This is Your Brain....

The thread on Hydro Shock in the Firearms Forum got me to thinking about how my 55 gr. V-Max perform on hogs.

This one was shot at 125 yards in the neck.

And this your brain on V-Max!

Hog on the left was shot in the ear at 125 yards.

Hog on the right was shot right between the eyes at 140 yards. He was facing me dead on.

If you guys want to keep the skull for bleaching, then a neck shot is more friendly to maintaining an intact skull...

I just gathered the ones with the top half missing for interest, as you can clearly see the damage a V-Max does.

As a side note: I had shot a mature sow awhile back that had 3 piglets with it. They hung around, and I would see them now and then. The other day while out, Buster and I came across them in a thicket. I let him give chase because they were not really too big for him to handle...

Sure enough, he had the small boar bayed in short order. I had my Ruger .22, and got a clear shot as they jousted in the thicket...

Shot that one in the ear too. Buster had already drawn a bit of blood though, chasing and baying it.

What do you find with them on broadside shots?

In my 556 I use the 77 grain Sierra Match Kings. Bang Flop so far with broadside shots.

I have limited experience with pigs and shooting them and for me I wanted the extra weight (77 grain) in the 556. I also opted for 1:7 twist barrels for the 556 to stabilize that bullet.

If I'm running the 55 gr. VMax in it and they offer a good broadside, I shoot them in the ear.

If I have a sturdier bullet, or even a 55 gr SP, I have no problem shooting them very slightly behind the shoulder. (A hogs vitals are more forward than a deer or coyote.) But if making a vitals shot, I prefer the 64 gr SP over the 55 gr.
