Razor Rehab........

This is one of the razors Tnshootist (John) gave me. It is a Montgomery Ward's brand, made by Henckels.

The scales were a plain black and were in mediocre condition. I figured I would use it to try to make my own razor scales since I already had a couple others with black plastic handles.

I went with Red Oak. Not sure why........

That's a good looking piece and the fit looks great. The red oak has a nice grain to it and it fits the style well. Do you put a finish on your scales?

That had red oak stain, then satin spray poly. Let dry, then sand it back off. Then either rehit with poly, or Minwax paste wax. The finish on it is like glass. No blemishes, streaks, or clouding. And very tough.

Sounds like a PITA, I know, but it puts a great finish on stuff. Rubs the poly into the wood. Great for stuff that gets wet. Great for getting an "antiqued" look also if you just kinda take it off randomly, leaving more in some places, less in others.

Whats it like shaving with one of those? I went and priced new blades of my fancy little gillete disposables one and about died at the price!! $30 for a refill pack! Good straight razor is expensive but in the long run theyll pay themselves off wont they?
