiet!

Know the limits when shooting with subsonics distance is a huge factor. Bullets perform very differently at sub speed. I shoot factory Rem 220 OTM subs and have recovered several bullets that show no distortion after shooting through potatoes, grapefruit and lodging into the dirt bank.

The blackout is an awesome round for stealth, We've taken a few coyotes with the round, but consider a 50yd zero with over a 2 foot drop from your zero to 100yds, similar to shooting a bow and arrow.
We've been working with CEB and are using a 190 grain rounds designed for subsonic expansion, they work great, and limit some of the runners.
Deer can be taken easily and effectively if your comfortable with cranial vault shots.

I have been trying to research it and it sounds cool and fun to have but for hunting maybe not. It seems the trajectory is a major concern, definitely need range finder and no your drops. The bullets seem to act like fmjs and the ones that work are 2 bucks each. Some say no blood trails and recommend shooting the animal twice for effective trauma. I don't know it seems like more negative aspects of hunting than positive.

Trajectory is the major downfall of this caliber... It's NOT my go to choice, but it has it's place, many times there are 3 of us, one that covers mid to LR, and another for 100 and in.
Thick cover, Close Range, and Quiet, is when/why we use it.

I love to Shoot Subsonic 300 BO when hunting Whitetail.
It's like bow hunting. DOCJon. Your 100% correct. You have to know your range with in 10-20 yrds, have a through knowledge of your ballistics then apply them. I have killed 10+ deer from 20yrds to 255yrds. All with 240GR SMK. The 35 yards was the most on ran. Shot placement of course is important. I hit lungs and heart.
The sound of the impact is great. Plus in TN you can shoot several deer in one day. I put down 3 at one sitting before they knew what was up.

How ever. I did more then my due diligence. I confirmed my DOPE, out to 275, and could hit 6" steel out to it. If you have the time and the patience it is a Ball.
I have a Rem 700 action, PTG bolt, Trued and Blued AICS 2.0 Chassis, Bart Barrel at 16", Running a SAS Reaper. 7" can STUPID Quiet with Sub-Sonic ammo.

Hope this helps.

No sir, if I'm going to run supers it'll be out of my 250 for coyotes, We built the MOD 1 for a specific purpose and it works great, if you watch this video we make repetitive shots at a quarter mile with the blackout, if that's the case make sure you have your dope handy.

The wound channel is much better with the CEB's, than the standard 200 Scenars or similar projo's.
Bolt is the way to go for the quietest set up, hands down.

Love the 300 BLK, My 6 year old loves it also. She shoots steel and I shoot what ever ails me. Like Skinny said know your dope and the bastards are dead with absolutely no noise.

How is the handi rifle in it? I would get the ruger or Remington but I am left handed and really like left handed bolt guns. What suppressor do you recommend for the blackout?

Handy Rifle isn't bad at all. Good for Subs out to 200 or so.
and Supers 350-400 range. With proper Optic.

Can, Are you wanting to dedicate this can to 300BO only?
If you the SAS Reaper is a great 7" can. looking at 33-35 DB reduction of standard 308's.
I have shoot Sub's in AR's with a Reaper and its great.
#2. AAC Cyclone. Not light, but value priced.
#3. You can get a Omega, or Harvester form SICO. both good for 300BO. Omega is Smaller, Harvester is lighter.
#4. AAC Tirant 9mm can with Fixed barrel spacer.
#5. SICO Octane 9mm same set up.
#6. Gemtech GMT-300. It's rated #6. Only due to not having shot one. They look great, sound good on video's. Have good stats. Just don't want to recommend something I haven't had hands on.

Feel free to PM me if you have more questions,

I have one in the AAC handi rifle also, was a little expensive though. Works well with any 30 cal suppressors shooting subs. I run a lot of cans on my 300BLK's but my favorites are the Thunderbeast, Silencerco and SRT cans.

I have been running my Blackouts subsonic for the majority of this season. I shoot a 220 grain bullet that has proven to expand at subsonic velocities http://www.blackoutbullets.com/collections/all. On my bolt gun I use a nightforce 2.5-10 scope and have marked my scope turret using a label maker for 50, 75 and 100 yard zeros. It makes it very easy to quickly dial my distance when needed. Every once in a while I will shoot supersonic. This same scope also has a mark for a 200 yard zero in a different color for supers.

Practicality.....I would def not have the BO as my only caliber if I could only choose one. It is a fun round to shoot subsonic and will do its part of the shooter does his...a 220 to the brain at 1000 FPS will stop anything I have encountered in South Texas. In my experience hunting with subs is fun but not of much benefit from a game-spooking standpoint. Game still hear the report and scram wether shooting supers or subs, however, I have had more than one sounder run towards me after a suppressed shot with supers.

Suppressor choice.....I have the cyclone, thunderbeast 30p-1, and SDN-6.
If I had to choose one it would be the thunderbeast. The cyclone is a great can and relatively inexpensive. To my ear it has the best tone of the three but the thunderbeast is not far behind (a bit sharper but just as quiet).
I have used all three on .243, 6.5CM, .308 with supers and .300BO subs. Can't tell much difference between the beast and cyclone but the SDN-6 is def louder.

My 2c
