My buddy and I went out hog hunting last night on State Land where we have a contract with the State for hog removal. Parked our trucks and suited up with camo overalls, Night Vision helmets, PS-32 and LS-64, etc. I was carrying my SIG 716 7.62mm with Flir Thermal and DBAL-D2 and my friend had his Ruger Mini-30 7.62 Russian with a BeamShot IR laser.
No sooner do we walk about a quarter of a mile down to the nearest trap and feeder we have set up when suddenly IR lights are all over us and the Game Wardens are on us wearing PVS-7 goggles!
We just stood still, as we were both heavily armed, and the officers came up to us out of the woods. Good thing that we know the Game Wardens, as they immediately recognized our voices when we told them who we were and that were are not moving and standing still as they came up to us!
We had not been to this particular trap and feeder in about 6 weeks, which was why we were going there to check it out. But previously we had captured some poachers and their dogs on the IR camera at night on State Property and turned the videos over to Law Enforcement, which is why they had the place staked out. It was quite a surprise for us, but worked out good as we helped them for the next two hours hunting down the poachers.
They asked us if we had any handguns and we said no, just our rifles and night vision equipment. So they led the way with guns drawn towards the direction of some cur dogs barking. We got up close to the dogs but never did see the dogs or the poachers.
Pretty exciting to say the least, to be out using our NV and Thermal gear to hunt humans backing up law enforcement!
They sure did like the FLIR LS-64 thermal and DBAL-D2 IR laser and Illuminator, which they had never seen before, and our EagleTac 3400mW IR flashlights really impressed them allot and they want to get some like ours.
They left after about two hours and we hung around later but only saw a bunch of deer and then we left when a big thunderstorm broke out and we got totally soaked.
It sure does pay to know your game wardens and be totally legal when you are out night hunting!!!
