At what age can baby pigs survive?

old folks

I have shot sows with babys. in a way i hate to do that but the land owners wont them all dead. just wonder at what age they can make it on there own.

two weeks if they are on their own and have a food source. Younger if they are able to keep up with the family group. I tested this theory last year.We found a family group of 5 sows and 18 piglets we killed all but 2 of the sows and were able to keep up with the remainder. At 1 month of age we killed the remaining sows. the piglets stayed and survived during drought conditions. By the time the pigs weighed 50-60 pounds there were only 15 left. we're not sure where the 3 went. At this point we started killing them and lost track of the last 4-5 of them. Not sure if they left or joined another group of hogs.

Good information, Guess. Had heard that wet sows would nurse orphaned pigs, but was not sure.

We shot one of a group of hogs which scattered at the shot last summer. There were several young pigs that had no problem keeping up with the group, but one(about 6" tall) got confused and was separated from the group. We don't know if it was re-united w/the group or not.

How big (tall) is a 2 week old pig?

Thanks Guess. I was hoping you or Yellohamer would give advise on this. I dont target just sows. I shoot hogs and then ground check them.

Agree w/ guess. If you see them out and about, they're already old enough to survive on their own.

The only ones I hate to shoot are the ones I miss.

ZERO REMORSE for ever shooting a hog, under any circumstance! Same difference as stepping on a cockroach. You can stomp on all of them you want, you won't ever get them all.

Guess pretty much said it all but ill give an example.
We don't have very many feral hogs down here but I have a little farm with 23 pigs and one time my sow had a litter then died I thought the piglets would die too. But I just gave them some raw cow milk and a warm stall and they lived! Then 3 of the piglets got out and in the woods we looked forever and didn't find them. Then a year later I'm in the back deer hunting and two sows with litters and a boar came through! They were the first original 3 because they had markings in their ears!! So all in all we had some tasty pork chops that night!!
