shooting sticks pros/cons?

Thinking about making a set of shooting sticks, how do you like em? Are they good for in the field? Any pros or cons I should be aware of while using em? Lets have some opinions please.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

You should certainily try them out and see the difference for yourself, they do improve your shooting. I use Stoney Point shooting stix and have been very pleased with them, although any sticks will work. I will have my rifle propped up on the sticks when I begin calling and most of the time I have time to adjust the stix and rifle in the direction the coyote is coming in from. They give you a solid shooting platform, especially when you are sitting on your butt. Check em out!

I don't go out without them. I have used the Harris bipod, Kramer snipe stix, Stoney Point steady stix and I always come back to good old homemade shooting stix. The above bipods and sticks are good products but have limitations. I like to be able to lift my gun and swing it and have the shooting sticks drop out of the way if needed. I now make my own out of aluminum rod and they feel sturdier than the Stoney Point sticks to me because there isn't a rubber yoke holding the two sticks together and the aluminum is stiffer that the tent pole material. They don't fold up like Stoney Points but that hasn't bothered me to carry them. I have shot a lot of coyotes off mine and it almost feels like a bench rest. My vote goes to shooting sticks over any bipod. I am making mine now to sell. Send me an e mail if you would like to try them out.

Thanks for the input, I'm going to make a set and give em a shot. Hopefully I get to test em on a coyote fairly soon /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif , if not I can at least check my scope at different ranges and see the difference between sticks and no sticks.

I make my own as well out of carbon arrows. they are super stiff and allow good solid shooting platform, and they weigh next to nothing lighter than aluminum. I have directions on how to make them on my home page link below take a look they are so cheap to make you cant afford not to try them! Here is a pic of one of my buddies using them.

Okbow, thanks for the idea. I had a couple messed up carbon arrows so i cut the fletch off of them tonight and made some sticks. I glued a couple of 125 points into the insert on one end, and glued some nocks into the other just to keep the ends closed up. Instead of using castration bands (don't have any), i used some of my girlfriends hair ties. They are elastic and covered in black thread. They should work well. I am trying them out this week.

Oxbow,
Those shooting sticks are definately the thing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Matter of fact several people make em,Herbs Howlers and the guy that makes the kind Ed Wimberly uses in Op Predator video. All variations of the kind the coyote hunters used in the ancient 60's. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Terry, the name escapes me but his name and order info is here in the archives somewhere.Ill look for it and post it for ya.I know they were like 25 bucks or something like that pricewise.

I have used the Harris with success, But after the PM hunt, Robb from Scottsdale has made a believer out of me concerning shooting sticks. Robb also has a good design for them. I will leave it to him if he wants to tell you how he makes them, but it is a great setup.

They are just too versatile..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif -MP

Lone Howl,

Thanks for your effort. I appreciate it. Seems to me his name and number were posted before and I lost track of it.

My hunting partner was really liking those sticks Ed W. used. Maybe if I get him a set, he'll be able to hit something....!

Thanks again,

Terry
